forty days:
This represented the forty years during which gross idolatry prevailed in Judah, from the reformation of Josiah, bc 624, to the same final desolation of the land. Some think that the period of 390 days also predicts the duration of the siege of the Babylonians ("Takeª ° thou¹ also unto thee wheat,ª and barley,ª and beans,ª and lentiles,ª and millet,ª and fitches,ª and putª ° them in oneª vessel,ª and makeª ° thee breadª thereof, [according] to the numberª of the daysª that¹ thou¹ shalt lieª ° upon¹ thy side,ª threeª hundredª and ninetyª daysª shalt thou eatª ° thereof." {Ezk 4:9}), deducting from it five months and twenty-nine days, when the besiegers went to meet the Egyptians ("And it came to pass¹ in the ninthª yearª of his reign,ª ° in the tenthª month,ª in the tenthª [day] of the month,ª [that] Nebuchadnezzarª kingª of Babylonª came,ª ° he,¹ and all¹ his host,ª against¹ Jerusalem,ª and pitchedª ° against¹ it; and they builtª ° fortsª against¹ it round about.ª ...
