"And Jonathanª stripped² ° himself¹ of¹ the robeª that¹ [was] upon¹ him, and gaveª ° it to David,ª and his garments,ª even to¹ his sword,ª and to¹ his bow,ª and to¹ his girdle.² ¹" {1Sm 18:4} + "And I will clotheª ° him with thy robe,ª and strengthenª ° him with thy girdle,ª and I will commitª ° thy governmentª into his hand:ª and he shall be¹ a fatherª to the inhabitantsª ° of Jerusalem,ª and to the houseª of Judah.ª" {Isa 22:21}

That is, "princes in appearance;" which seem to have been the deified men worshipped by the Chaldeans. The inhabitants of Judah, like the Israelites, connected themselves with the Assyrians, and were enamoured with their idols; and then with the Chaldeans, and followed their idols; still retaining their attachment to the Egyptians and their idolatrous rites.
