Children:
The word yeladim rendered children, is frequently used for lads, or young men (see "And the childª grew,ª° and was weaned:ª° and Abrahamª madeª° a greatª feastª the [same] dayª that¹ Isaacª was weaned.ª°" {Gen 21:8} + "And Abrahamª rose up earlyª° in the morning,ª and tookª° bread,ª and a bottleª of water,ª and gaveª° [it] unto¹ Hagar,ª puttingª° [it] on¹ her shoulder,ª and the child,ª and sent her away:ª° and she departed,²°¹ and wanderedª° in the wildernessª of Beersheba.ª ... And she went,²°¹ and sat her downª° over againstª¹ [him] a good way off,ª° as it were a bowshot:ªª° for¹ she said,ª° Let me not¹ seeª° the deathª of the child.ª And she satª° over against¹¹ [him], and lift upª°¹ her voice,ª and wept.ª°" {Gen 21:14-16}), νεανισκους, as the LXX render; and Daniel must have been at this time at least seventeen or eighteen years of age.
in whom:
"For¹ whatsoever¹ manª [he be] that¹ hath a blemish,ª he shall not¹ approach:ª° a blindª man,ª or¹ a lame,ª or¹ he that hath a flat nose,ª° or¹ any thing superfluous,ª° ... No¹¹ manª that¹ hath a blemishª of the seedª¹ of Aaronª the priestª shall come nighª° to offerª°¹ the offerings²° of the LORD² made by fire:ª¹ he hath a blemish;ª he shall not¹ come nighª° to offerª°¹ the breadª of his God.ª" {Lev 21:18-21} + "And if¹ a manª causeª° a blemishª in his neighbour;ª as¹ he hath done,ª° so¹ shall it be doneª° to him; ... Breachª for¹ breach,ª eyeª for¹ eye,ª toothª for¹ tooth:ª as¹ he hath causedª° a blemishª in a man,ª so¹ shall it be doneª° to him [again]." {Lev 24:19-20} + "Then saidª° he unto¹ Zebahª and Zalmunna,ª What² manner¹ of men²¹ [were they] whom¹ ye slewª° at Tabor?ª And they answered,ª° As thouª [art], so [were] they; each oneª resembledª the childrenª of a king.ª" {Jdg 8:18} + "But in all¹ Israelª there was¹ noneª¹ to be so muchª praisedª° as Absalomª for his beauty:ª from the soleª¹ of his footª even to¹ the crown of his headª there was¹ no¹ blemishª in him." {2Sm 14:25} + "Inª whichª timeª Mosesª was born,ª° andª wasª° exceeding² fair,ª and²¹ nourished upª°¹ inª his²¹ father'sª houseª threeª months:ª" {Act 7:20} + "Thatª he might presentª° itª to himselfª a gloriousª church,ª notª havingª° spot,²¹ orª wrinkle,ª orª anyª such thing;ª butª thatª it should beª° holyª andª without blemish.ª" {Eph 5:27}
and skillful:
Rather, as Houbigant renders, "apt to understand wisdom, to acquire knowledge, and to attain science;" for it was not a knowledge of the sciences, but merely a capacity to learn them, that was required. "Danielª answeredª° and said,ª° Blessedª° beª° the nameª of¹ Godª for² ever² and ever:ªª¹ for¹ wisdomª and mightª are² his: ... And he¹ changethª° the timesª and the seasons:ª he removethª° kings,ª and setteth upª° kings:ª he givethª° wisdomª unto the wise,ª and knowledgeª to them that knowª° understanding:ª" {Dan 2:20-21} + "There isª a manª in thy kingdom,ª in whom¹ [is] the spiritª of the holyª gods;ª and in the daysª of thy fatherª lightª and understandingª and wisdom,ª like the wisdomª of the gods,ª was foundª° in him; whom the kingª Nebuchadnezzarª thy father,ª the king,ª [I say], thy father,ª madeª° masterª of the magicians,ª astrologers,ª Chaldeans,ª [and] soothsayers;ª°" {Dan 5:11} + "Wisdomª strengthenethª° the wiseª more than tenª¹ mightyª [men] which¹ are¹ in the city.ª" {Ecc 7:19} + "Andª Mosesª was learnedª° in allª the wisdomª of the Egyptians,ª andª wasª° mightyª inª wordsª andª inª deeds.ª" {Act 7:22}
ability:
"As for these¹ fourª children,ª Godª gaveª° them knowledgeª and skillª° in all¹ learningª and wisdom:ª and Danielª had understandingª° in all¹ visionsª and dreams.ª ... And in all¹ mattersª of wisdomª [and] understanding,ª that¹ the kingª enquiredª° of¹ them, he foundª° them ten¹ times²¹ better² than¹ all¹ the magiciansª [and] astrologersª that¹ [were] in all¹ his realm.ª" {Dan 1:17-20} + "Seestª° thou a manª diligentª in his business?ª he shall standª° beforeª kings;ª he shall not¹ standª° beforeª meanª [men]." {Prv 22:29}
