 1:1 ¶ The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

 1:1 ¶ The proverbsº of Solomonº the sonº of David,º kingº of Israel;º

 1:2 To know wisdom and instruction; To discern the words of understanding;

 1:2 To knowºº wisdomº and instruction;º to perceiveºº the wordsº of understanding;º

 1:3 To receive instruction in wise dealing, In righteousness and justice and equity;

 1:3 To receiveºº the instructionº of wisdom,ºº justice,º and judgment,º and equity;º

 1:4 To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion:

 1:4 To giveºº subtiltyº to the simple,º to the young manº knowledgeº and discretion.º

 1:5 That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; And that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels:

 1:5 A wiseº [man] will hear,ºº and will increaseºº learning;º and a man of understandingºº shall attainºº unto wise counsels:º

 1:6 To understand a proverb, and a figure, The words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

 1:6 To understandºº a proverb,º and the interpretation;º the wordsº of the wise,º and their dark sayings.º

 1:7 ¶ The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; [But] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

 1:7 ¶ The fearº of the LORDº [is] the beginningº of knowledge:º [but] foolsº despiseºº wisdomº and instruction.º

 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:

 1:8 My son,º hearºº the instructionº of thy father,º and forsakeºº notº the lawº of thy mother:º

 1:9 For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck.

 1:9 Forº theyº [shall be] an ornamentº of graceº unto thy head,º and chainsº about thy neck.º

 1:10 ¶ My son, if sinners entice thee, Consent thou not.

 1:10 ¶ My son,º ifº sinnersº enticeºº thee, consentºº thou not.º

 1:11 If they say, Come with us, Let us lay wait for blood; Let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause;

 1:11 Ifº they say,ºº Comeººº withº us, let us lay waitºº for blood,º let us lurkºº privilyº for the innocentº without cause:º

 1:12 Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, And whole, as those that go down into the pit;

 1:12 Let us swallow them upºº aliveº as the grave;º and whole,º as those that go downºº into the pit:º

 1:13 We shall find all precious substance; We shall fill our houses with spoil;

 1:13 We shall findºº allº preciousº substance,º we shall fillºº our housesº with spoil:º

 1:14 Thou shalt cast thy lot among us; We will all have one purse:

 1:14 Castºº inº thy lotº amongº us; let us allº haveº oneº purse:º

 1:15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; Refrain thy foot from their path:

 1:15 My son,º walkººº notº thou in the wayº withº them; refrainºº thy footº from their path:ºº

 1:16 For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood.

 1:16 Forº their feetº runºº to evil,º and make hasteºº to shedºº blood.º

 1:17 For in vain is the net spread In the sight of any bird:

 1:17 Surelyº in vainº the netº is spreadºº in the sightº of anyº bird.ºº

 1:18 And these lay wait for their own blood; They lurk privily for their own lives.

 1:18 And theyº lay waitºº for their [own] blood;º they lurk privilyºº for their [own] lives.º

 1:19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; It taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

 1:19 Soº [are] the waysº of every oneº that is greedyºº of gain;º [which] taketh awayººº the lifeº of the ownersº thereof.

 1:20 ¶ Wisdom crieth aloud in the street; She uttereth her voice in the broad places;

 1:20 ¶ Wisdomº criethºº without;º she utterethºº her voiceº in the streets:º

 1:21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse; At the entrance of the gates, In the city, she uttereth her words:

 1:21 She criethºº in the chiefº placeº of concourse,ºº in the openingsº of the gates:º in the cityº she utterethºº her words,º [saying],

 1:22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And scoffers delight them in scoffing, And fools hate knowledge?

 1:22 How long,ºº ye simple ones,º will ye loveºº simplicity?º and the scornersºº delightºº in their scorning,º and foolsº hateºº knowledge?º

 1:23 Turn you at my reproof: Behold, I will pour out my spirit upon you; I will make known my words unto you.

 1:23 Turnºº you at my reproof:º behold,º I will pour outºº my spiritº unto you, I will make knownºº my wordsº unto you.

 1:24 ¶ Because I have called, and ye have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man hath regarded;

 1:24 ¶ Becauseº I have called,ºº and ye refused;ºº I have stretched outºº my hand,º and no manº regarded;ºº

 1:25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, And would none of my reproof:

 1:25 But ye have set at noughtºº allº my counsel,º and wouldºº noneº of my reproof:º

 1:26 I also will laugh in [the day of] your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

 1:26 Iº alsoº will laughºº at your calamity;º I will mockºº when your fearº cometh;ºº

 1:27 When your fear cometh as a storm, And your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; When distress and anguish come upon you.

 1:27 When your fearº comethºº as desolation,ººº and your destructionº comethºº as a whirlwind;º when distressº and anguishº comethºº uponº you.

 1:28 Then will they call upon me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they shall not find me:

 1:28 Thenº shall they callºº uponº me, but I will notº answer;ºº they shall seek me early,ºº but they shall notº findºº me:

 1:29 For that they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of Jehovah:

 1:29 For thatºº they hatedºº knowledge,º and did notº chooseºº the fearº of the LORD:º

 1:30 They would none of my counsel; They despised all my reproof.

 1:30 They wouldºº noneº of my counsel:º they despisedºº allº my reproof.º

 1:31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own devices.

 1:31 Therefore shall they eatºº of the fruitºº of their own way,º and be filledºº with their own devices.ºº

 1:32 For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, And the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

 1:32 Forº the turning awayº of the simpleº shall slayºº them, and the prosperityº of foolsº shall destroyºº them.

 1:33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, And shall be quiet without fear of evil.

 1:33 But whoso hearkenethºº unto me shall dwellºº safely,º and shall be quietºº from fearºº of evil.º
