 1:1 ¶ The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now it came to pass in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,

 1:1 ¶ The wordsº of Nehemiahº the sonº of Hachaliah.º And it came to passº in the monthº Chisleu,º in the twentiethº year,º as Iº wasº in Shushanº the palace,º

 1:2 that Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men out of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, that were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

 1:2 That Hanani,º oneº of my brethren,ºº came,ºº heº and [certain] menºº of Judah;ºº and I askedºº them concerningº the Jewsº that had escaped,º whichº were leftºº ofº the captivity,º and concerningº Jerusalem.º

 1:3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

 1:3 And they saidºº unto me, The remnantºº thatº are leftºº ofº the captivityº thereº in the provinceº [are] in greatº afflictionº and reproach:º the wallº of Jerusalemº also [is] broken down,ºº and the gatesº thereof are burnedºº with fire.º

 1:4 ¶ And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven,

 1:4 ¶ And it came to pass,º when I heardººº theseº words,º that I sat downºº and wept,ºº and mournedºº [certain] days,º and fasted,ººº and prayedºº beforeº the Godº of heaven,º

 1:5 and said, I beseech thee, O Jehovah, the God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and lovingkindness with them that love him and keep his commandments:

 1:5 And said,ºº I beseechº thee, O LORDº Godº of heaven,º the greatº and terribleºº God,º that keepethºº covenantº and mercyº for them that loveºº him and observeºº his commandments:º

 1:6 Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hearken unto the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee at this time, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants while I confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee. Yea, I and my father's house have sinned:

 1:6 Let thine earº nowº beº attentive,º and thine eyesº open,ºº that thou mayest hearººº the prayerº of thy servant,º whichº Iº prayºº beforeº thee now,º dayº and night,º forº the childrenº of Israelº thy servants,º and confessººº the sinsº of the childrenº of Israel,º whichº we have sinnedºº against thee: both Iº and my father'sº houseº have sinned.ºº

 1:7 we have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.

 1:7 We have dealt veryºº corruptlyºº against thee, and have notº keptººº the commandments,º nor the statutes,º nor the judgments,º whichº thou commandedstººº thy servantº Moses.º

 1:8 Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye trespass, I will scatter you abroad among the peoples:

 1:8 Remember,ºº I beseechº thee,º the wordº thatº thou commandedstººº thy servantº Moses,º saying,ºº [If] yeº transgress,ºº Iº will scatter you abroadººº among the nations:º

 1:9 but if ye return unto me, and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts were in the uttermost part of the heavens, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there.

 1:9 But [if] ye turnºº untoº me, and keepºº my commandments,º and doºº them; thoughº there wereº of you cast outºº unto the uttermost partº of the heaven,º [yet] will I gatherºº them from thence,ºº and will bringºº them untoº the placeº thatº I have chosenºº to setººº my nameº there.º

 1:10 Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.

 1:10 Now theseº [are] thy servantsº and thy people,º whomº thou hast redeemedºº by thy greatº power,º and by thy strongº hand.º

 1:11 O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who delight to fear thy name; and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. Now I was cupbearer to the king.

 1:11 O Lord,º I beseechº thee, let nowº thine earº beº attentiveº toº the prayerº of thy servant,º and toº the prayerº of thy servants,º who desireº to fearººº thy name:º and prosper,ºº I prayº thee, thy servantº this day,º and grantºº him mercyº in the sightº of thisº man.º For Iº wasº the king'sº cupbearer.ººº
