 22:1 ¶ And David departed thence, and escaped; and he comes to the cave of Adullam{gr.Odollam}, and his brethren hear, and the house of his father, and they go down to him there.

 22:1 ¶ Davidº therefore departedººº thence,ºº and escapedºº toº the caveº Adullam:º and when his brethrenº and allº his father'sº houseº heardºº [it], they went downºº thitherº toº him.

 22:2 And there gathered to him every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was troubled in mind; and he was a leader over them, and there were with him about four hundred men.

 22:2 And everyº oneº [that was] in distress,º and everyº oneº thatº [was] in debt,ºº and everyº oneº [that was] discontented,ºº gatheredºº themselvesº untoº him; and he becameº a captainº overº them: and there wereº withº him about fourº hundredº men.º

 22:3 ¶ And David departed thence to Mizpeh{gr.Massephath} of Moab, and said to the king of Moab, Let, I pray thee, my father and my mother be with thee, until I know what God will do to me.

 22:3 ¶ And Davidº wentººº thenceºº to Mizpehº of Moab:º and he saidºº untoº the kingº of Moab,º Let my fatherº and my mother,º I pray thee,º come forth,ºº [and be] withº you, tillºº I knowºº whatº Elohimº will doºº for me.

 22:4 And he persuaded the King of Moab, and they dwell with him continually, while David was in the hold.

 22:4 And he broughtºº themº beforeº the kingº of Moab:º and they dweltºº withº him allº the whileº that Davidº wasº in the hold.º

 22:5 ¶ And Gad the prophet said to David, Dwell not in the hold: go, and thou shalt enter the land of Judah{gr.Juda}. So David went, and came and dwelt in the city of Saric.

 22:5 ¶ And the prophetº Gadº saidºº untoº David,º Abideºº notº in the hold;º depart,ººº and getºº thee into the landº of Judah.º Then Davidº departed,ººº and cameºº into the forestº of Hareth.º

 22:6 ¶ And Saul heard that David was discovered, and his men with him: now Saul dwelt in the hill below the field that is in Ramah{gr.Rama}, and his spear [was] in his hand, and all his servants stood near him.

 22:6 ¶ When Saulº heardºº thatº Davidº was discovered,ºº and the menºº thatº [were] withº him, (now Saulº abodeºº in Gibeahº underº a treeº in Ramah,º having his spearº in his hand,º and allº his servantsº [were] standingºº aboutº him;)

 22:7 And Saul said to his servants that stood by him, Hear now, ye sons of Benjamin, will the son of Jesse{gr.Jessae} indeed give all of you fields and vineyards, and will he make you all captains of hundreds and captains of thousands?

 22:7 Then Saulº saidºº unto his servantsº that stoodºº aboutº him, Hearº now,ººº ye Benjamites;º will the sonº of Jesseº giveºº every oneº of you fieldsº and vineyards,º [and] makeºº you allº captainsº of thousands,º and captainsº of hundreds;º

 22:8 That ye are conspiring against me, and there is no one that informs me, whereas my son has made a covenant with the son of Jesse{gr.Jessae}, and there is no one of you that is sorry for me, or informs me, that my son has stirred up my servant against me for an enemy, as [it is] this day?

 22:8 Thatº allº of you have conspiredºº againstº me, and [there is] noneº that shewethºººº me that my sonº hath made a leagueºº withº the sonº of Jesse,º and [there is] noneº ofº you that is sorryºº forº me, or shewethººº untoººº me thatº my sonº hath stirred upººº my servantº againstº me, to lie in wait,ºº as at thisº day?º

 22:9 ¶ And Doec the Syrian who was over the mules of Saul answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse{gr.Jessae} as he came to Nomba to Abimelech son of Ahitub{gr.Achitob} the priest.

 22:9 ¶ Then answeredºº Doegº the Edomite,º whichº was setºº overº the servantsº of Saul,º and said,ºº I sawººº the sonº of Jesseº comingºº to Nob,º toº Ahimelechº the sonº of Ahitub.º

 22:10 And [the priest] enquired of God for him, and gave him provision, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.

 22:10 And he enquiredºº of Yahwehº for him, and gaveºº him victuals,º and gaveºº him the swordº of Goliathº the Philistine.º

 22:11 And the king sent to call Abimelech son of Ahitub{gr.Achitob} and all his father's sons, the priests that were in Nomba; and they all came to the king.

 22:11 Then the kingº sentºº to callººº Ahimelechº the priest,º the sonº of Ahitub,º and allº his father'sº house,º the priestsº thatº [were] in Nob:º and they cameºº allº of them toº the king.º

 22:12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub{gr.Achitob}. And he said, Lo! I [am here], speak, [my] lord.

 22:12 And Saulº said,ºº Hearºº now,º thou sonº of Ahitub.º And he answered,ºº Hereº I [am], my adon.º

 22:13 And Saul said to him, Why have thou and the son of Jesse{gr.Jessae} conspired against me, that thou shouldest give him bread and a sword, and shouldest enquire of God for him, to raise him up against me as an enemy, as [he is] this day?

 22:13 And Saulº saidºº untoº him, Whyº have ye conspiredºº againstº me, thouº and the sonº of Jesse,º in that thou hast givenºº him bread,º and a sword,º and hast enquiredºº of Elohimº for him, that he should riseºº againstº me, to lie in wait,ºº as at thisº day?º

 22:14 And he answered the king, and said, And who [is] there among all thy servants faithful as David, and [he is] a son-in-law of the king, and [he is] executor of all thy commands, and [is] honourable in thy house?

 22:14 Then Ahimelechº answeredººº the king,º and said,ºº And whoº [is so] faithfulºº among allº thy servantsº as David,º which is the king'sº son in law,º and goethºº atº thy bidding,º and is honourableºº in thine house?º

 22:15 Have I begun to-day to enquire of God for him? By no means: let not the king bring a charge against his servant, and against thee whole of my father's house; for thy servant knew not in all these matters anything great or small.

 22:15 Did I thenº beginºº to enquireºº of Elohimº for him? be it farº from me:º let notº the kingº imputeºº [any] thingº unto his servant,º [nor] to allº the houseº of my father:º forº thy servantº knewºº nothingºº of allº this,º lessº orº more.º

 22:16 And king Saul said, Thou shalt surely die, Abimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.

 22:16 And the kingº said,ºº Thou shalt surelyºº die,ºº Ahimelech,º thou,º and allº thy father'sº house.º

 22:17 ¶ And the king said to the footmen that attended on him, Draw nigh and slay the priests of the Lord, because their hand [is] with David, and because they knew that he fled, and they did not inform me. But the servants of the king would not lift their hands to fall upon the priest of the Lord.

 22:17 ¶ And the kingº saidºº unto the footmenºº that stoodºº aboutº him, Turn,ºº and slayºº the priestsº of Yahweh;º becauseº their handº alsoº [is] withº David,º and becauseº they knewºº whenº heº fled,ºº and did notº shewºººº it to me.º But the servantsº of the kingº wouldºº notº put forthººº their handº to fallºº upon the priestsº of Yahweh.º

 22:18 And the king said to Doec, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests: and Doec the Syrian turned, and slew the priests of the Lord in that day, three hundred and five men, all wearing an ephod.

 22:18 And the kingº saidºº to Doeg,º Turnºº thou,º and fallºº upon the priests.º And Doegº the Edomiteº turned,ºº and heº fellºº upon the priests,º and slewºº on thatº dayº fourscoreº and fiveº personsº that did wearºº a linenº ephod.º

 22:19 And he smote Nomba the city of the priest with the edge of the sword, both man, and woman, infant and suckling, and calf, and ox, and sheep.

 22:19 And Nob,º the cityº of the priests,º smoteºº he with the edgeº of the sword,º both menºº and women,º childrenºº and sucklings,ºº and oxen,º and asses,º and sheep,º with the edgeº of the sword.º

 22:20 ¶ And one son of Abimelech son of Ahitub{gr.Achitob} escapes, and his name [was] Abiathar, and he fled after David.

 22:20 ¶ And oneº of the sonsº of Ahimelechº the sonº of Ahitub,º namedº Abiathar,º escaped,ºº and fledºº afterº David.º

 22:21 And Abiathar told David that Saul had slain all the priests of the Lord.

 22:21 And Abiatharº shewedºº Davidº thatº Saulº had slainººº Yahweh'sº priests.º

 22:22 And David said to Abiathar, I knew it in that day, that Doec the Syrian would surely tell Saul: I am guilty of the death of the house of thy father.

 22:22 And Davidº saidºº unto Abiathar,º I knewºº [it] thatº day,º whenº Doegº the Edomiteº [was] there,º thatº he would surelyºº tellºº Saul:º Iº have occasionedºº [the death] of allº the personsº of thy father'sº house.º

 22:23 Dwell with me; fear not, for wherever I shall seek a place [of safety] for my life, I will also seek a place for thy life, for thou art safely guarded [while] with me.

 22:23 Abideºº thou withº me, fearºº not:º forº he thatº seekethººº my lifeº seekethººº thy life:º butº withº me thouº [shalt be] in safeguard.º
