 1:1 ¶
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim{gr.Joakim} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, came Nebuchadnezzar{gr.Nabuchodonosor} king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it. |
|
 1:1 ¶
In the thirdº
yearº
of the reignº
of Jehoiakimº
kingº
of Judahº
cameºº
Nebuchadnezzarº
kingº
of Babylonº
unto Jerusalem,º
and besiegedººº
it. |
 1:2
And the Lord gave into his hand Jehoiakim{gr.Joakim} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, and part of the vessels of the house of God: and he brought them into the land of Sennaar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god. |
 1:2
And Yahwehº
gaveººº
Jehoiakimº
kingº
of Judahº
into his hand,º
with partºº
of the vesselsº
of the houseº
of Elohim:º
which he carriedºº
intoº
the landº
of Shinarº
to the houseº
of his elohim;º
and he broughtºº
the vesselsº
into the treasureº
houseº
of his elohim.º |
 1:3 ¶
And the king told Asphanez his chief eunuch, to bring in [some] of the captive children of Israel, and of the seed of the kingdom, and of the princes; |
 1:3 ¶
And the kingº
spakeºº
unto Ashpenazº
the masterº
of his eunuchs,º
that he should bringºº
[certain] of the childrenºº
of Israel,º
and of the king'sº
seed,ººº
and ofº
the princes;º |
 1:4
young men in whom was no blemish, and beautiful in appearance, and skilled in all wisdom, and possessing knowledge, and acquainted with prudence, and who had ability to stand in the house before the king, and [the king gave commandment] to teach them the learning and language of the Chaldeans. |
 1:4
Childrenº
in whomº
[was] noºº
blemish,ºº
but wellº
favoured,ºº
and skilfulºº
in allº
wisdom,º
and cunningºº
in knowledge,º
and understandingºº
science,º
and suchº
as [had] abilityº
in them to standºº
in the king'sº
palace,º
and whom they might teachºº
the learningº
and the tongueº
of the Chaldeans.º |
 1:5
And the king appointed them a daily portion from the king's table, and from the wine which he drank; and [gave orders] to nourish them three years, and [that] afterwards they should stand before the king. |
 1:5
And the kingº
appointedºº
them a dailyº
provisionº
of the king'sº
meat,ººº
and of the wineºº
which he drank:º
so nourishingºº
them threeº
years,º
that at the endºº
thereof they might standºº
beforeº
the king.º |
 1:6
Now these were among them of the children of Judah{gr.Juda}, Daniel, and Hananiah{gr.Ananias}, and Azariah{gr.Azarias}, and Mishael{gr.Misael}. |
 1:6
Now among these wereº
of the childrenºº
of Judah,º
Daniel,º
Hananiah,º
Mishael,º
and Azariah:º |
 1:7
And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: to Daniel, Belteshazzar{gr.Baltasar}; and to Hananiah{gr.Ananias}, Shadrach{gr.Sedrach}; and to Mishael{gr.Misael}, Meshach{gr.Misach}; and to Azariah{gr.Azarias}, Abednego{gr.Abdenago}. |
 1:7
Unto whom the princeº
of the eunuchsº
gaveºº
names:º
for he gaveºº
unto Danielº
[the name] of Belteshazzar;º
and to Hananiah,º
of Shadrach;º
and to Mishael,º
of Meshach;º
and to Azariah,º
of Abednego.º |
 1:8 ¶
And Daniel purposed in his heart, that he would not defile himself with the king's table, nor with the wine of his drink: and he intreated the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. |
 1:8 ¶
But Danielº
purposedºº
inº
his heartº
thatº
he would notº
defileºº
himselfº
with the portionºº
of the king'sº
meat,ºº
nor with the wineº
which he drank:º
therefore he requestedºº
of the princeºº
of the eunuchsº
thatº
he might notº
defileºº
himself.º |
 1:9
Now God [had] brought Daniel into favour and compassion with the chief of the eunuchs. |
 1:9
Now Elohimº
had broughtººº
Danielº
into favourº
and tender loveº
withº
the princeº
of the eunuchs.º |
 1:10
And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your meat and your drink, lest he see your countenances gloomy in comparison of the young men your equals; also shall ye endanger my head to the king. |
 1:10
And the princeº
of the eunuchsº
saidºº
unto Daniel,º
Iº
fearººº
my adonº
the king,º
whoº
hath appointedººº
your meatº
and your drink:º
forº
whyº
should he seeººº
your facesº
worse likingºº
thanº
the childrenº
whichº
[are] of your sort?º
then shall ye make [me] endangerººº
my headº
to the king.º |
 1:11
And Daniel said to Amelsad, whom the chief of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah{gr.Ananias}, Mishael{gr.Misael}, [and] Azariah{gr.Azarias}. |
 1:11
Then saidºº
Danielº
toº
Melzar,º
whomº
the princeº
of the eunuchsº
had setºº
overº
Daniel,º
Hananiah,º
Mishael,º
and Azariah,º |
 1:12
Prove now thy servants ten days; and let them give us pulse, and let us eat, and let us drink water: |
 1:12
Proveººº
thy servants,º
I beseech thee,º
tenº
days;º
and let them giveºº
us pulseº
to eat,ºº
and waterº
to drink.ºº |
 1:13
And let our countenances be seen by thee, and the countenances of the children that eat [at] the king's table; and deal with thy servants according as thou shalt see. |
 1:13
Then let our countenancesº
be looked uponºº
beforeº
thee, and the countenanceº
of the childrenº
that eatººº
of the portionºº
of the king'sº
meat:ºº
and asº
thou seest,ºº
dealºº
withº
thy servants.º |
 1:14
And he hearkened to them, and proved them ten days. |
 1:14
So he consentedºº
to them in thisº
matter,º
and provedºº
them tenº
days.º |
 1:15
And at the end of the ten days their countenances appeared fairer and stouter in flesh, than the children that fed at the king's table. |
 1:15
And at the endºº
of tenº
daysº
their countenancesº
appearedºº
fairerº
and fatterº
in fleshº
thanº
allº
the childrenº
which did eatººº
the portionºº
of the king'sº
meat.ºº |
 1:16
So Amelsad took away their supper and the wine of their drink, and gave them pulse. |
 1:16
Thus Melzarº
took awayººº
the portion of their meat,º
and the wineº
that they should drink;º
and gaveºº
them pulse.º |
 1:17 ¶
And [as for] these four children, God gave them understanding and prudence in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. |
 1:17 ¶
As for theseº
fourº
children,º
Elohimº
gaveºº
them knowledgeº
and skillºº
in allº
learningº
and wisdom:º
and Danielº
had understandingºº
in allº
visionsº
and dreams.º |
 1:18
And at the end of the days, [after] which the king had given orders to bring them in, then the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar{gr.Nabuchodonosor}. |
 1:18
Now at the endºº
of the daysº
thatº
the kingº
had saidºº
he should bringºº
them in,º
then the princeº
of the eunuchsº
broughtºº
them inº
beforeº
Nebuchadnezzar.º |
 1:19
And the king spoke with them; and there were not found out of them all any like Daniel, and Hananiah{gr.Ananias} and Mishael{gr.Misael}, and Azariah{gr.Azarias}: and they stood before the king. |
 1:19
And the kingº
communedºº
withº
them; and among them allºº
was foundºº
noneº
like Daniel,º
Hananiah,º
Mishael,º
and Azariah:º
therefore stoodºº
they beforeº
the king.º |
 1:20
And in every matter of wisdom and knowledge wherein the king questioned them, he found them ten times wiser than all the enchanters and sorcerers that were in all his kingdom. |
 1:20
And in allº
mattersº
of wisdomº
[and] understanding,º
thatº
the kingº
enquiredºº
ofº
them, he foundºº
them tenº
timesºº
betterº
thanº
allº
the magiciansº
[and] astrologersº
thatº
[were] in allº
his realm.º |
 1:21
And Daniel continued till the first year of king Cyrus. |
 1:21
And Danielº
continuedº
[even] untoº
the firstº
yearº
of kingº
Cyrus.º |
