 1:1 ¶ The word of the Lord which came to Joel the son of Bethuel{gr.Bathuel}.

 1:1 ¶ The wordº of Yahwehº thatº cameº toº Joelº the sonº of Pethuel.º

 1:2 Hear these [words], ye elders, and hearken all ye that inhabit the land. Have such things happen in your days, or in the days of your fathers?

 1:2 Hearºº this,º ye old men,º and give ear,ºº allº ye inhabitantsºº of the land.º Hath thisº beenº in your days,º or evenº in the daysº of your fathers?º

 1:3 Tell your children concerning them, and [let] your children [tell] their children, and their children another generation.

 1:3 Tellºº ye your childrenº ofº it, and [let] your childrenº [tell] their children,º and their childrenº anotherº generation.º

 1:4 The leavings of the caterpillar has the locust eaten, and the leavings of the locust has the palmerworm eaten, and the leavings of the palmerworm has the cankerworm eaten.

 1:4 That which the palmerwormº hath leftº hath the locustº eaten;ºº and that which the locustº hath leftº hath the cankerwormº eaten;ºº and that which the cankerwormº hath leftº hath the caterpillerº eaten.ºº

 1:5 Awake, ye drunkards, from your wine, and weep: mourn, all ye that drink wine to drunkenness: for joy and gladness and removed are from your mouth.

 1:5 Awake,ºº ye drunkards,º and weep;ºº and howl,ºº allº ye drinkersºº of wine,º because ofº the new wine;º forº it is cut offºº from your mouth.ºº

 1:6 For a strong and innumerable nation is come up against my land, their teeth are lion's teeth, and their back teeth those of a [lion's] whelp.

 1:6 Forº a nationº is come upºº uponº my land,º strong,º and withoutº number,º whose teethº [are] the teethº of a lion,º and he hath the cheek teethº of a great lion.º

 1:7 He has ruined my vine, and utterly broken my fig-trees: he has utterly searched [my vine], and cast it down; he has peeled its branches.

 1:7 He hath laidºº my vineº waste,º and barkedº my fig tree:º he hath made it cleanºº bare,ºº and cast [it] away;ºº the branchesº thereof are made white.ºº

 1:8 ¶ Lament to me more than a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

 1:8 ¶ Lamentºº like a virginº girdedºº with sackclothº forº the husbandº of her youth.º

 1:9 The meat-offering and drink-offering are removed from the house of the Lord: mourn, ye priests that serve at the altar of the Lord.

 1:9 The meat offeringº and the drink offeringº is cut offºº from the houseºº of Yahweh;º the priests,º Yahweh'sº ministers,ºº mourn.ºº

 1:10 For the plains languish: let the land mourn, for the corn languishes; the wine is dried up, the oil becomes scarce;

 1:10 The fieldº is wasted,ºº the landº mourneth;ºº forº the cornº is wasted:ºº the new wineº is dried up,ºº the oilº languisheth.ºº

 1:11 the husbandmen are consumed: mourn your property on account of the wheat and barley; for the harvest has perished from off the field.

 1:11 Be ye ashamed,ººº O ye husbandmen;º howl,ºº O ye vinedressers,º forº the wheatº and forº the barley;º becauseº the harvestº of the fieldº is perished.ºº

 1:12 The vine is dried up, and the fig-trees are become few; the pomegranate, and palm-tree, and apple, and all trees of the field are dried up: for the sons of men have have abolished joy.

 1:12 The vineº is dried up,ºº and the fig treeº languisheth;ºº the pomegranateº tree,º the palm treeº also,º and the apple tree,º [even] allº the treesº of the field,º are withered:ºº becauseº joyº is withered awayºº fromº the sonsº of men.º

 1:13 Gird yourselves [with sackcloth], and lament, ye priests: mourn, ye that serve at the altar: go in, sleep in sackcloths, ye that minister to God: for the meat-offering and drink-offering are withheld from the house of your God.

 1:13 Girdºº yourselves, and lament,ºº ye priests:º howl,ºº ye ministersºº of the altar:º come,ºº lie all nightºº in sackcloth,º ye ministersºº of my Elohim:º forº the meat offeringº and the drink offeringº is withholdenºº from the houseºº of your Elohim.º

 1:14 ¶ Sanctify a fast, proclaim a [solemn] service, gather the elders [and] all the inhabitants of the land into the house of your God, and cry earnestly to the Lord,

 1:14 ¶ Sanctifyºº ye a fast,º callºº a solemn assembly,º gatherºº the eldersº [and] allº the inhabitantsºº of the landº [into] the houseº of Yahwehº your Elohim,º and cryºº untoº Yahweh,º

 1:15 Alas, Alas, Alas for the day! for the day of the Lord is nigh, and it will come as trouble upon trouble.

 1:15 Alasº for the day!º forº the dayº of Yahwehº [is] at hand,º and as a destructionº from Shaddaiºº shall it come.ºº

 1:16 [Your] meat has been destroyed before your eyes, joy and gladness from out of the house of your God.

 1:16 Is notº the meatº cut offºº beforeº our eyes,º [yea], joyº and gladnessº from the houseºº of our Elohim?º

 1:17 The heifers have started at their mangers, the treasures are abolished, the wine-presses are broken down; for the corn is withered.

 1:17 The seedº is rottenºº underº their clods,º the garnersº are laid desolate,ºº the barnsº are broken down;ºº forº the cornº is withered.ºº

 1:18 What shall we store up for ourselves? the herds of cattle have mourned, because they had no pasture; and the flocks of sheep have been utterly destroyed.

 1:18 Howº do the beastsº groan!ºº the herdsº of cattleº are perplexed,ºº becauseº they have noº pasture;º yea,º the flocksº of sheepº are made desolate.ºº

 1:19 To thee, O Lord, will I cry: for fire has devoured the fair places of the wilderness, and a flame has burnt up all the trees of the field.

 1:19 O Yahweh,º toº thee will I cry:ºº forº the fireº hath devouredºº the pasturesº of the wilderness,º and the flameº hath burnedºº allº the treesº of the field.º

 1:20 And the cattle of the field have looked up to thee: for the fountains of waters have been dried up, and fire has devoured the fair places of the wilderness.

 1:20 The beastsº of the fieldº cryºº alsoº untoº thee: forº the riversº of watersº are dried up,ºº and the fireº hath devouredºº the pasturesº of the wilderness.º
