 1:1 ¶
The vision of Obadiah{gr.Obdias}. Thus saith the Lord God to Edom{gr.Idumea}; I have heard a report from the Lord, and he has sent forth a message to the nations. |
|
 1:1 ¶
The visionº
of Obadiah.º
Thusº
saithºº
Adonaiº
Yahwehº
concerning Edom;º
We have heardºº
a rumourº
fromºº
Yahweh,º
and an ambassadorº
is sentºº
among the heathen,º
Ariseºº
ye, and let us rise upºº
againstº
her in battle.º |
 1:2
Arise ye, and let us rise up against her to war. |
|
 1:2
Behold,º
I have madeºº
thee smallº
among the heathen:º
thouº
art greatlyº
despised.ºº |
 1:3 ¶
Behold, I have made thee small among the Gentiles: thou art greatly dishonoured. The pride of thine heart has elated thee, dwelling [as thou dost] in the holes of the rocks, [as one that] exalts his habitation, saying in his heart, Who will bring me down to the ground? |
|
 1:3 ¶
The prideº
of thine heartº
hath deceivedºº
thee, thou that dwellestºº
in the cleftsº
of the rock,º
whose habitationººº
[is] high;º
that saithºº
in his heart,º
Whoº
shall bring me downºº
to the ground?º |
 1:4
If thou shouldest mount up as the eagle, and if thou shouldest make thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord. |
|
 1:4
Thoughº
thou exaltºº
[thyself] as the eagle,º
and thoughº
thou setºº
thy nestº
amongº
the stars,º
thenceºº
will I bring thee down,ºº
saithºº
Yahweh.º |
 1:5
If thieves came in to thee, or robbers by night, where wouldest thou have been cast away? would they not have stolen [just] enough for themselves? and if grape-gatherers went in to thee, would they not leave a gleaning? |
|
 1:5
Ifº
thievesº
cameºº
to thee, ifº
robbersºº
by night,º
(howº
art thou cut off!)ºº
would they notº
have stolenºº
till they had enough?º
ifº
the grapegatherersºº
cameºº
to thee, would they notº
leaveºº
[some] grapes?º |
 1:6
How has Esau been searched out, and [how] have his hidden things been detected? |
|
 1:6
Howº
are [the things] of Esauº
searched out!ºº
[how] are his hiddenº
thingsº
sought up!ºº |
 1:7
They sent thee to thy coasts: all the men of thy covenant have withstood thee; thine allies have prevailed against thee, they have set snares under thee: they have no understanding. |
|
 1:7
Allº
the menºº
of thy confederacyº
have broughtºº
thee [even] toº
the border:º
the menºº
that were at peaceº
with thee have deceivedºº
thee, [and] prevailedºº
against thee; [they that eat] thy breadº
have laidºº
a woundº
underº
thee: [there is] noneº
understandingº
in him. |
 1:8
In that day, saith the Lord, I will destroy the wise men out of Edom{gr.Idumea}, and understanding out of the mount of Esau. |
|
 1:8
Shall I notº
in thatº
day,º
saithºº
Yahweh,º
even destroyºº
the wiseº
[men] out of Edom,ºº
and understandingº
out of the mountºº
of Esau?º |
 1:9
And thy warriors from Teman{gr.Thaeman} shall be dismayed, to the end that man may be cut off from the mount of Esau. |
|
 1:9
And thy mightyº
[men], O Teman,º
shall be dismayed,ºº
to the end thatº
every oneº
of the mountºº
of Esauº
may be cut offºº
by slaughter.ºº |
 1:10 ¶
Because of the slaughter and the sin [committed against] thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever. |
|
 1:10 ¶
For [thy] violenceºº
against thy brotherº
Jacobº
shameº
shall coverºº
thee, and thou shalt be cut offºº
for ever.º |
 1:11
From the day that thou stoodest in opposition [to him], in the days when foreigners were taking captive his forces, and strangers entered into his gates, and cast lots on Jerusalem, thou also wast as one of them. |
|
 1:11
In the dayº
that thou stoodestºº
on the other side,ºº
in the dayº
that the strangersºº
carried away captiveºº
his forces,º
and foreignersº
enteredºº
intoº
his gates,º
and castºº
lotsº
uponº
Jerusalem,º
evenº
thouº
[wast] as oneº
ofº
them. |
 1:12
And thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day of strangers; nor shouldest thou have rejoiced against the children of Judah{gr.Juda} in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have boasted in the day of [their] affliction. |
|
 1:12
But thou shouldest notº
have lookedºº
on the dayº
of thy brotherº
in the dayº
that he became a stranger;ºº
neitherº
shouldest thou have rejoicedºº
over the childrenº
of Judahº
in the dayº
of their destruction;ºº
neitherº
shouldest thou have spokenº
proudlyººº
in the dayº
of distress.º |
 1:13
Neither shouldest thou have gone into the gates of the people in the day of their troubles; nor yet shouldest thou have looked upon their gathering in the day of their destruction, nor shouldest thou have attacked their host in the day of their perishing. |
|
 1:13
Thou shouldest notº
have enteredºº
into the gateº
of my peopleº
in the dayº
of their calamity;º
yea,º
thouº
shouldest notº
have lookedºº
on their afflictionº
in the dayº
of their calamity,º
norº
have laidºº
[hands] on their substanceº
in the dayº
of their calamity;º |
 1:14
Neither shouldest thou have stood at the opening of their passages, to destroy utterly those of them that were escaping; neither shouldest thou have shut up his fugitives in the day of affliction. |
|
 1:14
Neitherº
shouldest thou have stoodºº
inº
the crossway,º
to cut offººº
those of his that did escape;º
neitherº
shouldest thou have delivered upºº
those of his that did remainº
in the dayº
of distress.º |
 1:15
For the day of the Lord is near upon all the Gentiles: as thou have done, so shall it be [done] to thee: thy recompense shall be returned on thine [own] head. |
|
 1:15
Forº
the dayº
of Yahwehº
[is] nearº
uponº
allº
the heathen:º
asº
thou hast done,ºº
it shall be doneºº
unto thee: thy rewardº
shall returnºº
upon thine own head.º |
 1:16
For as thou hast drunk upon my holy mountain, [so] shall all the nations drink wine; they shall drink, and go down, and be as if they were not. |
|
 1:16
Forº
asº
ye have drunkºº
uponº
my holyº
mountain,º
[so] shall allº
the heathenº
drinkºº
continually,º
yea, they shall drink,ºº
and they shall swallow down,ºº
and they shall beº
as though they had notº
been.º |
 1:17 ¶
But on mount Zion{gr.Sion} there shall be deliverance, and there shall be a sanctuary; and the house of Jacob shall take for an inheritance those that took them for an inheritance. |
|
 1:17 ¶
But upon mountº
Zionº
shall beº
deliverance,º
and there shall beº
holiness;º
and the houseº
of Jacobº
shall possessººº
their possessions.º |
 1:18
And the house of Jacob shall be fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau [shall be] for stubble; and [Israel] shall flame forth against them, and shall devour them, and there shall not be a corn-field [left] to the house of Esau; because the Lord has spoken. |
|
 1:18
And the houseº
of Jacobº
shall beº
a fire,º
and the houseº
of Josephº
a flame,º
and the houseº
of Esauº
for stubble,º
and they shall kindleºº
in them, and devourºº
them; and there shall notº
beº
[any] remainingº
of the houseº
of Esau;º
forº
Yahwehº
hath spokenºº
[it]. |
 1:19
And they [that dwell] in the south shall inherit the mount of Esau, and they in the plain the Philistines: and they shall inherit the mount of Ephraim, and the plain of Samaria, and Benjamin, and the land of Gilead{gr.Galaad}. |
|
 1:19
And [they of] the southº
shall possessººº
the mountº
of Esau;º
and [they of] the plainºº
the Philistines:º
and they shall possessººº
the fieldsº
of Ephraim,º
and the fieldsº
of Samaria:º
and Benjaminº
[shall possess]º
Gilead.º |
 1:20
And this [shall be] the domain of the captivity of the children of Israel, the land of the Canaanites{gr.Chananites} as far as Sarepta; and the captives of Jerusalem [shall inherit] as far as Ephrath{gr.Ephratha}; they shall inherit the cities of the south. |
|
 1:20
And the captivityº
of thisº
hostº
of the childrenº
of Israelº
[shall possess] thatº
of the Canaanites,º
[even] untoº
Zarephath;º
and the captivityº
of Jerusalem,º
whichº
[is] in Sepharad,º
shall possessººº
the citiesº
of the south.º |
 1:21
And they that escape shall come up from mount Zion{gr.Sion}, to take vengeance on the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the Lord's. |
|
 1:21
And savioursºº
shall come upºº
on mountº
Zionº
to judgeºº
theº
mountº
of Esau;º
and the kingdomº
shall beº
Yahweh's.º |
