 1:1 ¶
Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah{gr.Jonas} the son of Amathi, saying, |
|
 1:1 ¶
Now the wordº
of Yahwehº
cameº
untoº
Jonahº
the sonº
of Amittai,º
saying,ºº |
 1:2
Rise, and go to Nineveh{gr.Nineve}, the great city, and preach in it; for the cry of its wickedness is come up to me. |
|
 1:2
Arise,ºº
goººº
toº
Nineveh,º
that greatº
city,º
and cryºº
againstº
it; forº
their wickednessº
is come upºº
beforeº
me. |
 1:3
But Jonah{gr.Jonas} rose up to flee to Tharshish{gr.Tharsis} from the presence of the Lord. And he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tharshish{gr.Tharsis}: and he paid his fare, and went up into it, to sail with them to Tharshish{gr.Tharsis} from the presence of the Lord. |
|
 1:3
But Jonahº
rose upºº
to fleeºº
unto Tarshishº
from the presenceºº
of Yahweh,º
and went downºº
to Joppa;º
and he foundºº
a shipº
goingºº
to Tarshish:º
so he paidºº
the fareº
thereof, and went downºº
into it, to goºº
withº
them unto Tarshishº
from the presenceºº
of Yahweh.º |
 1:4 ¶
And the Lord raised up a wind on the sea; and there was a great storm on the sea, and the ship was in danger of being broken. |
|
 1:4 ¶
But Yahwehº
sent outºº
a greatº
windº
intoº
the sea,º
and there wasº
a mightyº
tempestº
in the sea,º
so that the shipº
was likeºº
to be broken.ºº |
 1:5
And the sailors were alarmed, and cried every one to his god, and cast out the wares that were in the ship into the sea, that it might be lightened of them. But Jonah{gr.Jonas} was gone down into the hold of the ship, and was asleep, and snored. |
|
 1:5
Then the marinersº
were afraid,ºº
and criedºº
every manº
untoº
his elohim,º
and cast forthººº
the waresº
thatº
[were] in the shipº
intoº
the sea,º
to lightenºº
[it] ofºº
them. But Jonahº
was gone downºº
intoº
the sidesº
of the ship;º
and he lay,ºº
and was fast asleep.ºº |
 1:6
And the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, Why snorest thou? arise, and call upon thy God, that God may save us, and we perish not. |
|
 1:6
So the shipmasterºº
cameºº
toº
him, and saidºº
unto him, Whatº
meanest thou, O sleeper?ºº
arise,ºº
callºº
uponº
thy Elohim,º
if so beº
that Elohimº
will thinkºº
upon us, that we perishºº
not.º |
 1:7
And each man said to his neighbour, Come, let us cast lots, and find out for whose sake this mischief is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah{gr.Jonas}. |
|
 1:7
And they saidºº
every oneº
toº
his fellow,º
Come,ººº
and let us castºº
lots,º
that we may knowºº
for whose causeºº
thisº
evilº
[is] upon us. So they castºº
lots,º
and the lotº
fellºº
uponº
Jonah.º |
 1:8
And they said to him, Tell us what is thine occupation, and whence comest thou, and of what country and what people art thou? |
|
 1:8
Then saidºº
they untoº
him, Tellºº
us, we pray thee,º
for whose causeºº
thisº
evilº
[is] upon us; Whatº
[is] thine occupation?º
and whenceºº
comestºº
thou? whatº
[is] thy country?º
and of whatººº
peopleº
[art] thou?º |
 1:9
And he said to them, I am a servant of the Lord; and I worship the Lord God of heaven, who made the sea, and the dry [land]. |
|
 1:9
And he saidºº
untoº
them, Iº
[am] an Hebrew;º
and Iº
fearºº
Yahweh,º
the Elohimº
of heaven,º
whichº
hath madeººº
the seaº
and the dryº
[land]. |
 1:10
Then the men feared exceedingly, and said to him, What is this [that] thou hast done? for the men knew that he was fleeing from the face of the Lord, because he had told them. |
|
 1:10
Then were the menºº
exceedinglyºº
afraid,ººº
and saidºº
untoº
him, Whyº
hast thou doneºº
this?º
Forº
the menºº
knewºº
thatº
heº
fledºº
from the presenceºº
of Yahweh,º
becauseº
he had toldºº
them. |
 1:11 ¶
And they said to him, What shall we do to thee, that the sea may be calm to us? for the sea rose, and lifted its wave exceedingly. |
|
 1:11 ¶
Then saidºº
they untoº
him, Whatº
shall we doºº
unto thee, that the seaº
may be calmºº
untoºº
us? forº
the seaº
wrought,ºº
and was tempestuous.ºº |
 1:12
And Jonah{gr.Jonas} said to them, Take me up, and cast me into the sea, and the sea shall be calm to you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you. |
|
 1:12
And he saidºº
untoº
them, Take me up,ºº
and cast me forthºº
intoº
the sea;º
so shall the seaº
be calmºº
untoºº
you: forº
Iº
knowºº
thatº
for my sakeº
thisº
greatº
tempestº
[is] uponº
you. |
 1:13
And the men tried hard to return to the land, and were not able: for the sea rose and grew more and more tempestuous against them. |
|
 1:13
Nevertheless the menºº
rowedº
hardºº
to bringºº
[it] toº
the land;º
but they couldºº
not:º
forº
the seaº
wrought,ºº
and was tempestuousºº
againstº
them. |
 1:14
And they cried to the Lord, and said, Forbid it, Lord: let us not perish for the sake of this man's life, and bring not righteous blood upon us: for thou, Lord, hast done as thou wouldest. |
|
 1:14
Wherefore they criedºº
untoº
Yahweh,º
and said,ºº
We beseech thee,ºº
O Yahweh,º
we beseech thee,º
let us notº
perishºº
for thisº
man'sº
life,º
and layºº
notº
uponº
us innocentºº
blood:º
forº
thou,º
O Yahweh,º
hast doneºº
asº
it pleasedºº
thee. |
 1:15
So they took Jonah{gr.Jonas}, and cast him out into the sea: and the sea ceased from its raging. |
|
 1:15
So they took upººº
Jonah,º
and cast him forthºº
intoº
the sea:º
and the seaº
ceasedºº
from her raging.ºº |
 1:16
And the men feared the Lord very greatly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord, and vowed vows. |
|
 1:16
Then the menºº
fearedºººº
Yahwehº
exceedingly,ºº
and offeredºº
a sacrificeº
unto Yahweh,º
and madeºº
vows.º |
 1:17 ¶
Now the Lord had commanded a great whale to swallow up Jonah{gr.Jonas}: and Jonah{gr.Jonas} was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights. |
|
 1:17 ¶
Now Yahwehº
had preparedºº
a greatº
fishº
to swallow upººº
Jonah.º
And Jonahº
wasº
in the bellyº
of the fishº
threeº
daysº
and threeº
nights.º |
