Jonah 1

1 Jonah is sent to Nineveh, fleeth to Tarshish. 4 He is bewrayed by a tempest, 11 thrown into the sea, 17 and swallowed by a fish.

 1:1 The word 1697 of the LORD 3068 came 1961 to Jonah 3124 the son 1121 of Amittai 573 saying 559,

 1:2 “Arise 6965, go 1980 to Nineveh 5210 the great 1419 city 5892b and cry 7121 against 5921 it, for their wickedness 7463a has come 5927 up before 6440 Me.”

 1:3 But Jonah 3124 rose 6965 up to flee 1272 to Tarshish 8659 from the presence 6440 of the LORD 3068. So he went 3381 down 3381 to Joppa 3305, found 4672 a ship 591 which was going 935 to Tarshish 8659, paid 5414 the fare 7939 and went 3381 down 3381 into it to go 935 with them to Tarshish 8659 from the presence 6440 of the LORD 3068.

 1:4 ¶ The LORD 3068 hurled 2904 a great 1419 wind 7307 on the sea 3220 and there was a great 1419 storm 5591a on the sea 3220 so that the ship 591 was about to break 7665 up.

 1:5 Then the sailors 4419 became 3372a afraid 3372a and every 376 man 376 cried 2199 to his god 430, and they threw 2904 the cargo 3627 which 834 was in the ship 591 into the sea 3220 to lighten 7043 [it] for them. But Jonah 3124 had gone 3381 below 3381 into the hold 3411 of the ship 5600, lain 7901 down 7901 and fallen 7290a sound 7290a asleep 7290a.

 1:6 So the captain 7227b 2259 approached 7126 him and said 559, “How 4100 is it that you are sleeping 7290a? Get 6965 up, call 7121 on your god 430. Perhaps 194 [your] god 430 will be concerned 6245b about us so that we will not perish 6.”

 1:7 ¶ Each 376 man 376 said 559 to his mate 7453, “Come 1980, let us cast 5307 lots 1486 so we may learn 3045 on whose 4310 account 7945 this 2088 calamity 7463a [has struck] us.” So they cast 5307 lots 1486 and the lot 1486 fell 5307 on Jonah 3124.

 1:8 Then they said 559 to him, “Tell 5046 us, now 4994! On whose 4310 account [has] this 2088 calamity 7463a [struck] us? What 4100 is your occupation 4399? And where 370 do you come 935 from? What 4100 is your country 776? From what 335 2088 people 5971a are you?”

 1:9 He said 559 to them, “I am a Hebrew 5680, and I fear 3372a the LORD 3068 God 430 of heaven 8064 who 834 made 6213a the sea 3220 and the dry 3004 land 3004.”

 1:10 ¶ Then the men 376 became 3372a extremely 3374 1419 frightened 3372a and they said 559 to him, “How 4100 could you do 6213a this 2088?” For the men 376 knew 3045 that he was fleeing 1272 from the presence 6440 of the LORD 3068, because 3588 he had told 5046 them.

 1:11 So they said 559 to him, “What 4100 should we do 6213a to you that the sea 3220 may become 8367 calm 8367 for us?”—for the sea 3220 was becoming 1980 increasingly 1980 stormy 5590.

 1:12 He said 559 to them, “Pick 5375 me up and throw 2904 me into the sea 3220. Then the sea 3220 will become 8367 calm 8367 for you, for I know 3045 that on account 7945 of me this 2088 great 1419 storm 5591a [has come] upon you.”

 1:13 However, the men 376 rowed 2864 [desperately] to return 7725 to land 3004 but they could 3201 not, for the sea 3220 was becoming 1980 [even] stormier 5590 against 5921 them.

 1:14 Then they called 7121 on the LORD 3068 and said 559, “We earnestly 577 pray 577, O 577 LORD 3068, do not let us perish 6 on account of this 2088 man’s 376 life 5315 and do not put 5414 innocent 5355b blood 1818 on us; for You, O LORD 3068, have done 6213a as You have pleased 2654a.”

 1:15 ¶ So they picked 5375 up Jonah 3124, threw 2904 him into the sea 3220, and the sea 3220 stopped 5975 its raging 2197.

 1:16 Then the men 376 feared 3372a the LORD 3068 greatly 1419, and they offered 2076 a sacrifice 2077 to the LORD 3068 and made 5087 vows 5088.

 1:17 ¶ And the LORD 3068 appointed 4487 a great 1419 fish 1709 to swallow 1104 Jonah 3124, and Jonah 3124 was in the stomach 4578 of the fish 1709 three 7969 days 3117 and three 7969 nights 3915.
