 4:1 ¶ Now when Mordecai knew all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;

 4:1 ¶ When Mordecaiº perceivedººº allº thatº was done,ºº Mordecaiº rentººº his clothes,º and put onºº sackclothº with ashes,º and went outºº into the midstº of the city,º and criedºº with a loudº and a bitterº cry;º

 4:2 and he came even before the king's gate: for none might enter within the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.

 4:2 And cameºº evenº beforeº the king'sº gate:º forº noneº [might] enterºº intoº the king'sº gateº clothedº with sackcloth.º

 4:3 And in every province, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

 4:3 And in everyº province,º whithersoeverºº the king'sº commandmentº and his decreeº came,ºº [there was] greatº mourningº among the Jews,º and fasting,º and weeping,º and wailing;º and manyº layºº in sackclothº and ashes.º

 4:4 ¶ And Esther's maidens and her chamberlains came and told it her; and the queen was exceedingly grieved: and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take his sackcloth from off him; but he received it not.

 4:4 ¶ So Esther'sº maidsº and her chamberlainsº cameºº and toldºº [it] her. Then was the queenº exceedinglyº grieved;ºº and she sentºº raimentº to clotheººº Mordecai,º and to take awayºº his sackclothº fromºº him: but he receivedºº [it] not.º

 4:5 Then called Esther for Hathach, one of the king's chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and charged him to go to Mordecai, to know what this was, and why it was.

 4:5 Then calledºº Estherº for Hatach,º [one] of the king'sº chamberlains,ºº whomº he had appointedºº to attendº uponº her, and gave him a commandmentºº toº Mordecai,º to knowºº whatº itº [was], and whyºº itº [was].

 4:6 So Hathach went forth to Mordecai unto the broad place of the city, which was before the king's gate.

 4:6 So Hatachº went forthºº toº Mordecaiº untoº the streetº of the city,º whichº [was] beforeº the king'sº gate.º

 4:7 And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and the exact sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

 4:7 And Mordecaiº toldºº him ofº allº thatº had happenedºº unto him, andº of the sumº of the moneyº thatº Hamanº had promisedºº to payºº toº the king'sº treasuriesº for the Jews,º to destroyºº them.

 4:8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given out in Shushan to destroy them, to show it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him, for her people.

 4:8 Also he gaveºº him the copyº of the writingº of the decreeº thatº was givenºº at Shushanº to destroyºº them, to shewºº [it] untoº Esther,º and to declareºº [it] unto her, and to chargeºº herº that she should go inºº untoº the king,º to make supplicationºº unto him, and to make requestºº beforeºº him forº her people.º

 4:9 And Hathach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

 4:9 And Hatachº cameºº and toldºº Estherºº the wordsº of Mordecai.º

 4:10 ¶ Then Esther spake unto Hathach, and gave him a message unto Mordecai [saying]:

 4:10 ¶ Again Estherº spakeºº unto Hatach,º and gave him commandmentºº untoº Mordecai;º

 4:11 All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except those to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

 4:11 Allº the king'sº servants,º and the peopleº of the king'sº provinces,º do know,ºº thatº whosoever,ºº whetherº manº or woman,º shall comeºº untoº the kingº intoº the innerº court,º whoº is notº called,ºº [there is] oneº lawº of his to put [him] to death,ºº exceptº such to whomºº the kingº shall hold outººº the goldenº sceptre,º that he may live:ºº but Iº have notº been calledºº to come inºº untoº the kingº theseº thirtyº days.º

 4:12 And they told to Mordecai Esther's words.

 4:12 And they toldºº to Mordecaiºº Esther'sº words.º

 4:13 Then Mordecai bade them return answer unto Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.

 4:13 Then Mordecaiº commandedºº to answerººº Esther,º Thinkºº notº with thyselfº that thou shalt escapeºº in the king'sº house,º more than allºº the Jews.º

 4:14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then will relief and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place, but thou and thy father's house will perish: and who knoweth whether thou art not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

 4:14 Forº ifº thou altogetherºº holdest thy peaceºº at thisº time,º [then] shall there enlargementº and deliveranceº ariseºº to the Jewsº from anotherº place;ººº but thouº and thy father'sº houseº shall be destroyed:ºº and whoº knowethºº whetherº thou art comeºº to the kingdomº for [such] a timeº as this?º

 4:15 ¶ Then Esther bade them return answer unto Mordecai,

 4:15 ¶ Then Estherº badeºº [them] returnººº Mordecaiº [this answer],

 4:16 Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast in like manner; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

 4:16 Go,ººº gather togetherººº allº the Jewsº that are presentºº in Shushan,º and fastºº ye forº me, and neitherº eatºº norº drinkºº threeº days,º nightº or day:º Iº alsoº and my maidensº will fastºº likewise;º and soº will I goºº inº untoº the king,º whichº [is] notº according to the law:º and ifº I perish,ºº I perish.ºº

 4:17 So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.

 4:17 So Mordecaiº went his way,ºº and didºº according to allº thatº Estherº had commandedºº him.º
