 5:1 ¶ Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel [prophesied they] unto them.

 5:1 ¶ Then the prophets,º Haggaiº the prophet,º and Zechariahº the sonº of Iddo,º prophesiedºº untoº the Jewsº thatº [were] in Judahº and Jerusalemº in the nameº of the Godº of Israel,º [even] untoº them.

 5:2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them.

 5:2 Thenº rose upºº Zerubbabelº the sonº of Shealtiel,º and Jeshuaº the sonº of Jozadak,º and beganºº to buildºº the houseº of Godº whichº [is] at Jerusalem:º and withº themº [were] the prophetsº ofº Godº helpingºº them.

 5:3 ¶ At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?

 5:3 ¶ At the same timeº cameºº toº them Tatnai,º governorº on this sideº the river,º and Shetharboznai,º and their companions,º and saidºº thusº unto them,º Whoº hath commandedººº you to buildºº thisº house,º and to make upºº thisº wall?º

 5:4 Then we told them after this manner, what the names of the men were that were making this building.

 5:4 Thenº saidºº we unto them after this manner,º Whatº areº the namesº of the menº thatº makeºº thisº building?º

 5:5 But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, till the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it.

 5:5 But the eyeº of their Godº wasºº uponº the eldersºº of the Jews,º that they could notº causeºº themº to cease,ºº tillº the matterº cameºº to Darius:º and thenº they returned answerºº by letterº concerningº thisº [matter].

 5:6 ¶ The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent unto Darius the king;

 5:6 ¶ The copyº of the letterº thatº Tatnai,º governorº on this sideº the river,º and Shetharboznai,º and his companionsº the Apharsachites,º whichº [were] on this sideº the river,º sentºº untoº Dariusº the king:º

 5:7 they sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus: Unto Darius the king, all peace.

 5:7 They sentºº a letterº untoº him, whereinº was writtenºº thus;º Unto Dariusº the king,º allº peace.º

 5:8 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls; and this work goeth on with diligence and prospereth in their hands.

 5:8 Beº it knownºººº unto the king,º thatº we wentºº into the provinceº of Judea,º to the houseº of the greatº God,º whichº is buildedºº with greatº stones,º and timberº is laidºº in the walls,º and thisº workº goethºº fastº on,º and prosperethºº in their hands.º

 5:9 Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?

 5:9 Thenº askedºº we thoseº elders,ºº [and] saidºº unto them thus,º Whoº commandedººº you to buildºº thisº house,º and to make upºº theseº walls?º

 5:10 We asked them their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were at the head of them.

 5:10 We askedºº their namesº also,º to certifyºº thee, thatº we might writeºº the namesº of the menº thatº [were] the chiefº of them.

 5:11 And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and finished.

 5:11 And thusº they returnedºº us answer,º saying,ºº Weº areº the servantsº ofº the Godº of heavenº and earth,º and buildºº the houseº thatº wasºº buildedºº theseº manyº yearsº ago,ºº which a greatº kingº of Israelº buildedºº and set up.ºº

 5:12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

 5:12 Butº afterº thatº our fathersº had provokedºº the Godº of heavenº unto wrath,ºººº he gaveºº themº into the handº of Nebuchadnezzarº the kingº of Babylon,º the Chaldean,º who destroyedºº thisº house,º and carriedºº the peopleº awayººº into Babylon.º

 5:13 But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God.

 5:13 Butº in the firstº yearº of Cyrusº the kingº ofº Babylonº [the same] kingº Cyrusº madeºº a decreeº to buildºº thisº houseº of God.º

 5:14 And the gold and silver vessels also of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;

 5:14 And the vesselsº alsoº ofº goldº and silverº ofº the houseº of God,º whichº Nebuchadnezzarº tookºº out ofº the templeº thatº [was] in Jerusalem,º and broughtºº themº into the templeº ofº Babylon,º thoseº did Cyrusº the kingº takeºº out ofº the templeº ofº Babylon,º and they were deliveredºº unto [one], whose nameº [was] Sheshbazzar,º whomº he had madeºº governor;º

 5:15 and he said unto him, Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in its place.

 5:15 And saidºº unto him, Takeºº theseºº vessels,º go,ºº carryºº themº into the templeº thatº [is] in Jerusalem,º and let the houseº of Godº be buildedºº inº his place.º

 5:16 Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundations of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not completed.

 5:16 Thenº cameºº the sameº Sheshbazzar,º [and] laidºº the foundationº ofº the houseº of Godº whichº [is] in Jerusalem:º and sinceº that timeº even untilº nowº hath it been in building,ºº and [yet] it is notº finished.ºº

 5:17 Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure-house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

 5:17 Nowº therefore, ifº [it seem] goodº toº the king,º let there be searchºº madeº in the king'sº treasureº house,º whichº [is] thereº at Babylon,º whetherº it beº [so], thatº a decreeº was madeºº ofº Cyrusº the kingº to buildºº thisº houseº of Godº at Jerusalem,º and let the kingº sendºº his pleasureº toº us concerningº this matter.º
