 1:1 ¶ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.

 1:1 ¶ There wasº a manº in the landº of Uz,º whose nameº [was] Job;º and thatº manº wasº perfectº and upright,º and one that fearedº God,º and eschewedºº evil.ºº

 1:2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

 1:2 And there were bornºº unto him sevenº sonsº and threeº daughters.º

 1:3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

 1:3 His substanceº also wasº sevenº thousandº sheep,º and threeº thousandº camels,º and fiveº hundredº yokeº of oxen,º and fiveº hundredº she asses,º and a veryº greatº household;º so that thisº manº wasº the greatestº of allºº the menº of the east.º

 1:4 And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

 1:4 And his sonsº wentºº and feastedººº [in their] houses,º every oneº his day;º and sentºº and calledºº for their threeº sistersº to eatºº and to drinkºº withº them.

 1:5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

 1:5 And it wasº so, whenº the daysº of [their] feastingº were gone about,ºº that Jobº sentºº and sanctifiedºº them, and rose up earlyºº in the morning,º and offeredºº burnt offeringsº [according] to the numberº of them all:º forº Jobº said,ºº It may beº that my sonsº have sinned,ºº and cursedºº Godº in their hearts.º Thusº didºº Jobº continually.ºº

 1:6 ¶ Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.

 1:6 ¶ Now there wasº a dayº when the sonsº of Godº cameºº to presentºº themselvesº beforeº the LORD,º and Satanº cameºº alsoº amongº them.

 1:7 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

 1:7 And the LORDº saidºº untoº Satan,º Whenceºº comestºº thou? Then Satanº answeredººº the LORD,º and said,ºº From going to and froººº in the earth,º and from walking up and downººº in it.

 1:8 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.

 1:8 And the LORDº saidºº untoº Satan,º Hast thou consideredºººº my servantº Job,º thatº [there is] noneº like himº in the earth,º a perfectº and an uprightº man,º one that fearethº God,º and eschewethºº evil?ºº

 1:9 Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

 1:9 Then Satanº answeredººº the LORD,º and said,ºº Doth Jobº fearºº Godº for nought?º

 1:10 Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

 1:10 Hast notº thouº made an hedgeºº aboutº him, and aboutº his house,º and aboutº allº thatº he hath on every side?ºº thou hast blessedºº the workº of his hands,º and his substanceº is increasedºº in the land.º

 1:11 But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

 1:11 Butº put forthºº thine handº now,º and touchºº allº thatº he hath, andº he will curseººº thee toº thy face.º

 1:12 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.

 1:12 And the LORDº saidºº untoº Satan,º Behold,º allº thatº he hath [is] in thy power;º onlyº uponº himself put not forthººº thine hand.º So Satanº went forthºº fromºº the presenceº of the LORD.º

 1:13 ¶ And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,

 1:13 ¶ And there wasº a dayº when his sonsº and his daughtersº [were] eatingºº and drinkingºº wineº in their eldestº brother'sº house:º

 1:14 that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;

 1:14 And there cameºº a messengerº untoº Job,º and said,ºº The oxenº wereº plowing,ºº and the assesº feedingºº besideºº them:

 1:15 and the Sabeans fell [upon them], and took them away: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

 1:15 And the Sabeansº fellºº [upon them], and took them away;ºº yea, they have slainºº the servantsº with the edgeº of the sword;º and Iº onlyº am escapedºº aloneº to tellºº thee.

 1:16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

 1:16 While heº [was] yetº speaking,ºº there cameºº also another,º and said,ºº The fireº of Godº is fallenºº fromº heaven,º and hath burned upºº the sheep,º and the servants,º and consumedºº them; and Iº onlyº am escapedºº aloneº to tellºº thee.

 1:17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

 1:17 While heº [was] yetº speaking,ºº there cameºº also another,º and said,ºº The Chaldeansº madeº outºº threeº bands,º and fellºº uponº the camels,º and have carried them away,ºº yea, and slainºº the servantsº with the edgeº of the sword;º and Iº onlyº am escapedºº aloneº to tellºº thee.

 1:18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;

 1:18 While heº [was] yetº speaking,ºº there cameºº also another,º and said,ºº Thy sonsº and thy daughtersº [were] eatingºº and drinkingºº wineº in their eldestº brother'sº house:º

 1:19 and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

 1:19 And, behold,º there cameºº a greatº windº fromºº the wilderness,º and smoteºº the fourº cornersº of the house,º and it fellºº uponº the young men,º and they are dead;ºº and Iº onlyº am escapedºº aloneº to tellºº thee.

 1:20 Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;

 1:20 Then Jobº arose,ºº and rentººº his mantle,º and shavedººº his head,º and fell downºº upon the ground,º and worshipped,ºº

 1:21 and he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.

 1:21 And said,ºº Nakedº came I outºº of my mother'sº womb,ººº and nakedº shall I returnºº thither:º the LORDº gave,ºº and the LORDº hath taken away;ºº blessedºº beº the nameº of the LORD.º

 1:22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

 1:22 In allº thisº Jobº sinnedºº not,º norº chargedºº Godº foolishly.º
