 12:1 ¶
And the Lord sent Nathan the prophet to David; and he went in to him, and said to him, There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor. |
|
 12:1 ¶
And Yahwehº
sentººº
Nathanº
untoº
David.º
And he cameºº
untoº
him, and saidºº
unto him, There wereº
twoº
menºº
in oneº
city;º
the oneº
rich,º
and the otherº
poor.ºº |
 12:2
And the rich [man] had very many flocks and herds. |
 12:2
The richº
[man] hadº
exceedingº
manyºº
flocksº
and herds:º |
 12:3
But the poor [man had] only one little ewe lamb, which he had purchased, and preserved, and reared; an it grew up with himself and his children in common; it ate of his bread and drank of his cup, and slept in his bosom, and was to him as a daughter. |
 12:3
But the poorºº
[man] had nothing,ºº
saveºº
oneº
littleº
ewe lamb,º
whichº
he hadº
boughtºº
and nourished up:ºº
and it grew upºº
togetherº
withº
him, and withº
his children;º
it did eatºº
of his own meat,ºº
and drankºº
of his own cup,ºº
and layºº
in his bosom,º
and wasº
unto him as a daughter.º |
 12:4
And a traveller came to the rich man, and he spared to take of his flocks and of his herds, to dress for the traveller that came to him; and he took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that came to him. |
 12:4
And there cameºº
a travellerº
unto the richº
man,º
and he sparedºº
to takeºº
of his own flockºº
and of his own herd,ºº
to dressºº
for the wayfaring manºº
that was comeºº
unto him; but tookºº
the poorºº
man'sºº
lamb,º
and dressedºº
it for the manº
that was comeºº
toº
him. |
 12:5
And David was greatly moved with anger against the man; and David said to Nathan, [As] the Lord lives, the man that did this thing shall surely die. |
 12:5
And David'sº
angerº
was greatlyº
kindledºº
against the man;º
and he saidºº
toº
Nathan,º
[As] Yahwehº
liveth,º
the manº
that hath doneºº
thisº
[thing] shall surelyº
die:ººº |
 12:6
And he shall restore the lamb seven-fold, because he has not spared. |
 12:6
And he shall restoreºº
the lambº
fourfold,º
becauseºº
he didººº
thisº
thing,º
and becauseºº
he had noº
pity.ºº |
 12:7 ¶
And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man that has done this. Thus says the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee to be king over Israel, and I rescued thee out the hand of Saul; |
 12:7 ¶
And Nathanº
saidºº
toº
David,º
Thouº
[art] the man.º
Thusº
saithºº
Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israel,º
Iº
anointedºº
thee kingº
overº
Israel,º
and Iº
deliveredºº
thee out of the handºº
of Saul;º |
 12:8
and I gave thee the house of thy lord, and the wives of thy lord into thy bosom, and I gave to thee the house of Israel and Judah{gr.Juda}; and if that had been little, I would have given thee yet more. |
 12:8
And I gaveºº
theeº
thy adon'sº
house,º
and thy adon'sº
wivesº
into thy bosom,º
and gaveºº
theeº
the houseº
of Israelº
and of Judah;º
and ifº
[that had been] too little,º
I would moreover have givenºº
unto thee suchº
and suchº
things.º |
 12:9
Why hast thou set at nought the word of the Lord, to do that which is evil in his eyes? thou hast slain Uriah{gr.Urias} the Hittite{gr.Chettite} with the sword, and thou hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and thou hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. |
 12:9
Whereforeº
hast thou despisedººº
the commandmentº
of Yahweh,º
to doºº
evilº
in his sight?º
thou hast killedººº
Uriahº
the Hittiteº
with the sword,º
and hast takenºº
his wifeº
[to be] thy wife,º
and hast slainºº
him with the swordº
of the childrenº
of Ammon.º |
 12:10
Now therefore the sword shall not depart from thy house for ever, because thou has set me at nought, and thou hast taken the wife of Uriah{gr.Urias} the Hittite{gr.Chettite}, to be thy wife. |
 12:10
Nowº
therefore the swordº
shall neverººº
departºº
from thine house;ºº
becauseºº
thou hast despisedºº
me, and hast takenººº
the wifeº
of Uriahº
the Hittiteº
to beº
thy wife.º |
 12:11
Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will raise up against thee evil out of thy house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and will give them to thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. |
 12:11
Thusº
saithºº
Yahweh,º
Behold,º
I will raise upºº
evilº
againstº
thee out of thine own house,ºº
and I will takeººº
thy wivesº
before thine eyes,º
and giveºº
[them] unto thy neighbour,º
and he shall lieºº
withº
thy wivesº
in the sightº
of thisº
sun.º |
 12:12
For thou didst it secretly, but I will do this thing in the sight of all Israel, and before the sun. |
 12:12
Forº
thouº
didstºº
[it] secretly:º
but Iº
will doººº
thisº
thingº
beforeº
allº
Israel,º
and beforeº
the sun.º |
 12:13
And David said to Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said to David, And the Lord has put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. |
 12:13
And Davidº
saidºº
untoº
Nathan,º
I have sinnedºº
against Yahweh.º
And Nathanº
saidºº
untoº
David,º
Yahwehº
alsoº
hath put awayºº
thy sin;º
thou shalt notº
die.ºº |
 12:14
Only because thou hast given great occasion of provocation to the enemies of the Lord by this thing, thy son also that is born to thee shall surely die. |
 12:14
Howbeit,º
becauseº
by thisº
deedº
thou hast givenºº
great occasionººº
to the enemiesºº
of Yahwehº
to blaspheme,ºº
the childº
alsoº
[that is] bornº
unto thee shall surelyºº
die.ºº |
 12:15 ¶
And Nathan departed to his house. And the Lord smote the child, which the wife of Uriah{gr.Urias} the Hittite{gr.Chettite} bore to David, and it was ill. |
 12:15 ¶
And Nathanº
departedººº
untoº
his house.º
And Yahwehº
struckººº
the childº
thatº
Uriah'sº
wifeº
bareºº
unto David,º
and it was very sick.ºº |
 12:16
And David enquired of God concerning the child, and David fasted, and went in and lay all night upon the ground. |
 12:16
Davidº
therefore besoughtººº
Elohimº
forº
the child;º
and Davidº
fasted,ººº
and wentº
in,ºº
and layºº
allº
nightºº
upon the earth.º |
 12:17
And the elders of his house arose [and went] to him to raise him up from the ground, but he would not [rise], nor did he eat bread with them. |
 12:17
And the eldersº
of his houseº
arose,ºº
[and went] toº
him, to raise him upºº
fromº
the earth:º
but he wouldºº
not,º
neitherº
did he eatºº
breadº
withº
them. |
 12:18
And it came to pass on the seventh day that the child died: and the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive we spoke to him, and he hearkened not to our voice; and thou should we tell him that the child is dead?-- so would he do [himself] harm. |
 12:18
And it came to passº
on the seventhº
day,º
that the childº
died.ºº
And the servantsº
of Davidº
fearedºº
to tellºº
him thatº
the childº
was dead:ºº
forº
they said,ºº
Behold,º
while the childº
wasº
yet alive,º
we spakeºº
untoº
him, and he would notº
hearkenºº
unto our voice:º
howº
will he thenºº
vexºº
himself,ºº
if we tellººº
him that the childº
is dead?ºº |
 12:19
And David understood that his servants were whispering, and David perceived that the child was dead: and David said to his servants, Is the child dead? and they said, He is dead. |
 12:19
But when Davidº
sawºº
thatº
his servantsº
whispered,ºº
Davidº
perceivedºº
thatº
the childº
was dead:ºº
therefore Davidº
saidºº
untoº
his servants,º
Is the childº
dead?ºº
And they said,ºº
He is dead.ºº |
 12:20
Then David rose up from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his raiment, and went into the house of God, and worshipped him; and went into his own house, and called for bread to eat, and they set bread before him and he ate. |
 12:20
Then Davidº
aroseºº
from the earth,ºº
and washed,ºº
and anointedºº
[himself], and changedºº
his apparel,º
and cameºº
into the houseº
of Yahweh,º
and worshipped:ºº
then he cameºº
toº
his own house;º
and when he required,ºº
they setºº
breadº
before him, and he did eat.ºº |
 12:21
And his servants said to him, What [is] this thing that thou hast done concerning the child? while it was yet living thou didst fast, and weep, and watch: and when the child was dead thou didst rise up, and didst eat bread, and drink. |
 12:21
Then saidºº
his servantsº
untoº
him, Whatº
thingº
[is] thisº
thatº
thou hast done?ºº
thou didst fastºº
and weepºº
for the child,º
[whileº
it was] alive;º
but whenº
the childº
was dead,ºº
thou didst riseºº
and eatºº
bread.º |
 12:22
And David said, While the child yet lived, I fasted and wept; for I said, Who knows if the Lord will pity me, and the child live? |
 12:22
And he said,ºº
While the childº
was yetº
alive,º
I fastedºº
and wept:ºº
forº
I said,ºº
Whoº
can tellºº
[whether] Yahwehº
will be graciousºººº
to me, that the childº
may live?º |
 12:23
But now it is dead, why should I fast thus? shall I be able to bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me. |
 12:23
But nowº
he is dead,ºº
whereforeºº
should Iº
fast?ºº
canºº
I bring him backº
again?ººº
Iº
shall goºº
toº
him, but heº
shall notº
returnºº
toº
me. |
 12:24 ¶
And David comforted Beersheba{gr.Bersabee} his wife, and he went in to her, and lay with her; and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his named Solomon, and the Lord loved him. |
 12:24 ¶
And Davidº
comfortedººº
Bathshebaº
his wife,º
and wentº
inºº
untoº
her, and layºº
withº
her: and she bareºº
a son,º
and he calledººº
his nameº
Solomon:º
and Yahwehº
lovedºº
him. |
 12:25
And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and called his name Jeddedi, for the Lord's sake. |
 12:25
And he sentºº
by the handº
of Nathanº
the prophet;º
and he calledººº
his nameº
Jedidiah,º
becauseº
of Yahweh.º |
 12:26 ¶
And Joab fought against Rabbah{gr.Rabbath} of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city. |
 12:26 ¶
And Joabº
foughtºº
against Rabbahº
of the childrenº
of Ammon,º
and tookººº
the royalº
city.º |
 12:27
And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah{gr.Rabbath}, and taken the city of waters. |
 12:27
And Joabº
sentºº
messengersº
toº
David,º
and said,ºº
I have foughtºº
against Rabbah,º
andº
have takenººº
the cityº
of waters.º |
 12:28
And now gather the rest of the people, and encamp against the city, an take it beforehand; lest I take the city first, and my name be called upon it. |
 12:28
Nowº
therefore gatherººº
the restº
of the peopleº
together,ºº
and encampºº
againstº
the city,º
and takeºº
it: lestº
Iº
takeººº
the city,º
and it be calledºº
afterº
my name.º |
 12:29
And David gathered all the people, and went to Rabbah{gr.Rabbath}, and fought against it, and took it. |
 12:29
And Davidº
gatheredººº
allº
the peopleº
together,ºº
and wentººº
to Rabbah,º
and foughtºº
against it, and tookºº
it. |
 12:30
And he took the crown of Molchom their king from off his head, and the weight of it was a talent of gold, with precious stones, and it was upon the head of David; and he carried forth very much spoil of the city. |
 12:30
And he tookººº
their king'sº
crownº
from offºº
his head,º
the weightº
whereof [was] a talentº
of goldº
with the preciousº
stones:º
and it wasº
[set] onº
David'sº
head.º
And he brought forthºº
the spoilº
of the cityº
in greatº
abundance.ºº |
 12:31
And he brought forth the people that were in it, and put them under the saw, and under iron harrows, and axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick-kiln: and thus he did to all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem. |
 12:31
And he brought forthºº
the peopleº
thatº
[were] therein, and putºº
[them] under saws,º
and under harrowsº
of iron,º
and under axesº
of iron,º
and made them passºº
throughºº
the brickkiln:º
and thusº
didºº
he unto allº
the citiesº
of the childrenº
of Ammon.º
So Davidº
and allº
the peopleº
returnedºº
unto Jerusalem.º |
