 8:1 ¶
And behold a fowler's basket. |
|
 8:1 ¶
Thusº
hath Adonaiº
Yahwehº
shewedºº
unto me: and beholdº
a basketº
of summer fruit.º |
 8:2
And he said, What seest thou, Amos? And I said, A fowler's basket. And the Lord said to me, The end is come upon my people Israel; I will not pass by them any more. |
|
 8:2
And he said,ºº
Amos,º
whatº
seestºº
thou?º
And I said,ºº
A basketº
of summer fruit.º
Then saidºº
Yahwehº
untoº
me, The endº
is comeºº
uponº
my peopleº
of Israel;º
I will notº
againºº
passºº
byº
them any more.º |
 8:3
And the ceilings of the temple shall howl in that day, saith the Lord God: [there shall be] many a fallen one in every place; I will bring silence upon [them]. |
|
 8:3
And the songsº
of the templeº
shall be howlingsºº
in thatº
day,º
saithºº
Adonaiº
Yahweh:º
[there shall be] manyº
dead bodiesº
in everyº
place;º
they shall cast [them] forthºº
with silence.ºº |
 8:4 ¶
Hear now this, ye that oppress the poor in the morning, and drive the needy ones by tyranny from the earth, |
|
 8:4 ¶
Hearºº
this,º
O ye that swallow upºº
the needy,º
even to makeºº
the poorººº
of the landº
to fail,ºº |
 8:5
saying, When will the month pass away, and we shall sell, and the sabbath, and we shall open the treasure, to make the measure small, and to enlarge the weight, and make the balance unfair? |
|
 8:5
Saying,ºº
Whenº
will the new moonº
be gone,ºº
that we may sellºº
corn?º
and the sabbath,º
that we may set forthºº
wheat,º
making the ephahº
small,ººº
and the shekelº
great,ºº
and falsifyingºº
the balancesº
by deceit?º |
 8:6
That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for shoes; and we will trade in every kind of fruit. |
|
 8:6
That we may buyºº
the poorº
for silver,º
and the needyº
forº
a pair of shoes;º
[yea], and sellºº
the refuseº
of the wheat?º |
 8:7
The Lord swears against the pride of Jacob, None of your works shall ever be forgotten. |
|
 8:7
Yahwehº
hath swornºº
by the excellencyº
of Jacob,º
Surelyº
I will neverº
forgetºº
anyº
of their works.º |
 8:8
And shall not the land be troubled for these things, and shall not every one who dwells in it mourn? whereas destruction shall come up as a river, and shall descend as the river of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}. |
|
 8:8
Shall notº
the landº
trembleºº
forº
this,º
and every oneº
mournºº
that dwellethºº
therein? and it shall rise upºº
whollyº
as a flood;º
and it shall be cast outºº
and drowned,ºººº
as [by] the floodºº
of Egypt.º |
 8:9
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, [that] the sun shall go down at noon, and the light shall be darkened on the earth by day: |
|
 8:9
And it shall come to passº
in thatº
day,º
saithºº
Adonaiº
Yahweh,º
that I will cause the sunº
to go downºº
at noon,º
and I will darkenºº
the earthº
in the clearº
day:º |
 8:10
and I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head; and I will make them as the mourning of a beloved [friend], and those with them as a day of grief. |
|
 8:10
And I will turnºº
your feastsº
into mourning,º
and allº
your songsº
into lamentation;º
and I will bring upºº
sackclothº
uponº
allº
loins,º
and baldnessº
uponº
everyº
head;º
and I will makeºº
it as the mourningº
of an onlyº
[son], and the endº
thereof as a bitterº
day.º |
 8:11 ¶
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will send forth a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the word of the Lord. |
|
 8:11 ¶
Behold,º
the daysº
come,ºº
saithºº
Adonaiº
Yahweh,º
that I will sendºº
a famineº
in the land,º
notº
a famineº
of bread,º
norº
a thirstº
for water,º
butºº
of hearingººº
the wordsº
of Yahweh:º |
 8:12
And the waters shall be troubled from sea to sea, and from the north to the east shall [men] run hither and thither, seeking the word of the Lord, and they shall not find [it]. |
|
 8:12
And they shall wanderºº
from seaºº
toº
sea,º
and from the northºº
even toº
the east,º
they shall run to and froºº
to seekººº
the wordº
of Yahweh,º
and shall notº
findºº
[it]. |
 8:13
In that day shall the fair virgins and the young men faint for thirst; |
|
 8:13
In thatº
dayº
shall the fairº
virginsº
and young menº
faintºº
for thirst.º |
 8:14
they who swear by the propitiation of Samaria, and who say, Thy god, O Dan, lives; and, Thy god, O Beersheba{gr.Bersabee}, lives; and they shall fall, and shall no more rise again. |
|
 8:14
They that swearºº
by the sinº
of Samaria,º
and say,ºº
Thy elohim,º
O Dan,º
liveth;º
and, The mannerº
of Beershebaº
liveth;º
even they shall fall,ºº
and neverº
rise upºº
again.º |
