 2:1 ¶
And after this the king's anger was pacified, and he no more mentioned Astin, bearing in mind what she had said, and how he had condemned her. |
|
 2:1 ¶
Afterº
theseº
things,º
when the wrathº
of kingº
Ahasuerusº
was appeased,ºº
he rememberedººº
Vashti,º
and whatº
she had done,ºº
and whatº
was decreedºº
againstº
her. |
 2:2
Then the servants of the king said, Let there be sought for the king chaste [and] beautiful young virgins. |
|
 2:2
Then saidºº
the king'sº
servantsº
that ministeredºº
unto him, Let there be fairºº
youngº
virginsº
soughtºº
for the king:º |
 2:3
And let the king appoint local governors in all the provinces of his kingdom, and let them select fair [and] chaste young damsels [and bring them] to the city Shushan{gr.Susa}, into the women's apartment, and let them be consigned to the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women; and let things for purification and other attendance be given [to them]. |
|
 2:3
And let the kingº
appointºº
officersº
in allº
the provincesº
of his kingdom,º
that they may gather togetherººº
allº
the fairºº
youngº
virginsº
untoº
Shushanº
the palace,º
toº
the houseº
of the women,º
untoº
the custodyº
of Hegeº
the king'sº
chamberlain,º
keeperºº
of the women;º
and let their things for purificationº
be givenºº
[them]: |
 2:4
And let the woman who shall please the king be queen instead of Astin. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so. |
|
 2:4
And let the maidenº
whichº
pleasethººº
the kingº
be queenºº
insteadº
of Vashti.º
And the thingº
pleasedººº
the king;º
and he didº
so.ººº |
 2:5 ¶
Now there was a Jew in the city Shushan{gr.Susa}, and his name was Mordecai{gr.Mardochaeus}, the [son] of Jairus, [the son] of Semeias, [the son] of Cisaeus, of the tribe of Benjamin; |
|
 2:5 ¶
[Now] in Shushanº
the palaceº
there wasº
a certainº
Jew,º
whose nameº
[was] Mordecai,º
the sonº
of Jair,º
the sonº
of Shimei,º
the sonº
of Kish,º
a Benjamite;º |
 2:6
who had been brought a prisoner from Jerusalem, which Nebuchadnezzar{gr.Nabuchodonosor} king of Babylon had carried into captivity. |
|
 2:6
Whoº
had been carried awayºº
from Jerusalemºº
withº
the captivityº
whichº
had been carried awayºº
withº
Jeconiahº
kingº
of Judah,º
whomº
Nebuchadnezzarº
the kingº
of Babylonº
had carried away.ºº |
 2:7
And he had a foster child, daughter of Amminadab{gr.Aminadab} his father's brother, and her name [was] Esther; and when her parents were dead, he brought her up for a wife for himself: and the damsel was beautiful. |
|
 2:7
And he brought upºººº
Hadassah,º
thatº
[is], Esther,º
his uncle'sº
daughter:º
forº
she had neitherº
fatherº
nor mother,º
and the maidº
[was] fairºº
and beautiful;ºº
whom Mordecai,º
when her fatherº
and motherº
were dead,º
tookºº
for his own daughter.º |
 2:8 ¶
And because the king's ordinance was published, many damsels were gathered to the city Shushan{gr.Susa} under the hand of Ai{gr.Gai}; and Esther was brought to Ai{gr.Gai} the keeper of the women. |
|
 2:8 ¶
So it came to pass,º
when the king'sº
commandmentº
and his decreeº
was heard,ºº
and when manyº
maidensº
were gathered togetherºº
untoº
Shushanº
the palace,º
toº
the custodyº
of Hegai,º
that Estherº
was broughtºº
also untoº
the king'sº
house,º
toº
the custodyº
of Hegai,º
keeperºº
of the women.º |
 2:9
And the damsel pleased him, and she found favour in his sight; and he hasted to give her the things for purification, and her portion, and the seven maidens appointed her out of the palace: and he treated her and her maidens well in the women's apartment. |
|
 2:9
And the maidenº
pleasedººº
him, and she obtainedºº
kindnessº
ofº
him;º
and he speedilyºº
gaveºº
herº
her things for purification,º
withº
such things as belongedº
to her, and sevenº
maidens,º
[which were] meetºº
to be givenºº
her, out of the king'sº
house:ººº
and he preferredºº
her and her maidsº
unto the bestº
[place] of the houseº
of the women.º |
 2:10
But Esther discovered not her family nor her kindred: for Mordecai{gr.Mardochaeus} had charged her not to tell. |
|
 2:10
Estherº
had notº
shewedººº
her peopleº
nor her kindred:º
forº
Mordecaiº
had chargedºº
herº
thatº
she should notº
shewºº
[it]. |
 2:11
But Mordecai{gr.Mardochaeus} used to walk every day by the women's court, to see what would become of Esther. |
|
 2:11
And Mordecaiº
walkedºº
every dayºº
beforeº
the courtº
of the women'sº
house,º
to knowººº
how Estherº
did,º
and whatº
should becomeºº
of her. |
 2:12 ¶
Now this was the time for a virgin to go into the king, when she should have fulfilled twelve months; for so are the days of purification fulfilled, six months while they are anointing themselves with oil of myrrh, and six months with spices and women's purifications. |
|
 2:12 ¶
Now when every maid'sº
turnº
was comeºº
to go inºº
toº
kingº
Ahasuerus,º
afterº
thatºº
she had beenº
twelveºº
months,º
according to the mannerº
of the women,º
(forº
soº
were the daysº
of their purificationsº
accomplished,ºº
[to wit], sixº
monthsº
with oilº
of myrrh,º
and sixº
monthsº
with sweet odours,º
and with [other] things for the purifyingº
of the women;)º |
 2:13
And then [the damsel] goes in to the king; and [the officer] to whomsoever he shall give the command, will bring her to come in with him from the women's apartment to the king's chamber. |
|
 2:13
Then thusº
cameºº
[every] maidenº
untoº
the king;ºº
whatsoeverºº
she desiredºº
was givenºº
her to goºº
withº
her out of the houseºº
of the womenº
untoº
the king'sº
house.º |
 2:14
She enters in the evening, and in the morning she departs to the second women's apartment, where Ai{gr.Gai} the king's chamberlain [is] keeper of the women: and she goes not in to the king again, unless she should be called by name. |
|
 2:14
In the eveningº
sheº
went,ºº
and on the morrowº
sheº
returnedºº
intoº
the secondº
houseº
of the women,º
toº
the custodyº
of Shaashgaz,º
the king'sº
chamberlain,º
which keptºº
the concubines:º
she came inºº
untoº
the kingº
noº
more,º
exceptºº
the kingº
delightedºº
in her, and that she were calledºº
by name.º |
 2:15 ¶
And when the time. was fulfilled for Esther the daughter of Amminadab{gr.Aminadab} the brother of Mordecai's{gr.Mardochaeus} father to go in to the king, she neglected nothing which the chamberlain, the women's keeper, commanded; for Esther found grace in the sight of all that looked upon her. |
|
 2:15 ¶
Now when the turnº
of Esther,º
the daughterº
of Abihailº
the uncleº
of Mordecai,º
whoº
had takenºº
her for his daughter,º
was comeºº
to go inºº
untoº
the king,º
she requiredºº
nothingºº
butººº
whatº
Hegaiº
the king'sº
chamberlain,º
the keeperºº
of the women,º
appointed.ºº
And Estherº
obtainedººº
favourº
in the sightº
of allº
them that lookedºº
upon her. |
 2:16
So Esther went in to king Artaxerxes in the twelfth month, which is Adar, in the seventh year of his reign. |
|
 2:16
So Estherº
was takenºº
untoº
kingº
Ahasuerusº
intoº
his houseº
royalº
in the tenthº
month,º
whichº
[is] the monthº
Tebeth,º
in the seventhº
yearº
of his reign.º |
 2:17
And the king loved Esther, and she found favour beyond all the [other] virgins: and he put on her the queen's crown. |
|
 2:17
And the kingº
lovedººº
Estherº
above allºº
the women,º
and she obtainedºº
graceº
and favourº
in his sightº
more than allºº
the virgins;º
so that he setºº
the royalº
crownº
upon her head,º
and made her queenºº
insteadº
of Vashti.º |
 2:18
And the king made a banquet for all his friends and great men for seven days, and he highly celebrated the marriage of Esther; and he made a release to those who were under his dominion. |
|
 2:18
Then the kingº
madeºº
a greatº
feastº
unto allº
his princesº
and his servants,º
[even]º
Esther'sº
feast;º
and he madeºº
a releaseº
to the provinces,º
and gaveºº
gifts,º
according to the stateº
of the king.º |
 2:19
But Mordecai{gr.Mardochaeus} served in the palace. |
|
 2:19
And when the virginsº
were gathered togetherºº
the second time,º
then Mordecaiº
satºº
in the king'sº
gate.º |
 2:20
Now Esther had not discovered her kindred; for so Mordecai{gr.Mardochaeus} commanded her, to fear God, and perform his commandments, as when she was with him: and Esther changed not her manner of life. |
|
 2:20
Estherº
had notº
[yet] shewedºº
her kindredº
nor her people;º
asº
Mordecaiº
had chargedºº
her:º
for Estherº
didºº
the commandmentº
of Mordecai,º
like asº
when she wasº
brought upº
withº
him. |
 2:21 ¶
And two chamberlains of the king, the chiefs of the body-guard, were grieved, because Mordecai{gr.Mardochaeus} was promoted; and they sought to kill king Artaxerxes. |
|
 2:21 ¶
In thoseº
days,º
while Mordecaiº
satºº
in the king'sº
gate,º
twoº
of the king'sº
chamberlains,º
Bigthanº
and Teresh,º
of those which keptººº
the door,º
were wroth,ºº
and soughtºº
to layºº
handº
on the kingº
Ahasuerus.º |
 2:22
And the matter was discovered to Mordecai{gr.Mardochaeus}, and he made it known to Esther, and she declared to the king the matter of the conspiracy. |
|
 2:22
And the thingº
was knownºº
to Mordecai,º
who toldºº
[it] unto Estherº
the queen;º
and Estherº
certifiedºº
the kingº
[thereof] in Mordecai'sº
name.º |
 2:23
And the king examined the two chamberlains, and hanged them: and the king gave orders to make a note for a memorial in the royal records of the good offices of Mordecai{gr.Mardochaeus}, as a commendation. |
|
 2:23
And when inquisitionºº
was madeº
of the matter,º
it was found out;ºº
therefore they were bothº
hangedºº
onº
a tree:º
and it was writtenºº
in the bookº
of the chroniclesºº
beforeº
the king.º |
