Brenton's Septuagint (LXX) - Holy Name KJV
LXX < < Jonah{gr.Ionas} 4 > > KJV
1 Jonah, repining at God's mercy, 4 is reproved by the type of a gourd.
 4:1 ¶
But Jonah{gr.Jonas} was very deeply grieved, and he was confounded. |
|
 4:1 ¶
But it displeasedºººº
Jonahº
exceedingly,ºº
and he was very angry.ºº |
 4:2
And he prayed to the Lord, and said, O Lord, were not these my words when I was yet in my land? therefore I made haste to flee to Tharshish{gr.Tharsis}; because I knew that thou are merciful and compassionate, long-suffering, and abundant in kindness, and repentest of evil. |
|
 4:2
And he prayedºº
untoº
Yahweh,º
and said,ºº
I prayº
thee,º
O Yahweh,º
[was] notº
thisº
my saying,º
when I wasº
yetº
inº
my country?º
Thereforeºº
I fledºº
beforeºº
unto Tarshish:º
forº
I knewºº
thatº
thouº
[art] a graciousº
El,º
and merciful,º
slowº
to anger,º
and of greatº
kindness,º
and repentestºº
thee ofº
the evil.º |
 4:3
And now, Lord God, take my life from me; for [it is] better for me to die than to live. |
|
 4:3
Therefore now,º
O Yahweh,º
take,ºº
I beseech thee,ºº
my lifeº
fromº
me; forº
[it is] betterº
for me to dieº
than to live.ºº |
 4:4 ¶
And the Lord said to Jonah{gr.Jonas}, Art thou very much grieved? |
|
 4:4 ¶
Then saidºº
Yahweh,º
Doest thou wellºº
to be angry?ºº |
 4:5
And Jonah{gr.Jonas} went out from the city, and sat over against the city; and he made for himself there a booth, and he sat under it, until he should perceive what would become of the city. |
|
 4:5
So Jonahº
went outºº
ofº
the city,º
and satºº
on the east sideºº
of the city,º
and thereº
madeºº
him a booth,º
and satºº
underº
it in the shadow,º
tillº
he might seeºº
whatº
would becomeº
of the city.º |
 4:6
And the Lord God commanded a gourd, and it came up over the head of Jonah{gr.Jonas}, to be a shadow over his head, to shade him from his calamities: and Jonah{gr.Jonas} rejoiced with great joy for the gourd. |
|
 4:6
And Yahwehº
Elohimº
preparedºº
a gourd,º
and made [it] to come upºº
overºº
Jonah,º
that it might beº
a shadowº
overº
his head,º
to deliverºº
him from his grief.ºº
So Jonahº
wasº
exceedingºº
gladºººº
ofº
the gourd.º |
 4:7
And God commanded a worm the next morning, and it smote the gourd, and it withered away. |
|
 4:7
But Elohimº
preparedºº
a wormº
when the morningº
roseºº
the next day,º
and it smoteººº
the gourdº
that it withered.ºº |
 4:8
And it came to pass at the rising of the sun, that God commanded a burning east wind; and the sun smote on the head of Jonah{gr.Jonas}, and he fainted, and despaired of his life, and said, [It is] better for me to die than to live. |
|
 4:8
And it came to pass,º
when the sunº
did arise,ºº
that Elohimº
preparedºº
a vehementº
eastº
wind;º
and the sunº
beatºº
uponº
the headº
of Jonah,º
that he fainted,ºº
and wishedºº
inº
himselfº
to die,ºº
and said,ºº
[It is] betterº
for me to dieº
than to live.ºº |
 4:9
And God said to Jonah{gr.Jonas}, Art thou very much grieved for the gourd? And he said, I am very much grieved, even to death. |
|
 4:9
And Elohimº
saidºº
toº
Jonah,º
Doest thou wellºº
to be angryºº
forº
the gourd?º
And he said,ºº
I do wellºº
to be angry,ºº
[even] untoº
death.º |
 4:10
And the Lord said, Thou hadst pity on the gourd, for which thou has not suffered, neither didst thou rear it; which came up before night, and perished before [another] night: |
|
 4:10
Then saidºº
Yahweh,º
Thouº
hast had pityºº
onº
the gourd,º
for the whichº
thou hast notº
laboured,ºº
neitherº
madest it grow;ºº
which came upº
inºº
a night,ºº
and perishedºº
inº
a night:ºº |
 4:11
and shall not I spare Nineveh{gr.Nineve}, the great city, in which dwell more than twelve myriads of human beings, who do not know their right hand or their left hand; and [also] much cattle? |
|
 4:11
And should notº
Iº
spareººº
Nineveh,º
that greatº
city,º
whereinº
areº
moreºº
than sixscoreºº
thousandºººº
personsº
thatº
cannotº
discernºº
betweenº
their right handº
and their left hand;º
and [also] muchº
cattle?º |
