 5:1 ¶ Remember, O Lord, what has happened to us: behold, and look on our reproach.

 5:1 ¶ Remember,ºº O Yahweh,º whatº is comeº upon us: consider,ºº and beholdººº our reproach.º

 5:2 Our inheritance has been turned away to aliens, our houses to strangers:

 5:2 Our inheritanceº is turnedºº to strangers,ºº our housesº to aliens.º

 5:3 we are become orphans, we have no father, our mothers are as widows.

 5:3 We areº orphansº and fatherless,ºº our mothersº [are] as widows.º

 5:4 We have drunk our water for money; our wood is sold to us [for a burden] on our neck:

 5:4 We have drunkenºº our waterº for money;º our woodº is soldººº unto us.

 5:5 we have been persecuted, we have laboured, we have had no rest.

 5:5 Our necksº [are] underº persecution:ºº we labour,ºº [and] have no rest.ººº

 5:6 Mizraim{gr.Egypt} gave the hand [to us], Asshur{gr.Assur} to their own satisfaction.

 5:6 We have givenºº the handº [to] the Egyptians,º [and to] the Assyrians,º to be satisfiedºº with bread.º

 5:7 Our fathers sinned, [and] are not: we have borne their iniquities.

 5:7 Our fathersº have sinned,ºº [and are] not;º and weº have borneºº their iniquities.º

 5:8 Servants have ruled over us: there is none to ransom [us] out of their hand.

 5:8 Servantsº have ruledºº overº us: [there is] noneº that doth deliverºº [us] out of their hand.ºº

 5:9 We shall bring in our bread with [danger of] our lives, because of the sword of the wilderness.

 5:9 We gatºº our breadº with [the peril of] our livesº becauseº ofºº the swordº of the wilderness.º

 5:10 Our skin is blackened like an oven; they are convulsed, because of the storms of famine.

 5:10 Our skinº was blackºº like an ovenº becauseº ofºº the terribleº famine.º

 5:11 They humbled the women in Zion{gr.Sion}, the virgins in the cities of Judah{gr.Juda}.

 5:11 They ravishedºº the womenº in Zion,º [and] the maidsº in the citiesº of Judah.º

 5:12 Princes were hanged up by their hands: the elders were not honoured.

 5:12 Princesº are hanged upºº by their hand:º the facesº of eldersº were notº honoured.ºº

 5:13 The chosen men lifted up [the voice in] weeping, and the youths fainted under the wood.

 5:13 They tookºº the young menº to grind,º and the childrenº fellºº under the wood.º

 5:14 And the elders ceased from the gate, the chosen men ceased from their music.

 5:14 The eldersº have ceasedºº from the gate,ºº the young menº from their musick.ºº

 5:15 The joy of our heart has ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.

 5:15 The joyº of our heartº is ceased;ºº our danceº is turnedºº into mourning.º

 5:16 The crown has fallen [from] our head: yea, woe to us! for we have sinned.

 5:16 The crownº is fallenºº [from] our head:º woeº unto us, thatº we have sinned!ºº

 5:17 For this has grief come; our heart is sorrowful: for this our eyes are darkened.

 5:17 Forº thisº our heartº isº faint;º forº theseº [things] our eyesº are dim.ºº

 5:18 Over the mountain of Zion{gr.Sion}, because it is made desolate, foxes have walked therein.

 5:18 Because ofº the mountainº of Zion,º whichº is desolate,ºº the foxesº walkºº upon it.

 5:19 But thou, O Lord, shalt dwell for ever; thy throne [shall endure] to generation and generation.

 5:19 Thou,º O Yahweh,º remainestºº for ever;º thy throneº from generationº to generation.º

 5:20 Wherefore wilt thou utterly forget us, and abandon us a long time?

 5:20 Whereforeº dost thou forgetºº us for ever,º [and] forsakeºº us so longº time?º

 5:21 Turn us, O Lord, to thee, and we shall be turned; and renew our days as before.

 5:21 Turnºº thou us untoº thee, O Yahweh,º and we shall be turned;ºº renewºº our daysº as of old.º

 5:22 For thou hast indeed rejected us; thou hast been very wroth against us.

 5:22 Butºº thou hast utterlyºº rejectedºº us; thou art veryº wrothºººº againstº us.
