 1:1 ¶ Howº doth the cityº sitºº solitary,º [that was] fullº of people!º [how] is she becomeº as a widow!º she [that was] greatº among the nations,º [and] princessº among the provinces,º [how] is she becomeº tributary!º

 1:1 ¶ How doth the city sit solitary, [that was] full of people! [how] is she become as a widow! she [that was] great among the nations, [and] princess among the provinces, [how] is she become tributary!

 1:2 She weepethºº soreºº in the night,º and her tearsº [are] onº her cheeks:º among allºº her loversºº she hath noneº to comfortºº [her]: allº her friendsº have dealt treacherouslyºº with her, they are becomeº her enemies.ºº

 1:2 She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears [are] on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort [her]: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies.

 1:3 Yehudah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.

 1:4 The waysº of Xiyyôn צִיּוֹןº do mourn,º because noneºº comeºº to the solemn feasts:º allº her gatesº are desolate:ºº her priestsº sigh,ºº her virginsº are afflicted,ºº and sheº [is] in bitterness.ºº

 1:4 The ways of Tziyyon do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she [is] in bitterness.

 1:5 Her adversariesº areº the chief,º her enemiesºº prosper;ºº forº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath afflictedºº her forº the multitudeº of her transgressions:º her childrenº are goneºº into captivityº beforeº the enemy.º

 1:5 Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for Yahweh hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.

 1:6 And fromº the daughterº of Xiyyôn צִיּוֹןº allº her beautyº is departed:ºº her princesº are becomeº like hartsº [that] findºº noº pasture,º and they are goneººº withoutº strengthº beforeº the pursuer.ºº

 1:6 And from the daughter of Tziyyon all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like harts [that] find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.

 1:7 Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº rememberedºº in the daysº of her afflictionº and of her miseriesº allº her pleasant thingsº thatº she hadº in the daysºº of old,º when her peopleº fellºº into the handº of the enemy,º and noneº did helpºº her: the adversariesº sawºº her, [and] did mockºº atº her sabbaths.º

 1:7 Yerushalaim remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her: the adversaries saw her, [and] did mock at her sabbaths.

 1:8 Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº hath grievouslyº sinned;ººº thereforeºº she isº removed:º allº that honouredºº her despiseººº her, becauseº they have seenºº her nakedness:º yea,º sheº sigheth,ºº and turnethºº backward.º

 1:8 Yerushalaim hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.

 1:12 ¶ [Is it] nothingº toº you, allº ye that passºº by?ºº behold,ºº and seeºº ifº there beº any sorrowº like unto my sorrow,º whichº is doneºº unto me, wherewithº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath afflictedºº [me] in the dayº of his fierceº anger.º

 1:12 ¶ [Is it] nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith Yahweh hath afflicted [me] in the day of his fierce anger.

 1:13 From aboveºº hath he sentºº fireº into my bones,º and it prevailethºº againstº them: he hath spreadºº a netº for my feet,º he hath turnedºº me back:º he hath madeºº me desolateºº [and] faintº allº the day.º

 1:13 From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate [and] faint all the day.

 1:15 Yahweh hath trodden under foot all my mighty [men] in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men: Yahweh hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Yehudah, [as] in a winepress.

 1:16 Forº theseº [things] Iº weep;ºº mine eye,º mine eyeº runneth downºº with water,º becauseº the comforterºº that should relieveºº my soulº is farºº fromº me: my childrenº areº desolate,ºº becauseº the enemyºº prevailed.ºº

 1:16 For these [things] I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.

 1:17 Xiyyôn צִיּוֹןº spreadeth forthºº her hands,º [and there is] noneº to comfortºº her: Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath commandedºº concerning Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹב,º [that] his adversariesº [should be] round aboutº him: Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº isº as a menstruous womanº amongº them.

 1:17 Tziyyon spreadeth forth her hands, [and there is] none to comfort her: Yahweh hath commanded concerning Yaaqov, [that] his adversaries [should be] round about him: Yerushalaim is as a menstruous woman among them.

 1:18 ¶ Yähwè יָהוֶהº is righteous;º forº I have rebelledºº against his commandment:º hear,ºº I pray you,º allº people,º and beholdºº my sorrow:º my virginsº and my young menº are goneºº into captivity.º

 1:18 ¶ Yahweh is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.

 1:19 I calledºº for my lovers,ºº [but] theyº deceivedºº me: my priestsº and mine eldersº gave up the ghostºº in the city,º whileº they soughtºº their meatº to relieveººº their souls.º

 1:21 They have heardºº thatº Iº sigh:ºº [there is] noneº to comfortºº me: allº mine enemiesºº have heardºº of my trouble;º they are gladºº thatº thouº hast doneºº [it]: thou wilt bringºº the dayº [that] thou hast called,ºº and they shall beº likeº unto me.º

 1:21 They have heard that I sigh: [there is] none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done [it]: thou wilt bring the day [that] thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me.

 1:22 Let allº their wickednessº comeºº beforeº thee; and doºº unto them, asº thou hast doneºº unto me forº allº my transgressions:º forº my sighsº [are] many,º and my heartº [is] faint.º

 1:22 Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs [are] many, and my heart [is] faint.
