 1:1 ¶ Now it came to passº in the daysº when the judgesºº ruled,ºº that there wasº a famineº in the land.º And a certain manº of Bê± Leçem Yæhûðà בֵּית־לֶחֶם־יְהוּדָהººº wentººº to sojournºº in the countryº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב,º he,º and his wife,º and his twoº sons.º

 1:1 ¶ Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Beth-Lechem-Yehudah went to sojourn in the country of Moav, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

 1:2 And the nameº of the manº [was] ´Élîmele¢ אֱלִימֶלֶך,º and the nameº of his wifeº No`ómî נָעֳמִי,º and the nameº of his twoº sonsº Maçlôn מַחלוֹןº and Cilyôn כִּליוֹן,º ´Efrä±îm אֶפרָתִיםº of Bê± Leçem Yæhûðà בֵּית־לֶחֶם־יְהוּדָה.ººº And they cameºº into the countryº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב,º and continuedº there.º

 1:2 And the name of the man [was] Elimelekh, and the name of his wife Noomi, and the name of his two sons Machlon and Kilyon, Efrathim of Beth-Lechem-Yehudah. And they came into the country of Moav, and continued there.

 1:3 And ´Élîmele¢ אֱלִימֶלֶךº No`ómî's נָעֳמִיº husbandº died;ºº and sheº was left,ºº and her twoº sons.º

 1:3 And Elimelekh Noomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.

 1:4 And they tookºº them wivesº of the womenº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב;º the nameº of the oneº [was] `Orpà עָרפָּה,º and the nameº of the otherº Rû± רוּת:º and they dwelledºº thereº about tenº years.º

 1:4 And they took them wives of the women of Moav; the name of the one [was] Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.

 1:5 And Maçlôn מַחלוֹןº and Cilyôn כִּליוֹןº diedºº alsoº bothº of them; and the womanº was leftºº of her twoº sonsººº and her husband.ºº

 1:5 And Machlon and Kilyon died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.

 1:6 ¶ Then sheº aroseºº with her daughters in law,º that she might returnºº from the countryºº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב:º forº she had heardºº in the countryº of Mô´äv מוֹאָבº how thatº Yähwè יָהוֶהº had visitedººº his peopleº in givingºº them bread.º

 1:6 ¶ Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moav: for she had heard in the country of Moav how that Yahweh had visited his people in giving them bread.

 1:7 Wherefore she went forthºº out ofº the placeº whereºº she was,º and her twoº daughters in lawº with her;º and they wentººº on the wayº to returnºº untoº the landº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה.º

 1:7 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Yehudah.

 1:8 And No`ómî נָעֳמִיº saidºº unto her twoº daughters in law,º Go,ººº returnºº eachº to her mother'sº house:º Yähwè יָהוֶהº dealºº kindlyº withº you, asº ye have dealtºº withº the dead,ºº and withº me.

 1:8 And Noomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house: Yahweh deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.

 1:9 Yähwè יָהוֶהº grantºº you that ye may findºº rest,º eachº [of you] in the houseº of her husband.º Then she kissedºº them; and they lifted upºº their voice,º and wept.ºº

 1:9 Yahweh grant you that ye may find rest, each [of you] in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

 1:10 And they saidºº unto her, Surelyº we will returnºº withº thee unto thy people.º

 1:10 And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.

 1:11 And No`ómî נָעֳמִיº said,ºº Turn again,ºº my daughters:º whyº will ye goººº withº me? [are] there yetº [any more] sonsº in my womb,º that they may beº your husbands?ºº

 1:11 And Noomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? [are] there yet [any more] sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

 1:12 Turn again,ºº my daughters,º goººº [your way]; forº I am too oldºº to haveºº an husband.º Ifº I should say,ºº I haveº hope,º [if] I should haveº an husbandº alsoº to night,º and should alsoº bearºº sons;º

 1:12 Turn again, my daughters, go [your way]; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, [if] I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;

 1:13 Would ye tarryºº for themºº tillºº they were grown?ºº would ye stayºº for themºº from havingº husbands?º nay,º my daughters;º forº it grievethºº me muchº forº your sakes thatº the handº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº is gone outºº against me.

 1:13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of Yahweh is gone out against me.

 1:14 And they lifted upºº their voice,º and weptº again:ººº and `Orpà עָרפָּהº kissedºº her mother in law;º but Rû± רוּתº claveºº unto her.

 1:14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.

 1:15 And she said,ºº Behold,º thy sister in lawº is gone backºº untoº her people,º and untoº her ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º returnºº thou afterº thy sister in law.º

 1:15 And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her elohim: return thou after thy sister in law.

 1:16 And Rû± רוּתº said,ºº Intreatºº me notº to leaveºº thee, [or] to returnºº from following afterºº thee: forº whitherºº thou goest,ººº I will go;ººº and whereº thou lodgest,ºº I will lodge:ºº thy peopleº [shall be] my people,º and thy ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº my ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º

 1:16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, [or] to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people [shall be] my people, and thy Elohim my Elohim:

 1:17 Whereº thou diest,ºº will I die,ºº and thereº will I be buried:ºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº doºº soº to me, and moreºº also,º [if ought] butº deathº partºº theeº and me.º

 1:17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: Yahweh do so to me, and more also, [if ought] but death part thee and me.

 1:18 When she sawºº thatº sheº was stedfastly mindedºº to goººº withº her, then she leftºº speakingºº untoº her.

 1:18 When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.

 1:19 ¶ So they twoº wentººº untilº they cameºº to Bê± Läçem בֵּית־לָחֶם.º And it came to pass,º when they were comeºº to Bê± Läçem בֵּית־לָחֶם,º that allº the cityº was movedºº aboutº them, and they said,ºº [Is] thisº No`ómî נָעֳמִי?º

 1:19 ¶ So they two went until they came to Beth-Lachem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-Lachem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, [Is] this Noomi?

 1:20 And she saidºº untoº them, Callºº me notº No`ómî נָעֳמִי,º callºº me Märä´ מָרָא:º forº Šadday שַׁדַּיº hath dealt veryº bitterlyººº with me.

 1:20 And she said unto them, Call me not Noomi, call me Mara: for Shadday hath dealt very bitterly with me.

 1:21 Iº went outºº full,º and Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath brought me home againºº empty:º whyº [then] callºº ye me No`ómî נָעֳמִי,º seeing Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath testifiedºº against me, and Šadday שַׁדַּיº hath afflictedºº me?

 1:21 I went out full, and Yahweh hath brought me home again empty: why [then] call ye me Noomi, seeing Yahweh hath testified against me, and Shadday hath afflicted me?

 1:22 So No`ómî נָעֳמִיº returned,ºº and Rû± רוּתº the Mô´áviyyà מוֹאֲבִיָּה,º her daughter in law,º with her,º which returnedºº out of the countryºº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב:º and theyº cameºº to Bê± Läçem בֵּית־לָחֶםº in the beginningº of barleyº harvest.º

 1:22 So Noomi returned, and Ruth the Moaviyyah, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moav: and they came to Beth-Lachem in the beginning of barley harvest.
