Now the menº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
had swornºº
in
Mixpà
מִצפָּה,º
saying,ºº
There shall notº
anyº
ofº
us giveºº
his daughterº
unto
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִיןº
to wife.º |

21:1 ¶
Now the men of Yisrael had sworn in Mitzpah, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Binyamin to wife. |
|
21:2
And the peopleº
cameºº
to the houseº
of
´Ël
אֵל,ººº
and abodeºº
thereº
tillº
evenº
beforeº
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִים,º
and lifted upºº
their voices,º
and weptººº
sore;ºº |
|
21:2
And the people came to the house of El, and abode there till even before Elohim, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore; |
|
21:3
And said,ºº
O
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִיםº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל,º
whyº
is thisº
come to passº
in
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל,º
that there should be to dayº
oneº
tribeº
lackingºº
in
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל?ºº |

21:3
And said, O Yahweh Elohim of Yisrael, why is this come to pass in Yisrael, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Yisrael? |
|
21:4
And it came to passº
on the morrow,ºº
that the peopleº
rose early,ºº
and builtºº
thereº
an altar,º
and offeredºº
burnt offeringsº
and peace offerings.º |

21:4
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. |
|
21:5
And the childrenº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
said,ºº
Whoº
[is there] among allºº
the tribesº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
thatº
cameºº
not upºº
with the congregationº
untoº
Yähwè
יָהוֶה?º
Forº
they had madeº
a greatº
oathº
concerningº
him that came not upººº
toº
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
to
Mixpà
מִצפָּה,º
saying,ºº
He shall surelyºº
be put to death.ºº |

21:5
And the children of Yisrael said, Who [is there] among all the tribes of Yisrael that came not up with the congregation unto Yahweh? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to Yahweh to Mitzpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death. |
|
21:6
And the childrenº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
repentedºº
them forº
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִיןº
their brother,º
and said,ºº
There is oneº
tribeº
cut offºº
from
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלºº
this day.º |

21:6
And the children of Yisrael repented them for Binyamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Yisrael this day. |
|
21:7
Howº
shall we doºº
for wivesº
for them that remain,ºº
seeing weº
have swornºº
by
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
that we will notº
giveºº
them of our daughtersºº
to wives?º |
|
21:7
How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by Yahweh that we will not give them of our daughters to wives? |
|
21:8 ¶
And they said,ºº
Whatº
oneº
[is there] of the tribesºº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
thatº
came not upººº
to
Mixpà
מִצפָּהº
toº
Yähwè
יָהוֶה?º
And, behold,º
there cameºº
noneºº
toº
the campº
from
Yävêš Gil`äð
יָבֵישׁ־גִּלעָדººº
toº
the assembly.º |

21:8 ¶
And they said, What one [is there] of the tribes of Yisrael that came not up to Mitzpah to Yahweh? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Yavesh-Gilad to the assembly. |
|
21:9
For the peopleº
were numbered,ºº
and, behold,º
[there were] noneºº
of the inhabitantsººº
of
Yävêš Gil`äð
יָבֵישׁ־גִּלעָדºº
there.º |
|
21:9
For the people were numbered, and, behold, [there were] none of the inhabitants of Yavesh-Gilad there. |
|
21:10
And the congregationº
sentºº
thitherº
twelveºº
thousandº
menº
of the valiantest,ººº
and commandedºº
them, saying,ºº
Goººº
and smiteººº
the inhabitantsºº
of
Yävêš Gil`äð
יָבֵישׁ־גִּלעָדºº
with the edgeº
of the sword,º
with the womenº
and the children.º |

21:10
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Yavesh-Gilad with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children. |
|
21:11
And thisº
[is] the thingº
thatº
ye shall do,ºº
Ye shall utterly destroyºº
everyº
male,º
and everyº
womanº
that hath lainºº
by man.ººº |
|
21:11
And this [is] the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man. |
|
21:12
And they foundºº
among the inhabitantsººº
of
Yävêš Gil`äð
יָבֵישׁ־גִּלעָדºº
fourº
hundredº
youngº
virgins,º
thatº
had knownºº
noº
manº
by lyingº
with any male:º
and they broughtºº
them untoº
the campº
to
Šîlò
שִׁילֹה,º
whichº
[is] in the landº
of
Cænä`an
כְּנָעַן.º |

21:12
And they found among the inhabitants of Yavesh-Gilad four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which [is] in the land of Kenaan. |
|
21:13
And the wholeº
congregationº
sentºº
[some] to speakºº
toº
the childrenº
of
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִיןº
thatº
[were] in the rockº
Rimmôn
רִמּוֹן,º
and to callºº
peaceablyº
unto them. |
|
21:13
And the whole congregation sent [some] to speak to the children of Binyamin that [were] in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them. |
|
21:14
And
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִיןº
came againºº
at thatº
time;º
and they gaveºº
them wivesº
whichº
they had saved aliveºº
of the womenºº
of
Yävêš Gil`äð
יָבֵישׁ־גִּלעָד:ºº
and yet soº
they sufficedºº
them not.º |

21:14
And Binyamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Yavesh-Gilad: and yet so they sufficed them not. |
|
21:15
And the peopleº
repentedºº
themº
for
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִין,º
becauseº
that
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
had madeºº
a breachº
in the tribesº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל.º |
|
21:15
And the people repented them for Binyamin, because that Yahweh had made a breach in the tribes of Yisrael. |
|
21:16 ¶
Then the eldersº
of the congregationº
said,ºº
Howº
shall we doºº
for wivesº
for them that remain,ºº
seeingº
the womenº
are destroyedºº
out of
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִין?ºº |
|
21:16 ¶
Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Binyamin? |
|
21:17
And they said,ºº
[There must be] an inheritanceº
for them that be escapedº
of
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִין,º
that a tribeº
be notº
destroyedºº
out of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל.ºº |
|
21:17
And they said, [There must be] an inheritance for them that be escaped of Binyamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Yisrael. |
|
21:18
Howbeit weº
mayºº
notº
giveºº
them wivesº
of our daughters:ºº
forº
the childrenº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
have sworn,ºº
saying,ºº
Cursedºº
[be] he that givethºº
a wifeº
to
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִין.º |

21:18
Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Yisrael have sworn, saying, Cursed [be] he that giveth a wife to Binyamin. |
|
21:19
Then they said,ºº
Behold,º
[there is] a feastº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
in
Šîlò
שִׁילֹהº
yearlyºº
[in a place] whichº
[is] on the north sideºº
of
Bê± ´Ël
בֵּית־אֵל,ºº
on the east sideºº
of the highwayº
that goeth upºº
from
Bê± ´Ël
בֵּית־אֵלºº
to
Šæ¢em
שְׁכֶם,º
and on the southºº
of
Lævônà
לְבוֹנָה.º |

21:19
Then they said, Behold, [there is] a feast of Yahweh in Shiloh yearly [in a place] which [is] on the north side of Beth-El, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-El to Shekhem, and on the south of Levonah. |
|
21:20
Therefore they commandedººº
the childrenº
of
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִין,º
saying,ºº
Goººº
and lie in waitºº
in the vineyards;º |
|
21:20
Therefore they commanded the children of Binyamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards; |
|
21:21
And see,ºº
and, behold,º
ifº
the daughtersº
of
Šîlò
שִׁילֹהº
come outºº
to danceºº
in dances,º
then come ye outºº
ofº
the vineyards,º
and catchºº
you every manº
his wifeº
of the daughtersºº
of
Šîlò
שִׁילֹה,º
and goºº
to the landº
of
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִין.º |

21:21
And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Binyamin. |
|
21:22
And it shall be,º
whenº
their fathersº
orº
their brethrenº
comeºº
untoº
us to complain,ºº
that we will sayºº
untoº
them, Be favourableºº
unto them for our sakes: becauseº
we reservedºº
notº
to each manº
his wifeº
in the war:º
forº
yeº
did notº
giveºº
unto them at this time,º
[that] ye should be guilty.ºº |

21:22
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, [that] ye should be guilty. |
|
21:23
And the childrenº
of
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִיןº
didº
so,ººº
and tookºº
[them] wives,º
according to their number,º
ofº
them that danced,ºº
whomº
they caught:ºº
and they wentººº
and returnedºº
untoº
their inheritance,º
and repairedººº
the cities,º
and dweltºº
in them. |

21:23
And the children of Binyamin did so, and took [them] wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them. |
|
21:24
And the childrenº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
departedºº
thenceºº
at thatº
time,º
every manº
to his tribeº
and to his family,º
and they went outºº
from thenceºº
every manº
to his inheritance.º |
|
21:24
And the children of Yisrael departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance. |
|
21:25
In thoseº
daysº
[there was] noº
kingº
in
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל:º
every manº
didºº
[that which was] rightº
in his own eyes.º |
|
21:25
In those days [there was] no king in Yisrael: every man did [that which was] right in his own eyes. |
