1 Samuel 13

1 Saul's selected band. 3 He calleth the Hebrews to Gilgal against the Philistines, whose garrison Jonathan had smitten. 5 The Philistines' great host. 6 The distress of the Israelites. 8 Saul, weary of staying for Samuel, sacrificeth. 11 Samuel reproveth him. 17 The three spoiling bands of the Philistines. 19 The policy of the Philistines, to suffer no smith in Israel.

 13:1 Saul 7586 was [thirty] years 8141 old 1121 when he began to reign 4427a, and he reigned 4427a [forty] two 8147 years 8141 over 5921 Israel 3478.

 13:2 ¶ Now Saul 7586 chose 977 for himself 3,000 7969 505 men of Israel 3478, of which 2,000 505 were with Saul 7586 in Michmash 4363 and in the hill 2022 country 2022 of Bethel 1008, while 1,000 505 were with Jonathan 3083 at Gibeah 1390 of Benjamin 1144. But he sent 7971 away 7971 the rest 3499a of the people 5971a, each 376 to his tent 168.

 13:3 Jonathan 3083 smote 5221 the garrison 5333 of the Philistines 6430 that was in Geba 1387, and the Philistines 6430 heard 8085 of [it]. Then Saul 7586 blew 8628 the trumpet 7782 throughout 3605 the land 776, saying 559, “Let the Hebrews 5680 hear 8085.”

 13:4 All 3605 Israel 3478 heard 8085 the news 559 that Saul 7586 had smitten 5221 the garrison 5333 of the Philistines 6430, and also 1571 that Israel 3478 had become 887 odious 887 to the Philistines 6430. The people 5971a were then summoned 6817 to Saul 7586 at Gilgal 1537.

 13:5 ¶ Now the Philistines 6430 assembled 622 to fight 3898a with Israel 3478, 30,000 7970 505 chariots 7393 and 6,000 8337a 505 horsemen 6571b, and people 5971a like the sand 2344 which 834 is on the seashore 3220 8193 in abundance 7230; and they came 5927 up and camped 2583 in Michmash 4363, east 6926 of Beth-aven 1007b.

 13:6 When the men 376 of Israel 3478 saw 7200 that they were in a strait 6862b (for the people 5971a were hard-pressed 5065), then the people 5971a hid 2244 themselves in caves 4631, in thickets 2336, in cliffs 5553, in cellars 6877, and in pits 953a.

 13:7 Also [some of] the Hebrews 5680 crossed 5674a the Jordan 3383 into the land 776 of Gad 1410 and Gilead 1568. But as for Saul 7586, he [was] still 5750 in Gilgal 1537, and all 3605 the people 5971a followed 310 him trembling 2729.

 13:8 ¶ Now he waited 3176 seven 7651 days 3117, according to the appointed 4150 time 4150 set 834 by Samuel 8050, but Samuel 8050 did not come 935 to Gilgal 1537; and the people 5971a were scattering 6327a from him.

 13:9 So Saul 7586 said 559, “Bring 5066 to me the burnt 5930a offering 5930a and the peace 8002 offerings 8002.” And he offered 5927 the burnt 5930a offering 5930a.

 13:10 As soon as he finished 3615 offering 5927 the burnt 5930a offering 5930a, behold 2009, Samuel 8050 came 935; and Saul 7586 went 3318 out to meet 7122 him [and] to greet 1288 him.

 13:11 But Samuel 8050 said 559, “What 4100 have you done 6213a?” And Saul 7586 said 559, “Because 3588 I saw 7200 that the people 5971a were scattering 5310b from me, and that you did not come 935 within the appointed 4150 days 3117, and that the Philistines 6430 were assembling 622 at Michmash 4363,

 13:12 therefore I said 559, ‘Now 6258 the Philistines 6430 will come 3381 down 3381 against 413 me at Gilgal 1537, and I have not asked 2470b the favor 6440 of the LORD 3068.’ So I forced 662 myself and offered 5927 the burnt 5930a offering 5930a.”

 13:13 Samuel 8050 said 559 to Saul 7586, “You have acted 5528 foolishly 5528; you have not kept 8104 the commandment 4687 of the LORD 3068 your God 430, which 834 He commanded 6680 you, for now 6258 the LORD 3068 would have established 3559 your kingdom 4467 over 413 Israel 3478 forever 5704 5769.

 13:14 “But now 6258 your kingdom 4467 shall not endure 6965. The LORD 3068 has sought 1245 out for Himself a man 376 after His own heart 3824, and the LORD 3068 has appointed 6680 him as ruler 5057 over 5921 His people 5971a, because 3588 you have not kept 8104 what 834 the LORD 3068 commanded 6680 you.”

 13:15 ¶ Then Samuel 8050 arose 6965 and went 5927 up from Gilgal 1537 to Gibeah 1390 of Benjamin 1144. And Saul 7586 numbered 6485 the people 5971a who were present 4672 with him, about six 8337a hundred 3967 men 376.

 13:16 Now Saul 7586 and his son 1121 Jonathan 3083 and the people 5971a who were present 4672 with them were staying 3427 in Geba 1387 of Benjamin 1144 while the Philistines 6430 camped 2583 at Michmash 4363.

 13:17 And the raiders 7843 came 3318 from the camp 4264 of the Philistines 6430 in three 7969 companies 7218: one 259 company 7218 turned 6437 toward 413 1870 Ophrah 6084, to the land 776 of Shual 7777a,

 13:18 and another 259 company 7218 turned 6437 toward 1870 Beth-horon 1032, and another 259 company 7218 turned 6437 toward 1870 the border 1366 which overlooks 8259 5921 the valley 1516 of Zeboim 6650 toward the wilderness 4057b.

 13:19 ¶ Now no 3808 blacksmith 2796 could be found 4672 in all 3605 the land 776 of Israel 3478, for the Philistines 6430 said 559, “Otherwise 6435 the Hebrews 5680 will make 6213a swords 2719 or 176 spears 2595.”

 13:20 So all 3605 Israel 3478 went 3381 down 3381 to the Philistines 6430, each 376 to sharpen 3913 his plowshare 4281, his mattock 855a, his axe 7134, and his hoe 4281.

 13:21 The charge 6477 was two-thirds 6371a of a shekel for the plowshares 4281, the mattocks 855a, the forks 7969 7053, and the axes 7134, and to fix 5324 the hoes 1861a.

 13:22 So it came 1961 about on the day 3117 of battle 4421 that neither 3808 sword 2719 nor 3808 spear 2595 was found 4672 in the hands 3027 of any 3605 of the people 5971a who 834 [were] with Saul 7586 and Jonathan 3083, but they were found 4672 with Saul 7586 and his son 1121 Jonathan 3083.

 13:23 And the garrison 4673 of the Philistines 6430 went 3318 out to the pass 4569a of Michmash 4363.
