1 Samuel 4

1 The Israelites are overcome by the Philistines at Eben-ezer. 3 They fetch the Ark to the terror of the Philistines. 10 They are smitten again, the Ark taken, Hophni and Phinehas are slain. 12 Eli, at the news, falling backward, breaketh his neck. 19 Phinehas' wife, discouraged in her travail with Ichabod, dieth.

 4:1 Thus the word 1697 of Samuel 8050 came 1961 to all 3605 Israel 3478. Now Israel 3478 went 3318 out to meet 7122 the Philistines 6430 in battle 4421 and camped 2583 beside 5921 Ebenezer 72 while the Philistines 6430 camped 2583 in Aphek 663.

 4:2 The Philistines 6430 drew 6186a up in battle 6186a array to meet 7122 Israel 3478. When the battle 4421 spread 5203, Israel 3478 was defeated 5062 before 6440 the Philistines 6430 who killed 5221 about four 702 thousand 505 men 376 on the battlefield 4634 7704.

 4:3 When the people 5971a came 935 into the camp 4264, the elders 2205 of Israel 3478 said 559, “Why 4100 has the LORD 3068 defeated 5062 us today 3117 before 6440 the Philistines 6430? Let us take 3947 to ourselves from Shiloh 7887 the ark 727 of the covenant 1285 of the LORD 3068, that it may come 935 among 7130 us and deliver 3467 us from the power 3709 of our enemies 340.”

 4:4 So the people 5971a sent 7971 to Shiloh 7887, and from there 8033 they carried 5375 the ark 727 of the covenant 1285 of the LORD 3068 of hosts 6635 who sits 3427 [above] the cherubim 3742; and the two 8147 sons 1121 of Eli 5941, Hophni 2652 and Phinehas 6372, [were] there 8033 with the ark 727 of the covenant 1285 of God 430.

 4:5 ¶ As the ark 727 of the covenant 1285 of the LORD 3068 came 935 into the camp 4264, all 3605 Israel 3478 shouted 7321 with a great 1419 shout 8643, so that the earth 776 resounded 1949.

 4:6 When the Philistines 6430 heard 8085 the noise 6963 of the shout 8643, they said 559, “What 4100 [does] the noise 6963 of this 2088 great 1419 shout 8643 in the camp 4264 of the Hebrews 5680 [mean]?” Then they understood 3045 that the ark 727 of the LORD 3068 had come 935 into the camp 4264.

 4:7 The Philistines 6430 were afraid 3372a, for they said 559, “God 430 has come 935 into the camp 4264.” And they said 559, “Woe 188 to us! For nothing 3808 like this 2088 has happened 1961 before 8543 8032a.

 4:8 “Woe 188 to us! Who 4310 shall deliver 5337 us from the hand 3027 of these 428 mighty 117 gods 430? These 428 are the gods 430 who smote 5221 the Egyptians 4714 with all 3605 [kinds of] plagues 4347 in the wilderness 4057b.

 4:9 “Take 2388 courage 2388 and be men 376, O Philistines 6430, or 6435 you will become 5647 slaves 5647 to the Hebrews 5680, as they have been 5647 slaves 5647 to you; therefore, be men 376 and fight 3898a.”

 4:10 ¶ So the Philistines 6430 fought 3898a and Israel 3478 was defeated 5062, and every 376 man 376 fled 5127 to his tent 168; and the slaughter 4347 was very 3966 great 1419, for there fell 5307 of Israel 3478 thirty 7970 thousand 505 foot 7273 soldiers 7273.

 4:11 And the ark 727 of God 430 was taken 3947; and the two 8147 sons 1121 of Eli 5941, Hophni 2652 and Phinehas 6372, died 4191.

 4:12 ¶ Now a man 376 of Benjamin 1144 ran 7323 from the battle 4634 line 4634 and came 935 to Shiloh 7887 the same 1931 day 3117 with his clothes 4055 torn 7167 and dust 127 on his head 7218.

 4:13 When he came 935, behold 2009, Eli 5941 was sitting 3427 on [his] seat 3678 by the road 1870 eagerly watching 6822, because 3588 his heart 3820 was trembling 2730a for the ark 727 of God 430. So the man 376 came 935 to tell 5046 [it] in the city 5892b, and all 3605 the city 5892b cried 2199 out.

 4:14 When Eli 5941 heard 8085 the noise 6963 of the outcry 6818, he said 559, “What 4100 [does] the noise 6963 of this 2088 commotion 1995 [mean]?” Then the man 376 came 935 hurriedly 4116 and told 5046 Eli 5941.

 4:15 Now Eli 5941 was ninety-eight 8673 8083 years 8141 old 1121, and his eyes 5869 were set 6965 so that he could 3201 not see 7200.

 4:16 The man 376 said 559 to Eli 5941, “I am the one who came 935 from the battle 4634 line 4634. Indeed, I escaped 5127 from the battle 4634 line 4634 today 3117.” And he said 559, “How 4100 did things 1697 go 1961, my son 1121?”

 4:17 Then the one who brought 1319 the news 1319 replied 6030a, “Israel 3478 has fled 5127 before 6440 the Philistines 6430 and there has also 1571 been 1961 a great 1419 slaughter 4046 among the people 5971a, and your two 8147 sons 1121 also 1571, Hophni 2652 and Phinehas 6372, are dead 4191, and the ark 727 of God 430 has been taken 3947.”

 4:18 When he mentioned 2142 the ark 727 of God 430, Eli fell 5307 off 4480 5921 the seat 3678 backward 322 beside 5704 3027 the gate 8179, and his neck 4665 was broken 7665 and he died 4191, for he was old 2204 and heavy 3515. Thus he judged 8199 Israel 3478 forty 705 years 8141.

 4:19 ¶ Now his daughter-in-law 3618, Phinehas’s 6372 wife 802, was pregnant 2030 and about to give 3205 birth 3205; and when she heard 8085 the news 8052 that the ark 727 of God 430 was taken 3947 and that her father-in-law 2524 and her husband 376 had died 4191, she kneeled 3766 down 3766 and gave 3205 birth 3205, for her pains 6735c came 2015 upon her.

 4:20 And about the time 6256 of her death 4191 the women who stood 5324 by her said 1696 to her, “Do not be afraid 3372a, for you have given 3205 birth 3205 to a son 1121.” But she did not answer 6030a or pay 7896 attention 3820.

 4:21 And she called 7121 the boy 5288 Ichabod 350, saying 559, “The glory 3519b has departed 1540 from Israel 3478,” because 413 the ark 727 of God 430 was taken 3947 and because 413 of her father-in-law 2524 and her husband 376.

 4:22 She said 559, “The glory 3519b has departed 1540 from Israel 3478, for the ark 727 of God 430 was taken 3947.”
