1 Samuel 16

1 Samuel sent by God, under pretence of a sacrifice, cometh to Beth-lehem. 6 His human judgment is reproved. 13 He anointeth David. 19 Saul sendeth for David to quiet his evil spirit.

 16:1 Now the LORD 3068 said 559 to Samuel 8050, “How 4970 long 5704 will you grieve 56 over 413 Saul 7586, since I have rejected 3988a him from being 4427a king 4427a over 5921 Israel 3478? Fill 4390 your horn 7161 with oil 8081 and go 1980; I will send 7971 you to Jesse 3448 the Bethlehemite 1022, for I have selected 7200 a king 4428 for Myself among his sons 1121.”

 16:2 But Samuel 8050 said 559, “How 349 can I go 1980? When Saul 7586 hears 8085 [of it], he will kill 2026 me.” And the LORD 3068 said 559, “Take 3947 a heifer 5697 with you and say 559, ‘I have come 935 to sacrifice 2076 to the LORD 3068.’

 16:3 “You shall invite 7121 Jesse 3448 to the sacrifice 2077, and I will show 3045 you what 834 you shall do 6213a; and you shall anoint 4886 for Me the one whom 834 I designate 559 to you.”

 16:4 So Samuel 8050 did 6213a what 834 the LORD 3068 said 1696, and came 935 to Bethlehem 1035. And the elders 2205 of the city 5892b came 2729 trembling 2729 to meet 7122 him and said 559, “Do you come 935 in peace 7965?”

 16:5 He said 559, “In peace 7965; I have come 935 to sacrifice 2076 to the LORD 3068. Consecrate 6942 yourselves and come 935 with me to the sacrifice 2077.” He also consecrated 6942 Jesse 3448 and his sons 1121 and invited 7121 them to the sacrifice 2077.

 16:6 ¶ When they entered 935, he looked 7200 at Eliab 446 and thought 559, “Surely 389 the LORD’S 3068 anointed 4899 is before 5048 Him.”

 16:7 But the LORD 3068 said 559 to Samuel 8050, “Do not look 5027 at his appearance 4758 or at the height 6967 of his stature 6967, because 3588 I have rejected 3988a him; for God 430 [sees] not as man 120 sees 7200, for man 120 looks 7200 at the outward 5869 appearance 5869, but the LORD 3068 looks 7200 at the heart 3824.”

 16:8 Then Jesse 3448 called 7121 Abinadab 41 and made him pass 5674a before 6440 Samuel 8050. And he said 559, “The LORD 3068 has not chosen 977 this 2088 one 2088 either 1571.”

 16:9 Next Jesse 3448 made Shammah 8048 pass 5674a by. And he said 559, “The LORD 3068 has not chosen 977 this 2088 one 2088 either 1571.”

 16:10 Thus Jesse 3448 made seven 7651 of his sons 1121 pass 5674a before 6440 Samuel 8050. But Samuel 8050 said 559 to Jesse 3448, “The LORD 3068 has not chosen 977 these 428.”

 16:11 And Samuel 8050 said 559 to Jesse 3448, “Are these all 8552 the children 5288?” And he said 559, “There remains 7604 yet 5750 the youngest 6996a, and behold 2009, he is tending 7462a the sheep 6629.” Then Samuel 8050 said 559 to Jesse 3448, “Send 7971 and bring 3947 him; for we will not sit 5437 down until 5704 he comes 935 here 6311.”

 16:12 So he sent 7971 and brought 935 him in. Now he was ruddy 132, with beautiful 3303 eyes 5869 and a handsome 2896a appearance 7210. And the LORD 3068 said 559, “Arise 6965, anoint 4886 him; for this 2088 is he.”

 16:13 Then Samuel 8050 took 3947 the horn 7161 of oil 8081 and anointed 4886 him in the midst 7130 of his brothers 251; and the Spirit 7307 of the LORD 3068 came 6743a mightily 6743a upon David 1732 from that day 3117 forward 4605. And Samuel 8050 arose 6965 and went 1980 to Ramah 7414.

 16:14 ¶ Now the Spirit 7307 of the LORD 3068 departed 5493 from Saul 7586, and an evil 7451a spirit 7307 from the LORD 3068 terrorized 1204 him.

 16:15 Saul’s 7586 servants 5650 then said 559 to him, “Behold 2009 now 4994, an evil 7451a spirit 7307 from God 430 is terrorizing 1204 you.

 16:16 “Let our lord 113 now 4994 command 559 your servants 5650 who are before 6440 you. Let them seek 1245 a man 376 who is a skillful 3045 player 5059 on the harp 3658; and it shall come 1961 about when the evil 7451a spirit 7307 from God 430 is on you, that he shall play 5059 [the harp] with his hand 3027, and you will be well 2895.”

 16:17 So Saul 7586 said 559 to his servants 5650, “Provide 7200 for me now 4994 a man 376 who can play 5059 well 3190 and bring 935 [him] to me.”

 16:18 Then one 259 of the young 5288 men 5288 said 559, “Behold 2009, I have seen 7200 a son 1121 of Jesse 3448 the Bethlehemite 1022 who is a skillful 3045 musician 5059, a mighty 1368 man 1368 of valor 2428, a warrior 4421, one prudent 995 in speech 1697, and a handsome 8389 man 376; and the LORD 3068 is with him.”

 16:19 So Saul 7586 sent 7971 messengers 4397 to Jesse 3448 and said 559, “Send 7971 me your son 1121 David 1732 who 834 is with the flock 6629.”

 16:20 Jesse 3448 took 3947 a donkey 2543 [loaded with] bread 3899 and a jug 4997 of wine 3196 and a young 1423 goat 5795, and sent 7971 [them] to Saul 7586 by David 1732 his son 1121.

 16:21 Then David 1732 came 935 to Saul 7586 and attended 6440 him; and Saul loved 157 him greatly 3966, and he became 1961 his armor 3627 bearer 5375.

 16:22 Saul 7586 sent 7971 to Jesse 3448, saying 559, “Let David 1732 now 4994 stand 5975 before 6440 me, for he has found 4672 favor 2580 in my sight 5869.”

 16:23 So it came 1961 about whenever the [evil] spirit 7307 from God 430 came 1961 to Saul 7586, David 1732 would take 3947 the harp 3658 and play 5059 [it] with his hand 3027; and Saul 7586 would be refreshed 7304 and be well 2895, and the evil 7451a spirit 7307 would depart 5493 from him.
