Acts 22
1 Paul declareth at large, how he was converted to the faith, 17 and called to his apostleship. 22 At the very mentioning of the Gentiles, the people exclaim on him. 24 He should have been scourged, 25 but claiming the privilege of a Roman, he escapeth.
22:1
“Brethren 435 80 and fathers 3962, hear 191 my defense 627 which I now 3570 [offer] to you.”
22:2
¶ And when they heard 191 that he was addressing 4377 them in the Hebrew 1446 dialect 1258, they became 3930 even more 3123 quiet 2271; and he *said 5346,
22:3
¶ “I am 1510 a Jew 2453, born 1080 in Tarsus 5019 of Cilicia 2791, but brought 397 up in this 3778 city 4172, educated 3811 under 3844 3588 4228 Gamaliel 1059, strictly 195 according 2596 to the law 3551 of our fathers 3971, being 5225 zealous 2207 for God 2316 just 2531a as you all 3956 are today 4594.

“I persecuted 1377 this 3778 Way 3598 to the death 2288, binding 1195 and putting 3860 both 5037 men 435 and women 1135 into prisons 5438,

as also 2532 the high 749 priest 749 and all 3956 the Council 4244 of the elders 4244 can testify 3140. From them I also 2532 received 1209 letters 1992 to the brethren 80, and started 4198 off for Damascus 1154 in order to bring 71 even 2532 those 3588 who were there 1566 to Jerusalem 2419 as prisoners 1210 to be punished 5097.

¶ “But it happened 1096 that as I was on my way 4198, approaching 1448 Damascus 1154 about 4012 noontime 3314, a very 2425 bright 2425 light 5457 suddenly 1810 flashed 4015b from heaven 3772 all 4012 around 4012 me,

and I fell 4098 to the ground 1475 and heard 191 a voice 5456 saying 3004 to me, ‘Saul 4549, Saul 4549, why 5101 are you persecuting 1377 Me?’

“And I answered 611, ‘Who 5101 are You, Lord 2962?’ And He said 3004 to me, ‘I am 1510 Jesus 2424 the Nazarene 3480, whom 3739 you are persecuting 1377.’

“And those 3588 who 5101 were with me saw 2300 the light 5457, to be sure 3303a, but did not understand 191 the voice 5456 of the One who was speaking 2980 to me.

“And I said 3004, ‘What 5101 shall I do 4160, Lord 2962?’ And the Lord 2962 said 3004 to me, ‘Get 450 up and go 4198 on into Damascus 1154, and there 2546 you will be told 2980 of all 3956 that has been appointed 5021 for you to do 4160.’

“But since 5613 I could not see 1689 because 575 of the brightness 1391 of that light 5457, I was led 5496 by the hand 5496 by those 3588 who were with me and came 2064 into Damascus 1154.

¶ “A certain 5100 Ananias 367, a man 435 who was devout 2126 by the standard 3358 of the Law 3551, [and] well 3140 spoken 3140 of by all 3956 the Jews 2453 who lived 2730 there,

came 2064 to me, and standing 2186 near 2186 said 3004 to me, ‘Brother 80 Saul 4549, receive 308 your sight 308!’ And at that very 846 time 5610 I looked 308 up at him.

“And he said 3004, ‘The God 2316 of our fathers 3962 has appointed 4400 you to know 1097 His will 2307 and to see 3708 the Righteous 1342 One 1342 and to hear 191 an utterance 5456 from His mouth 4750.

‘For you will be a witness 3144 for Him to all 3956 men 444 of what 3739 you have seen 3708 and heard 191.
22:16
‘Now 3568 why 5101 do you delay 3195? Get 450 up and be baptized 907, and wash 628 away 628 your sins 266, calling 1941 on His name 3686.’

¶ “It happened 1096 when I returned 5290 to Jerusalem 2419 and was praying 4336 in the temple 2413, that I fell 1096 into a trance 1611,

and I saw 3708 Him saying 3004 to me, ‘Make 4692 haste 4692, and get 1831 out of Jerusalem 2419 quickly 5034, because 1360 they will not accept 3858 your testimony 3141 about 4012 Me.’

“And I said 3004, ‘Lord 2962, they themselves 846 understand 1987 that in one synagogue 4864 after 2596 another 2596 I used to imprison 5439 and beat 1194 those 3588 who believed 4100 in You.
22:20
‘And when 3753 the blood 129 of Your witness 3144 Stephen 4736 was being shed 1632b, I also 2532 was standing 2186 by approving 4909, and watching 5442 out for the coats 2440 of those 3588 who were slaying 337 him.’
22:21
“And He said 3004 to me, ‘Go 4198! For I will send 1821 you far 3112 away 1821 to the Gentiles 1484.’”

¶ They listened 191 to him up to this 3778 statement 3056, and [then] they raised 1869 their voices 5456 and said 3004, “Away 142 with such 5108 a fellow 5108 from the earth 1093, for he should 2520 not be allowed 2520 to live 2198!”

And as they were crying 2905 out and throwing 4496 off 4496 their cloaks 2440 and tossing 906 dust 2868 into the air 109,

the commander 5506 ordered 2753 him to be brought 1521 into the barracks 3925b, stating 3004 that he should be examined 426 by scourging 3148 so 2443 that he might find 1921 out the reason 156 why 1223 3739 they were shouting 2019 against him that way 3779.

But when 5613 they stretched 4385 him out with thongs 2438, Paul 3972 said 3004 to the centurion 1543 who was standing 2476 by, “Is it lawful 1832 for you to scourge 3147 a man 444 who is a Roman 4514 and uncondemned 178?”

When the centurion 1543 heard 191 [this], he went 4334 to the commander 5506 and told 518 him, saying 3004, “What 5101 are you about 3195 to do 4160? For this 3778 man 444 is a Roman 4514.”
22:27
The commander 5506 came 4334 and said 3004 to him, “Tell 3004 me, are you a Roman 4514?” And he said 5346, “Yes 3483a.”

The commander 5506 answered 611, “I acquired 2932 this 3778 citizenship 4174 with a large 4183 sum 2774 of money 2774.” And Paul 3972 said 5346, “But I was actually 2532 born 1080 [a citizen].”

Therefore 3767 those 3588 who were about 3195 to examine 426 him immediately 2112 let 868 go 868 of him; and the commander 5506 also 2532 was afraid 5399 when he found 1921 out that he was a Roman 4514, and because 3754 he had put 1210 him in chains 1210.

¶ But on the next 1887 day 1887, wishing 1014 to know 1097 for certain 804 why 5101 he had been accused 2723 by the Jews 2453, he released 3089 him and ordered 2753 the chief 749 priests 749 and all 3956 the Council 4892 to assemble 4905, and brought 2609 Paul 3972 down 2609 and set 2476 him before 1519 them.
