 4:1 ¶ Now it came to pass, when Sanballat{gr.Sanaballat} heard that we were building the wall, that it was grievous to him, and he was very angry, and railed against the Jews.

 4:1 ¶ But it came to pass,º that whenº Sanballatº heardºº thatº weº buildedººº the wall,º he was wroth,ºº and took greatºº indignation,ººº and mockedººº the Jews.º

 4:2 And he said before his brethren (that [is] the army of the Samaritans) [Is it true] that these Jews are building their city? do they indeed offer sacrifices? will they prevail? and will they this day restore the stones, after they have been burnt and made a heap of rubbish?

 4:2 And he spakeºº beforeº his brethrenº and the armyº of Samaria,º and said,ºº Whatº doºº these feebleº Jews?º will they fortifyºº themselves? will they sacrifice?ºº will they make an endºº in a day?º will they reviveººº the stonesº out of the heapsºº of the rubbishº whichº are burned?ºº

 4:3 And Tobiah{gr.Tobias} the Ammonite{gr.Ammanite} came near to him, and said to them, Do they sacrifice or eat in their place? shall not a fox go up and pull down their wall of stones?

 4:3 Now Tobiahº the Ammoniteº [was] byº him,º and he said,ºº Evenº that whichº theyº build,ºº ifº a foxº go up,ºº he shall even break downºº their stoneº wall.º

 4:4 Hear, O our God, for we have become a scorn; and return thou their reproach upon their head, and make them a scorn in a land of captivity,

 4:4 Hear,ºº O our Elohim;º forº we areº despised:º and turnºº their reproachº uponº their own head,º and giveºº them for a preyº in the landº of captivity:º

 4:5 and do not cover [their] iniquity.

 4:5 And coverººº notº their iniquity,º and let notº their sinº be blotted outºº from beforeºº thee: forº they have provoked [thee] to angerºº beforeº the builders.ºº

 4:6 So builtºº weº the wall;º and allº the wallº was joined togetherºº untoº the halfº thereof: for the peopleº hadº a mindº to work.ºº

 4:7 ¶ But it came to pass, when Sanballat{gr.Sanaballat} and Tobiah{gr.Tobia}, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites{gr.Ammanites}, heard that the building of the walls of Jerusalem was advancing, [and] that the breaches began to be stopped, that it appeared very grievous to them.

 4:7 ¶ But it came to pass,º [that] whenº Sanballat,º and Tobiah,º and the Arabians,º and the Ammonites,º and the Ashdodites,º heardºº thatº the wallsº of Jerusalemº were made up,ººº [and] thatº the breachesºº beganºº to be stopped,ºº then they were veryº wroth,ºº

 4:8 And all of them assembled together, to come to fight against Jerusalem, and to destroy it utterly.

 4:8 And conspiredºº allº of them togetherº to comeºº [and] to fightºº against Jerusalem,º and to hinderººº it.

 4:9 So we prayed to our God and set watchmen against them day and night, because of them.

 4:9 Nevertheless we made our prayerºº untoº our Elohim,º and setºº a watchº againstº them dayº and night,º becauseº ofºº them.

 4:10 And Judah{gr.Juda} said, The strength of the enemies is broken, yet [there is] much rubbish, and we shall not be able to build the wall.

 4:10 And Judahº said,ºº The strengthº of the bearers of burdensº is decayed,ºº and [there is] muchºº rubbish;º so that weº are notº ableºº to buildºº the wall.º

 4:11 And they that afflicted us said, They shall not know, and they shall not see, until we come into the midst of them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.

 4:11 And our adversariesº said,ºº They shall notº know,ºº neitherº see,ºº tillºº we comeºº inº the midstº amongº them, and slayºº them, and causeº the workº to cease.ºº

 4:12 And it came to pass, when the Jews who lived near them came, that they said to us, They are coming up against us from every quarter.

 4:12 And it came to pass,º that whenº the Jewsº which dweltºº byº themº came,ºº they saidºº unto us tenº times,º From allºº placesº whenceº ye shall returnºº untoº us [they will be upon you].

 4:13 ¶ So I set [men] in the lowest part of the place behind the wall in the lurking-places, I even set the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

 4:13 ¶ Therefore setºº I in the lowerºº placesº behindºº the wall,º [and] on the higher places,ººº I even setººº the peopleº after their familiesº withº their swords,º their spears,º and their bows.º

 4:14 And I looked, and arose, and said to the nobles, and to the captains, and to the rest of the people, Be not afraid of them: remember our great and terrible God, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

 4:14 And I looked,ºº and rose up,ºº and saidºº untoº the nobles,º and toº the rulers,º and toº the restº of the people,º Be notº ye afraidºº ofºº them:º rememberººº Yahweh,º [which is] greatº and terrible,ºº and fightºº forº your brethren,º your sons,º and your daughters,º your wives,º and your houses.º

 4:15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was made known to us, and God had frustrated their counsel, that we all returned to the wall, [every] man to his work.

 4:15 And it came to pass,º whenº our enemiesºº heardºº thatº it was knownºº unto us, and Elohimº had broughtºº their counselº to nought,ºººº that we returnedºº allº of us toº the wall,º every oneº untoº his work.º

 4:16 And it came to pass from that day [that] half of them that had been driven forth, wrought the work, and half of them kept guard; and [there were] spears, and shields, and bows, and breast-plates, and rulers behind the whole house of Judah{gr.Juda},

 4:16 And it came to passº fromº thatº timeº forth, [that] the halfº of my servantsº wroughtºº in the work,º and the other halfº of them heldºº both the spears,º the shields,º and the bows,º and the habergeons;º and the rulersº [were] behindº allº the houseº of Judah.º

 4:17 even of them that were building the wall:-- and those who carried the burdens [were] under arms: [each] with one hand wrought his work, and with the other held his dart.

 4:17 They which buildedºº on the wall,º and they that bareºº burdens,º with those that laded,ºº [every one] with oneº of his handsº wroughtºº in the work,º and with the otherº [hand] heldºº a weapon.º

 4:18 And the builders [wrought] each man having his sword girt upon his loins, and so they built: and the trumpeter with his trumpet next to him.

 4:18 For the builders,ºº every oneº had his swordº girdedºº byº his side,º and [so] builded.ºº And he that soundedºº the trumpetº [was] byº me.º

 4:19 ¶ And I said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work [is] great and abundant, and we are dispersed upon the wall, each at a great distance from his brother.

 4:19 ¶ And I saidºº untoº the nobles,º and toº the rulers,º and toº the restº of the people,º The workº [is] greatºº and large,º and weº are separatedºº uponº the wall,º oneº farº fromº another.ºº

 4:20 In whatsoever place ye shall hear the sound of the cornet, thither gather yourselves together to us; and our God shall fight for us.

 4:20 In whatº placeº [therefore] ye hearººº the soundº of the trumpet,º resortºº ye thitherº untoº us: our Elohimº shall fightºº for us.

 4:21 So we [continued] labouring at the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.

 4:21 So weº labouredºº in the work:º and halfº of them heldºº the spearsº from the risingººº of the morningº tillº the starsº appeared.ºº

 4:22 And at that time I said to the people, Lodge ye every man with his servant in the midst of Jerusalem, and let the night be a watch-time to you, and the day a work-time.

 4:22 Likewiseº at the sameº timeº saidºº I unto the people,º Let every oneº with his servantº lodgeºº withinº Jerusalem,º that in the nightº they may beº a guardº to us, and labourº on the day.º

 4:23 And I was [there], and the watchmen behind me, and there was not a man of us that put off his garments.

 4:23 So neitherº I,º nor my brethren,º nor my servants,º nor the menºº of the guardº whichº followedº me, noneº of usº put offºº our clothes,º [saving that] every oneº put them offºº for washing.º
