 2:1 ¶ Afterº theseº things,º when the wrathº of kingº ´Áçašwërôš אֲחַשׁוֵרוֹשׁº was appeased,ºº he rememberedººº Waštî וַשׁתִּי,º and whatº she had done,ºº and whatº was decreedºº againstº her.

 2:1 ¶ After these things, when the wrath of king Achashwerosh was appeased, he remembered Washti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.

 2:2 Then saidºº the king'sº servantsº that ministeredºº unto him, Let there be fairºº youngº virginsº soughtºº for the king:º

 2:2 Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:

 2:3 And let the kingº appointºº officersº in allº the provincesº of his kingdom,º that they may gather togetherººº allº the fairºº youngº virginsº untoº Šûšan שׁוּשַׁןº the palace,º toº the houseº of the women,º untoº the custodyº of Hëqe´ הֵגֶאº the king'sº chamberlain,º keeperºº of the women;º and let their things for purificationº be givenºº [them]:

 2:3 And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given [them]:

 2:4 And let the maidenº whichº pleasethººº the kingº be queenºº insteadº of Waštî וַשׁתִּי.º And the thingº pleasedººº the king;º and he didº so.ººº

 2:4 And let the maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Washti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.

 2:5 ¶ [Now] in Šûšan שׁוּשַׁןº the palaceº there wasº a certainº Yæhûðî יְהוּדִי,º whose nameº [was] Mordó¢ay מָרדֳּכַי,º the sonº of Yä´îr יָאִיר,º the sonº of Šim`î שִׁמעִי,º the sonº of Kîš קִישׁ,º a Benyæmînî בֶּניְמִינִי;º

 2:5 ¶ [Now] in Shushan the palace there was a certain Yehudi, whose name [was] Mordokhay, the son of Yair, the son of Shimi, the son of Qish, a Benyemini;

 2:6 Whoº had been carried awayºº from Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםºº withº the captivityº whichº had been carried awayºº withº Yæ¢onyà יְכָניָהº kingº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה,º whomº Nævû¢aðne´xxar נְבוּכַדנֶאצַּרº the kingº of Bävel בָּבֶלº had carried away.ºº

 2:6 Who had been carried away from Yerushalaim with the captivity which had been carried away with Yekhonyah king of Yehudah, whom Nevukhadnetztzar the king of Bavel had carried away.

 2:7 And he brought upºººº Háðassà הֲדַסָּה,º thatº [is], ´Estër אֶסתֵּר,º his uncle'sº daughter:º forº she had neitherº fatherº nor mother,º and the maidº [was] fairºº and beautiful;ºº whom Mordó¢ay מָרדֳּכַי,º when her fatherº and motherº were dead,º tookºº for his own daughter.º

 2:7 And he brought up Hadassah, that [is], Ester, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid [was] fair and beautiful; whom Mordokhay, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.

 2:8 ¶ So it came to pass,º when the king'sº commandmentº and his decreeº was heard,ºº and when manyº maidensº were gathered togetherºº untoº Šûšan שׁוּשַׁןº the palace,º toº the custodyº of Hëqay הֵגַי,º that ´Estër אֶסתֵּרº was broughtºº also untoº the king'sº house,º toº the custodyº of Hëqay הֵגַי,º keeperºº of the women.º

 2:8 ¶ So it came to pass, when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegay, that Ester was brought also unto the king's house, to the custody of Hegay, keeper of the women.

 2:9 And the maidenº pleasedººº him, and she obtainedºº kindnessº ofº him;º and he speedilyºº gaveºº herº her things for purification,º withº such things as belongedº to her, and sevenº maidens,º [which were] meetºº to be givenºº her, out of the king'sº house:ººº and he preferredºº her and her maidsº unto the bestº [place] of the houseº of the women.º

 2:9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, [which were] meet to be given her, out of the king's house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best [place] of the house of the women.

 2:10 ´Estër אֶסתֵּרº had notº shewedººº her peopleº nor her kindred:º forº Mordó¢ay מָרדֳּכַיº had chargedºº herº thatº she should notº shewºº [it].

 2:10 Ester had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordokhay had charged her that she should not shew [it].

 2:11 And Mordó¢ay מָרדֳּכַיº walkedºº every dayºº beforeº the courtº of the women'sº house,º to knowººº how ´Estër אֶסתֵּרº did,º and whatº should becomeºº of her.

 2:11 And Mordokhay walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know how Ester did, and what should become of her.

 2:12 ¶ Now when every maid'sº turnº was comeºº to go inºº toº kingº ´Áçašwërôš אֲחַשׁוֵרוֹשׁ,º afterº thatºº she had beenº twelveºº months,º according to the mannerº of the women,º (forº soº were the daysº of their purificationsº accomplished,ºº [to wit], sixº monthsº with oilº of myrrh,º and sixº monthsº with sweet odours,º and with [other] things for the purifyingº of the women;)º

 2:12 ¶ Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Achashwerosh, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, [to wit], six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with [other] things for the purifying of the women;)

 2:13 Then thusº cameºº [every] maidenº untoº the king;ºº whatsoeverºº she desiredºº was givenºº her to goºº withº her out of the houseºº of the womenº untoº the king'sº house.º

 2:13 Then thus came [every] maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king's house.

 2:14 In the eveningº sheº went,ºº and on the morrowº sheº returnedºº intoº the secondº houseº of the women,º toº the custodyº of Ša`ášqaz שַׁעֲשׁגַז,º the king'sº chamberlain,º which keptºº the concubines:º she came inºº untoº the kingº noº more,º exceptºº the kingº delightedºº in her, and that she were calledºº by name.º

 2:14 In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.

 2:15 ¶ Now when the turnº of ´Estër אֶסתֵּר,º the daughterº of ´Ávîçäyil אֲבִיחָיִלº the uncleº of Mordó¢ay מָרדֳּכַי,º whoº had takenºº her for his daughter,º was comeºº to go inºº untoº the king,º she requiredºº nothingºº butººº whatº Hëqay הֵגַיº the king'sº chamberlain,º the keeperºº of the women,º appointed.ºº And ´Estër אֶסתֵּרº obtainedººº favourº in the sightº of allº them that lookedºº upon her.

 2:15 ¶ Now when the turn of Ester, the daughter of Avichayil the uncle of Mordokhay, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegay the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Ester obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.

 2:16 So ´Estër אֶסתֵּרº was takenºº untoº kingº ´Áçašwërôš אֲחַשׁוֵרוֹשׁº intoº his houseº royalº in the tenthº month,º whichº [is] the monthº †ëvë± טֵבֵת,º in the seventhº yearº of his reign.º

 2:16 So Ester was taken unto king Achashwerosh into his house royal in the tenth month, which [is] the month Teveth, in the seventh year of his reign.

 2:17 And the kingº lovedººº ´Estër אֶסתֵּרº above allºº the women,º and she obtainedºº graceº and favourº in his sightº more than allºº the virgins;º so that he setºº the royalº crownº upon her head,º and made her queenºº insteadº of Waštî וַשׁתִּי.º

 2:17 And the king loved Ester above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Washti.

 2:18 Then the kingº madeºº a greatº feastº unto allº his princesº and his servants,º [even]º ´Estër's אֶסתֵּרº feast;º and he madeºº a releaseº to the provinces,º and gaveºº gifts,º according to the stateº of the king.º

 2:18 Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, [even] Ester's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.

 2:19 And when the virginsº were gathered togetherºº the second time,º then Mordó¢ay מָרדֳּכַיº satºº in the king'sº gate.º

 2:19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordokhay sat in the king's gate.

 2:20 ´Estër אֶסתֵּרº had notº [yet] shewedºº her kindredº nor her people;º asº Mordó¢ay מָרדֳּכַיº had chargedºº her:º for ´Estër אֶסתֵּרº didºº the commandmentº of Mordó¢ay מָרדֳּכַי,º like asº when she wasº brought upº withº him.

 2:20 Ester had not [yet] shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordokhay had charged her: for Ester did the commandment of Mordokhay, like as when she was brought up with him.

 2:21 ¶ In thoseº days,º while Mordó¢ay מָרדֳּכַיº satºº in the king'sº gate,º twoº of the king'sº chamberlains,º Biq±än בִּגתָןº and Tereš תֶּרֶשׁ,º of those which keptººº the door,º were wroth,ºº and soughtºº to layºº handº on the kingº ´Áçašwërôš אֲחַשׁוֵרוֹשׁ.º

 2:21 ¶ In those days, while Mordokhay sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hand on the king Achashwerosh.

 2:22 And the thingº was knownºº to Mordó¢ay מָרדֳּכַי,º who toldºº [it] unto ´Estër אֶסתֵּרº the queen;º and ´Estër אֶסתֵּרº certifiedºº the kingº [thereof] in Mordó¢ay's מָרדֳּכַיº name.º

 2:22 And the thing was known to Mordokhay, who told [it] unto Ester the queen; and Ester certified the king [thereof] in Mordokhay's name.

 2:23 And when inquisitionºº was madeº of the matter,º it was found out;ºº therefore they were bothº hangedºº onº a tree:º and it was writtenºº in the bookº of the chroniclesºº beforeº the king.º

 2:23 And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
