Joshua 9

1 The kings combine against Israel. 3 The Gibeonites by craft obtain a league. 22 For which they are condemned to perpetual bondage.

 9:1 Now it came 1961 about when all 3605 the kings 4428 who 834 were beyond 5676 the Jordan 3383, in the hill 2022 country 2022 and in the lowland 8219 and on all 3605 the coast 2348 of the Great 1419 Sea 3220 toward 413 4136 Lebanon 3844, the Hittite 2850 and the Amorite 567, the Canaanite 3669a, the Perizzite 6522, the Hivite 2340 and the Jebusite 2983, heard 8085 of it,

 9:2 that they gathered 6908 themselves together 3164a with one 259 accord 6310 to fight 3898a with Joshua 3091 and with Israel 3478.

 9:3 ¶ When the inhabitants 3427 of Gibeon 1391 heard 8085 what 834 Joshua 3091 had done 6213a to Jericho 3405 and to Ai 5857,

 9:4 they also 1571 acted 6213a craftily 6195 and set 1980 out as envoys 6737, and took 3947 worn-out 1087 sacks 8242 on their donkeys 2543, and wineskins 4997 worn-out 1087 and torn 1234 and mended 6887a,

 9:5 and worn-out 1087 and patched 2921 sandals 5275 on their feet 7272, and worn-out 1087 clothes 8008 on themselves; and all 3605 the bread 3899 of their provision 6718b was dry 3001 [and] had become 1961 crumbled 5350.

 9:6 They went 1980 to Joshua 3091 to the camp 4264 at Gilgal 1537 and said 559 to him and to the men 376 of Israel 3478, “We have come 935 from a far 7350 country 776; now 6258 therefore, make 3772 a covenant 1285 with us.”

 9:7 The men 376 of Israel 3478 said 559 to the Hivites 2340, “Perhaps 194 you are living 3427 within 7130 our land 7130; how 349 then shall we make 3772 a covenant 1285 with you?”

 9:8 But they said 559 to Joshua 3091, “We are your servants 5650.” Then Joshua 3091 said 559 to them, “Who 4310 are you and where 370 do you come 935 from?”

 9:9 They said 559 to him, “Your servants 5650 have come 935 from a very 3966 far 7350 country 776 because of the fame 8034 of the LORD 3068 your God 430; for we have heard 8085 the report 8089 of Him and all 3605 that He did 6213a in Egypt 4714,

 9:10 and all 3605 that He did 6213a to the two 8147 kings 4428 of the Amorites 567 who 834 were beyond 5676 the Jordan 3383, to Sihon 5511 king 4428 of Heshbon 2809 and to Og 5747 king 4428 of Bashan 1316 who 834 was at Ashtaroth 6252a.

 9:11 “So our elders 2205 and all 3605 the inhabitants 3427 of our country 776 spoke 559 to us, saying 559, ‘Take 3947 provisions 6720 in your hand 3027 for the journey 1870, and go 1980 to meet 7122 them and say 559 to them, “We are your servants 5650; now 6258 then, make 3772 a covenant 1285 with us.”’

 9:12 “This 2088 our bread 3899 [was] warm 2525 [when] we took 6719b it for our provisions 6719b out of our houses 1004 on the day 3117 that we left 3318 to come 1980 to you; but now 6258 behold 2009, it is dry 3001 and has become 1961 crumbled 5350.

 9:13 “These 428 wineskins 4997 which 834 we filled 4390 were new 2319, and behold 2009, they are torn 1234; and these 428 our clothes 8008 and our sandals 5275 are worn 1086 out because 4480 of the very 3966 long 7231 journey 1870.”

 9:14 So the men 376 [of Israel] took 3947 some 4480 of their provisions 6718b, and did not ask 7592 for the counsel 6310 of the LORD 3068.

 9:15 Joshua 3091 made 6213a peace 7965 with them and made 3772 a covenant 1285 with them, to let them live 2421a; and the leaders 5387a of the congregation 5712 swore 7650 [an oath] to them.

 9:16 ¶ It came 1961 about at the end 7097a of three 7969 days 3117 after 310 they had made 3772 a covenant 1285 with them, that they heard 8085 that they were neighbors 7138 and that they were living 3427 within 7130 their land 7130.

 9:17 Then the sons 1121 of Israel 3478 set 5265 out and came 935 to their cities 5892b on the third 7992 day 3117. Now their cities 5892b [were] Gibeon 1391 and Chephirah 3716a and Beeroth 881 and Kiriath-jearim 7157.

 9:18 The sons 1121 of Israel 3478 did not strike 5221 them because 3588 the leaders 5387a of the congregation 5712 had sworn 7650 to them by the LORD 3068 the God 430 of Israel 3478. And the whole 3605 congregation 5712 grumbled 3885b against 5921 the leaders 5387a.

 9:19 But all 3605 the leaders 5387a said 559 to the whole 3605 congregation 5712, “We have sworn 7650 to them by the LORD 3068, the God 430 of Israel 3478, and now 6258 we cannot 3201 3808 touch 5060 them.

 9:20 “This 2088 we will do 6213a to them, even let them live 2421a, so 3808 that wrath 7110a will not be upon us for the oath 7621 which 834 we swore 7650 to them.”

 9:21 The leaders 5387a said 559 to them, “Let them live 2421a.” So they became 1961 hewers 2404 of wood 2404 and drawers 7579 of water 4325 for the whole 3605 congregation 5712, just 3512c as the leaders 5387a had spoken 1696 to them.

 9:22 ¶ Then Joshua 3091 called 7121 for them and spoke 1696 to them, saying 559, “Why 4100 have you deceived 7411b us, saying 559, ‘We are very 3966 far 7350 from you,’ when you are living 3427 within 7130 our land 7130?

 9:23 “Now 6258 therefore, you are cursed 779, and you shall never 3808 cease 3772 being slaves 5650, both hewers 2404 of wood 2404 and drawers 7579 of water 4325 for the house 1004 of my God 430.”

 9:24 So they answered 6030a Joshua 3091 and said 559, “Because 3588 it was certainly 5046 told 5046 your servants 5650 that the LORD 3068 your God 430 had commanded 6680 His servant 5650 Moses 4872 to give 5414 you all 3605 the land 776, and to destroy 8045 all 3605 the inhabitants 3427 of the land 776 before 4480 6440 you; therefore we feared 3372a greatly 3966 for our lives 5315 because 4480 6440 of you, and have done 6213a this 2088 thing 1697.

 9:25 “Now 6258 behold 2009, we are in your hands 3027; do 6213a as it seems good 2896a and right 3477 in your sight 5869 to do 6213a to us.”

 9:26 Thus 3651 he did 6213a to them, and delivered 5337 them from the hands 3027 of the sons 1121 of Israel 3478, and they did not kill 2026 them.

 9:27 But Joshua 3091 made 5414 them that day 3117 hewers 2404 of wood 2404 and drawers 7579 of water 4325 for the congregation 5712 and for the altar 4196 of the LORD 3068, to this 2088 day 3117, in the place 4725 which 834 He would choose 977.
