 4:1 ¶ But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a bondservant though he is lord of all;

 4:1 ¶ Nowº I say,ºº [That] theº heir,º as long asººº heº isºº a child,º differethºº nothingº from a servant,º though he beºº lordº of all;º

 4:2 but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed of the father.

 4:2 Butº isºº underº tutorsº andº governorsº untilº theº time appointedº of theº father.º

 4:3 So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the rudiments of the world:

 4:3 Evenº soº we,º whenº we wereºº children,º wereºº in bondageºº underº theº elementsº of theº world:º

 4:4 but when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

 4:4 Butº whenº theº fulnessº of theº timeº was come,ºº Godº sent forthºº hisºº Son,º madeºº ofº a woman,º madeºº underº the law,º

 4:5 that he might redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

 4:5 Toº redeemºº themº that were underº the law,º thatº we might receiveºº theº adoption of sons.º

 4:6 And because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

 4:6 Andº becauseº ye areºº sons,º Godº hath sent forthºº theº Spiritº of hisºº Sonº intoº yourº hearts,º crying,ºº Abba,º Father.º

 4:7 So that thou art no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

 4:7 Whereforeº thou artºº no moreº a servant,º butº a son;º andº ifº a son,º thenº an heirº of Godº throughº Christ.º

 4:8 Howbeit at that time, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to them that by nature are no gods:

 4:8 Howbeitº then,ºº whenº ye knewºº notº God,º ye did serviceºº unto them which by natureº areºº noº gods.º

 4:9 but now that ye have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how turn ye back again to the weak and beggarly rudiments, whereunto ye desire to be in bondage over again?

 4:9 Butº now,º after that ye have knownºº God,º orº ratherº are knownºº ofº God,º howº turnº yeºº againº toº theº weakº andº beggarlyº elements,º whereuntoº yeº desireºº againºº to be in bondage?ºº

 4:10 Ye observe days, and months, and seasons, and years.

 4:10 Ye observeºº days,º andº months,º andº times,º andº years.º

 4:11 I am afraid of you, lest by any means I have bestowed labor upon you in vain.

 4:11 I am afraidºº of you,º lestºº I have bestowedºº uponº youº labourºººº in vain.º

 4:12 I beseech you, brethren, become as I [am], for I also [am become] as ye [are]. Ye did me no wrong:

 4:12 Brethren,º I beseechºº you,º beºº asº Iº [am]; forº Iº [am] asº yeº [are]: ye have not injuredºº meº at all.ººº

 4:13 but ye know that because of an infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you the first time:

 4:13 º Yeº knowºº howº throughº infirmityº of theº fleshº I preached the gospelºº unto youº at the first.º

 4:14 and that which was a temptation to you in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but ye received me as an angel of God, [even] as Christ Jesus.

 4:14 Andº myº temptationº whichº was inº myº fleshº ye despisedºº not,º norº rejected;ºº butº receivedºº meº asº an angelº of God,º [even] asº Christº Jesus.º

 4:15 Where then is that gratulation of yourselves? for I bear you witness, that, if possible, ye would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.

 4:15 Whereº isºº thenº theº blessednessºº yeº spake of? forº I bearºº youº record,ººº that,º ifº [it had been] possible,º ye would have plucked outººº yourº ownº eyes,º and have givenº themººº to me.º

 4:16 So then am I become your enemy, by telling you the truth?

 4:16 Am Iºº thereforeº becomeºº yourº enemy,º because I tellºº youº the truth?ººº

 4:17 They zealously seek you in no good way; nay, they desire to shut you out, that ye may seek them.

 4:17 They zealously affectºº you,º [but] notº well;º yea,º they wouldºº excludeºº you,º thatº ye might affectºº them.º

 4:18 But it is good to be zealously sought in a good matter at all times, and not only when I am present with you.

 4:18 Butº [it is] goodº to be zealously affectedºº alwaysº inº [a] goodº [thing], andº notº onlyº whenº Iº am presentºº withº you.º

 4:19 My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you --

 4:19 Myº little children,º of whomº I travail in birthºº againº untilºº Christº be formedºº inº you,º

 4:20 but I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone; for I am perplexed about you.

 4:20 º Iº desireºº to be presentºº withº youº now,º andº to changeºº myº voice;º forº I stand in doubtºº ofº you.º

 4:21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

 4:21 Tellºº me,º ye that desireºº to beºº underº the law,º do yeºº notº hearºº theº law?º

 4:22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the freewoman.

 4:22 Forº it is written,ºº thatº Abrahamº hadºº twoº sons,º the oneº byº a bondmaid,ºº theº otherº byº a freewoman.º

 4:23 Howbeit the [son] by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the [son] by the freewoman [is born] through promise.

 4:23 Butº heºº [who was] ofº theº bondwomanº was bornºº afterº the flesh;º butº heº ofº theº freewomanº [was] byº promise.º

 4:24 Which things contain an allegory: for these [women] are two covenants; one from mount Sinai, bearing children unto bondage, which is Hagar.

 4:24 Which thingsº areºº an allegory:ºº forº theseº areºº theº twoº covenants;º the oneºº fromº the mountº Sinai,º which genderethºº toº bondage,º whichº isºº Agar.º

 4:25 Now this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia and answereth to the Jerusalem that now is: for she is in bondage with her children.

 4:25 Forº this Agarº isºº mountº Sinaiº inº Arabia,º andº answerethºº toº Jerusalemº whichº nowº is,º andº is in bondageºº withº herºº children.º

 4:26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is our mother.

 4:26 Butº Jerusalemº which is aboveº isºº free,º whichº isºº the motherº of usº all.º

 4:27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; Break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: For more are the children of the desolate than of her that hath the husband.

 4:27 Forº it is written,ºº Rejoice,ºº [thou] barrenº that bearestºº not;º break forthºº andº cry,ºº thou that travailestºº not:º forº theº desolateº hathº manyº moreºº childrenº thanºº she which hathºº an husband.º

 4:28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

 4:28 Nowº we,º brethren,º asºº Isaacº was,º areºº the childrenº of promise.º

 4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him [that was born] after the Spirit, so also it is now.

 4:29 Butº asº thenº he that was bornºº afterº the fleshº persecutedºº himº [that was born] afterº the Spirit,º evenº soº [it is] now.º

 4:30 Howbeit what saith the scripture? Cast out the handmaid and her son: for the son of the handmaid shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman.

 4:30 Neverthelessº whatº saithºº theº scripture?º Cast outºº theº bondwomanº andº herº son:º forº theº sonº of theº bondwomanº shallºº notº be heirºº withºº theº sonº of theº freewoman.º

 4:31 Wherefore, brethren, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the freewoman.

 4:31 So then,º brethren,º we areºº notº childrenº of the bondwoman,º butº of theº free.º
