 12:1 ¶ And he began to speak unto them in parables. A man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and digged a pit for the winepress, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country.

 12:1 ¶ Andº he beganºº to speakºº unto themº byº parables.º A [certain] manº plantedºº a vineyard,º andº setºº an hedge aboutºº [it], andº diggedºº [a place for] the winefat,º andº builtºº a tower,º andº letºº itº outººº to husbandmen,º andº went into a far country.ºº

 12:2 And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruits of the vineyard.

 12:2 Andº at theº seasonº he sentºº toº theº husbandmenº a servant,º thatº he might receiveºº fromº theº husbandmenº ofº theº fruitº of theº vineyard.º

 12:3 And they took him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.

 12:3 Andº theyº caughtºº [him], and beatºº him,º andº sent [him] awayºº empty.º

 12:4 And again he sent unto them another servant; and him they wounded in the head, and handled shamefully.

 12:4 Andº againº he sentºº untoº themº anotherº servant;º and at himº they cast stones,ºº and wounded [him] in the head,ºº andº sent [him] awayºº shamefully handled.ºº

 12:5 And he sent another; and him they killed: and many others; beating some, and killing some.

 12:5 Andº againº he sentºº another;º and himº they killed,ºº andº manyºº others;ºº beatingº some,ºººº andº killingº some.ººº

 12:6 He had yet one, a beloved son: he sent him last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.

 12:6 Havingºº yetº thereforeº oneº son,º hisºº wellbeloved,º he sentºº himº alsoº lastº untoº them,º saying,ººº They will reverenceºº myº son.º

 12:7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.

 12:7 Butº thoseº husbandmenº saidºº amongº themselves,º Thisºº isºº theº heir;º come,ºº let us killºº him,º andº theº inheritanceº shall beºº ours.º

 12:8 And they took him, and killed him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard.

 12:8 Andº they tookºº him,º and killedºº [him], andº castºº [him] outº ofº theº vineyard.º

 12:9 What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.

 12:9 Whatº shallºº thereforeº theº lordº of theº vineyardº do?ºº he will comeºº andº destroyºº theº husbandmen,º andº will giveºº theº vineyardº unto others.º

 12:10 Have ye not read even this scripture: The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner;

 12:10 And have yeºº notº readºº thisº scripture;º The stoneº whichº theº buildersºº rejectedºº isººº becomeºº theº headº of the corner:º

 12:11 This was from the Lord, And it is marvellous in our eyes?

 12:11 Thisº wasºº the Lord'sº doing,ºººº andº it isºº marvellousº inº ourºº eyes?º

 12:12 And they sought to lay hold on him; and they feared the multitude; for they perceived that he spake the parable against them: and they left him, and went away.

 12:12 Andº they soughtºº to lay holdºº onº him,º butº fearedºº theº people:º forº they knewºº thatº he had spokenºº theº parableº againstº them:º andº they leftºº him,º and went their way.ºº

 12:13 ¶ And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they might catch him in talk.

 12:13 ¶ Andº they sendºº untoº himº certainº of theº Phariseesº andº of theº Herodians,º toº catchºº himº in [his] words.º

 12:14 And when they were come, they say unto him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest not for any one; for thou regardest not the person of men, but of a truth teachest the way of God: Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

 12:14 Andº when theyº were come,ºº they sayºº unto him,º Master,º we knowºº thatº thou artºº true,º andººº carestºººº forº no man:º forº thou regardestºº notº theº personºº of men,º butº teachestºº theº wayº of Godº inº truth:º Is it lawfulºº to giveºº tributeº to Caesar,º orº not?º

 12:15 Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why make ye trial of me? bring me a denarius, that I may see it.

 12:15 Shall we give,ºº orº shall we notº give?ºº Butº he,º knowingºº theirº hypocrisy,º saidºº unto them,º Whyº temptº yeºº me?º bringºº meº a penny,º thatº I may seeºº [it].

 12:16 And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's.

 12:16 Andº theyº broughtºº [it]. Andº he saithºº unto them,º Whoseº [is] thisº imageº andº superscription?º Andº theyº saidºº unto him,º Caesar's.º

 12:17 And Jesus said unto them, Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. And they marvelled greatly at him.

 12:17 Andº Jesusº answeringºº saidºº unto them,º Renderºº to Caesarº the thingsº that areº Caesar's,º andº to Godº the thingsº that areº God's.º Andº they marvelledºº atº him.º

 12:18 ¶ And there come unto him Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

 12:18 ¶ Thenº comeºº untoº himº the Sadducees,º whichº sayºº there isºº noº resurrection;º andº they askedºº him,º saying,ºº

 12:19 Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave a wife behind him, and leave no child, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

 12:19 Master,º Mosesº wroteºº unto us,º Ifºº a man'sº brotherº die,ºº andº leaveºº [his] wifeº [behind him], andº leaveºº noº children,º thatº hisºº brotherº should takeºº hisº wife,º andº raise upºº seedº unto hisº brother.º

 12:20 There were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed;

 12:20 Now there wereºº sevenº brethren:º andº theº firstº tookºº a wife,º andº dyingºº leftºº noº seed.º

 12:21 and the second took her, and died, leaving no seed behind him; and the third likewise:

 12:21 Andº theº secondº tookºº her,º andº died,ººº neitherº leftºº heº any seed:º andº theº thirdº likewise.º

 12:22 and the seven left no seed. Last of all the woman also died.

 12:22 Andº theº sevenº hadºº her,º andº leftºº noº seed:º lastº of allº theº womanº diedºº also.º

 12:23 In the resurrection whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.

 12:23 Inº theº resurrectionº therefore,º whenº they shall rise,ºº whoseº wifeº shall she beºº of them?º forº theº sevenº hadºº herº to wife.º

 12:24 Jesus said unto them, Is it not for this cause that ye err, that ye know not the scriptures, nor the power of God?

 12:24 Andº Jesusº answeringºº saidºº unto them,º Do yeºº notº thereforeºº err,ºº because ye knowºº notº theº scriptures,º neitherº theº powerº of God?º

 12:25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as angels in heaven.

 12:25 Forº whenº they shall riseºº fromº the dead,º they neitherº marry,ºº norº are given in marriage;ºº butº areºº asº the angelsº whichº are inº heaven.º

 12:26 But as touching the dead, that they are raised; have ye not read in the book of Moses, in [the place concerning] the Bush, how God spake unto him, saying, I [am] the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

 12:26 Andº as touchingº theº dead,º thatº they rise:ºº have yeºº notº readºº inº theº bookº of Moses,º howº inº theº bushº Godº spakeºº unto him,º saying,ºº Iº [am] theº Godº of Abraham,º andº theº Godº of Isaac,º andº theº Godº of Jacob?º

 12:27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living: ye do greatly err.

 12:27 He isºº notº theº Godº of the dead,º butº the Godº of the living:ºº yeº thereforeº doºº greatlyº err.ºº

 12:28 ¶ And one of the scribes came, and heard them questioning together, and knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, What commandment is the first of all?

 12:28 ¶ Andº oneº of theº scribesº came,ºº and having heardºº themº reasoning together,ºº and perceivingºº thatº he had answeredºº themº well,º askedºº him,º Whichº isºº the firstº commandmentº of all?º

 12:29 Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God, the Lord is one:

 12:29 Andº Jesusº answeredºº him,º Theº firstº of allº theº commandmentsº [is], Hear,ºº O Israel;º The Lordº ourº Godº isºº oneº Lord:º

 12:30 and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.

 12:30 Andº thou shalt loveºº the Lordº thyº Godº withº allº thyº heart,º andº withº allº thyº soul,º andº withº allº thyº mind,º andº withº allº thyº strength:º thisº [is] the firstº commandment.º

 12:31 The second is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

 12:31 Andº the secondº [is] like,º [namely] this,ººº Thou shalt loveºº thyº neighbourº asº thyself.º There isºº noneº otherº commandmentº greaterº than these.º

 12:32 And the scribe said unto him, Of a truth, Teacher, thou hast well said that he is one; and there is none other but he:

 12:32 Andº theº scribeº saidºº unto him,º Well,º Master,º thou hast saidºº theº truth:º forº there isºº oneº God;º andº there isºº noneº otherº butº he:º

 12:33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is much more than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices.

 12:33 Andº to loveºº himº withº allº theº heart,º andº withº allº theº understanding,º andº withº allº theº soul,º andº withº allº theº strength,º andº to loveºº [his] neighbourº asº himself,º isºº moreº than allº whole burnt offeringsº andº sacrifices.º

 12:34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

 12:34 Andº when Jesusº sawºº thatº heº answeredºº discreetly,º he saidºº unto him,º Thou artºº notº farº fromº theº kingdomº of God.º Andº no manº after thatº durstºº askºº himº [any question].

 12:35 ¶ And Jesus answered and said, as he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that the Christ is the son of David?

 12:35 ¶ Andº Jesusº answeredºº and said,ºº while he taughtºº inº theº temple,º Howº sayºº theº scribesº thatº Christº isºº the Sonº of David?º

 12:36 David himself said in the Holy Spirit, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet.

 12:36 Forº Davidº himselfº saidºº byº theº Holyº Ghost,º Theº LORDº saidºº to myº Lord,º Sitº thouºº onº myº right hand,º tillºº I makeºº thineº enemiesº thyº footstool.ººº

 12:37 David himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he his son? And the common people heard him gladly.

 12:37 Davidº thereforeº himselfº callethºº himº Lord;º andº whenceº isº heºº [then] hisº son?º Andº theº commonº peopleº heardºº himº gladly.º

 12:38 ¶ And in his teaching he said, Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and [to have] salutations in the marketplaces,

 12:38 ¶ Andº he saidºº unto themº inº hisºº doctrine,º Bewareºº ofº theº scribes,º whichº loveºº to goºº inº long clothing,º andº [love] salutationsº inº theº marketplaces,º

 12:39 and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at feasts:

 12:39 Andº the chief seatsº inº theº synagogues,º andº the uppermost roomsº atº feasts:º

 12:40 they that devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers; these shall receive greater condemnation.

 12:40 Which devourºº widows'º houses,º andº for a pretenceº makeºº longº prayers:ººº theseº shall receiveºº greaterº damnation.º

 12:41 ¶ And he sat down over against the treasury, and beheld how the multitude cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

 12:41 ¶ Andº Jesusº satºº over againstº theº treasury,º and beheldºº howº theº peopleº castºº moneyº intoº theº treasury:º andº manyº that were richº cast inºº much.º

 12:42 And there came a poor widow, and she cast in two mites, which make a farthing.

 12:42 Andº there cameºº a certainº poorº widow,º and she threw inºº twoº mites,º which makeº a farthing.º

 12:43 And he called unto him his disciples, and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, This poor widow cast in more than all they that are casting into the treasury:

 12:43 Andº he calledºº [unto him] hisºº disciples,º and saithºº unto them,º Verilyº I sayºº unto you,º Thatº thisº poorº widowº hath castºº moreº in,ººº than allº they which have castºº intoº theº treasury:º

 12:44 for they all did cast in of their superfluity; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, [even] all her living.

 12:44 Forº allº [they] did cast inºº ofº theirº abundance;ºº butº sheººº ofº herºº wantº did cast inºº allº thatº she had,ºº [even] allº herºº living.º
