 4:1 ¶ What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, hath found according to the flesh?

 4:1 ¶ Whatº shall we sayºº thenº that Abrahamº ourº father,º as pertainingº to the flesh,º hath found?ºº

 4:2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not toward God.

 4:2 Forº ifº Abrahamº were justifiedºº byº works,º he hathºº [whereof] to glory;º butº notº beforeº God.º

 4:3 For what saith the scripture? And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness.

 4:3 Forº whatº saithºº theº scripture?ºº Abrahamº believedºº God,º andº it was countedºº unto himº forº righteousness.º

 4:4 Now to him that worketh, the reward is not reckoned as of grace, but as of debt.

 4:4 Nowº to him that workethºº isºº theº rewardº notº reckonedºº ofº grace,º butº ofº debt.º

 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is reckoned for righteousness.

 4:5 Butº to him that workethºº not,º butº believethºº onº him that justifiethºº theº ungodly,º hisºº faithº is countedºº forº righteousness.º

 4:6 Even as David also pronounceth blessing upon the man, unto whom God reckoneth righteousness apart from works,

 4:6 Even asº Davidº alsoº describethºº theº blessednessº of theº man,º unto whomº Godº imputethºº righteousnessº withoutº works,º

 4:7 [saying], Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, And whose sins are covered.

 4:7 [Saying], Blessedº [are] they whoseº iniquitiesº are forgiven,ºº andº whoseº sinsº are covered.ºº

 4:8 Blessed is the man to whom, the Lord will not reckon sin.

 4:8 Blessedº [is] the manº to whomº the Lordº willºº notº imputeºº sin.º

 4:9 Is this blessing then pronounced upon the circumcision, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say, To Abraham his faith was reckoned for righteousness.

 4:9 [Cometh] thisº blessednessºº thenº uponº theº circumcisionº [only], orº uponº theº uncircumcisionº also?º forº we sayºº thatº faithº was reckonedºº to Abrahamº forº righteousness.º

 4:10 How then was it reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision:

 4:10 Howº was itºº thenº reckoned?ºº when he wasºº inº circumcision,º orº inº uncircumcision?º Notº inº circumcision,º butº inº uncircumcision.º

 4:11 and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision; that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might be reckoned unto them;

 4:11 Andº he receivedºº the signº of circumcision,º a sealº of theº righteousnessº of theº faithº whichº [he had yet] beingº uncircumcised:º thatººº heº might beºº the fatherº of allº them that believe,ºº thoughº they be not circumcised;ºº thatº righteousnessº might be imputedºº unto themº also:º

 4:12 and the father of circumcision to them who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham which he had in uncircumcision.

 4:12 Andº the fatherº of circumcisionº to themº who are notº ofº the circumcisionº only,º butº who alsoº walkººº in theº stepsº of that faithº of ourº fatherº Abraham,º which [he had] beingº [yet] uncircumcised.ºº

 4:13 For not through the law was the promise to Abraham or to his seed that he should be heir of the world, but through the righteousness of faith.

 4:13 Forº theº promise,º that heº should beºº theºº heirº of theº world,º [was] notº to Abraham,º orº to hisºº seed,º throughº the law,º butº throughº the righteousnessº of faith.º

 4:14 For if they that are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of none effect:

 4:14 Forº ifº theyº which are ofº the lawº [be] heirs,º faithº is made void,ºº andº theº promiseº made of none effect:ºº

 4:15 for the law worketh wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there transgression.

 4:15 Becauseº theº lawº workethºº wrath:º forº whereº noº lawº is,ºº [there is] noº transgression.º

 4:16 For this cause [it is] of faith, that [it may be] according to grace; to the end that the promise may be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all

 4:16 Thereforeºº [it is] ofº faith,º thatº [it might be] byº grace;º to the endº theº promiseº might beºº sureº to allº theº seed;º notº to thatº onlyº which is ofº theº law,º butº to thatº alsoº which is ofº the faithº of Abraham;º whoº isºº the fatherº of usº all,º

 4:17 (as it is written, A father of many nations have I made thee) before him whom he believed, [even] God, who giveth life to the dead, and calleth the things that are not, as though they were.

 4:17 (Asº it is written,ººº I have madeºº theeº a fatherº of manyº nations,)º beforeº him whomº he believed,ºº [even] God,º who quickenethºº theº dead,º andºº callethºº those things which beºº notº as thoughº they were.ºº

 4:18 Who in hope believed against hope, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, So shall thy seed be.

 4:18 Whoº againstº hopeº believedºº inº hope,º thatº heº might becomeºº the fatherº of manyº nations,º accordingº to that which was spoken,ºº Soº shallºº thyº seedº be.ºº

 4:19 And without being weakened in faith he considered his own body now as good as dead (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb;

 4:19 Andº being notº weakººº in faith,º he consideredºº notº his ownº bodyº nowº dead,ºº when he wasºº aboutº an hundred years old,º neitherº yetº theº deadnessº of Sara'sº womb:º

 4:20 yet, looking unto the promise of God, he wavered not through unbelief, but waxed strong through faith, giving glory to God,

 4:20 º Heº staggeredºº notº atº theº promiseº of Godº through unbelief;º butº was strongºº in faith,º givingºº gloryº to God;º

 4:21 and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

 4:21 Andº being fully persuadedºº that,º whatº he had promised,ºº he wasºº ableº alsoº to perform.ºº

 4:22 Wherefore also it was reckoned unto him for righteousness.

 4:22 Andº thereforeº it was imputedºº to himº forº righteousness.º

 4:23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was reckoned unto him;

 4:23 Nowº it wasºº notº writtenºº for his sakeºº alone,º thatº it was imputedºº to him;º

 4:24 but for our sake also, unto whom it shall be reckoned, who believe on him that raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,

 4:24 Butº forº usº also,º to whomº it shallº beºº imputed,ºº if weº believeºº onº him that raised upºº Jesusº ourº Lordº fromº the dead;º

 4:25 who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.

 4:25 Whoº was deliveredºº forº ourº offences,º andº was raised againºº forº ourº justification.º
