Then all the children of Yisrael went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beer-Sheva, with the land of Gilad, unto Yahweh in Mitzpah. |

in the assemblyº
of the peopleº

And the chief of all the people, [even] of all the tribes of Yisrael, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of Elohim, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword. |

(Now the children of Binyamin heard that the children of Yisrael were gone up to Mitzpah.) Then said the children of Yisrael, Tell [us], how was this wickedness? |

And the Lewi, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Givah that [belongeth] to Binyamin, I and my concubine, to lodge. |

uponº
me by night,º
[and] thoughtºº
to have slainºº
me: and my concubineº
have they forced,ºº

And the men of Givah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, [and] thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead. |

the countryº
of the inheritanceº

lewdnessº

And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Yisrael: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Yisrael. |

Behold,º

Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל;º
giveºº
hereº
your adviceº
and counsel.º |
|
20:7
Behold, ye [are] all children of Yisrael; give here your advice and counsel. |
|
20:8 ¶
And allº
the peopleº
aroseºº
as oneº
man,º
saying,ºº
We will notº
anyº
[of us] goººº
to his tent,º
neitherº
will we anyº
[of us] turnºº
into his house.º |

20:8 ¶
And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any [of us] go to his tent, neither will we any [of us] turn into his house. |

But nowº
thisº
[shall be] the thingº
whichº
we will doºº
to

[we will go up] by lotº
againstº
it; |

But now this [shall be] the thing which we will do to Givah; [we will go up] by lot against it; |

of a thousand,º
and a thousandº
out of ten thousand,º

And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Yisrael, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Givah of Binyamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Yisrael. |

Whatº
wickednessº
[is] thisº

And the tribes of Yisrael sent men through all the tribe of Binyamin, saying, What wickedness [is] this that is done among you? |

therefore deliverºº

the men,ºº
the childrenº

Bæliyya`al
בְּלִיַּעַל,º
whichº
[are] in
Giv`à
גִּבעָה,º
that we may put them to death,ºº
and put awayºº
evilº

But the childrenº

wouldºº

to the voiceº
of their brethrenº

Now therefore deliver [us] the men, the children of Beliyyaal, which [are] in Givah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Yisrael. But the children of Binyamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Yisrael: |

the citiesº

But the children of Binyamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Givah, to go out to battle against the children of Yisrael. |

And the childrenº

were numberedºº
at thatº
timeº
out of the citiesºº
twentyº
and sixº
thousandº
menº
that drewºº
sword,º
besideº
the inhabitantsººº
of

which were numberedºº

chosenººº

And the children of Binyamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Givah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men. |

´Ël
אֵל,ººº
and askedºº
counselº

´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִים,º
and said,ºº
Whichº
of us shall go upºº
firstº
to the battleº
againstº
the childrenº
of
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִין?º
And
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
said,ºº
Yæhûðà
יְהוּדָהº
[shall go up] first.º |

And the children of Yisrael arose, and went up to the house of El, and asked counsel of Elohim, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Binyamin? And Yahweh said, Yehudah [shall go up] first. |

And the childrenº

יִשׂרָאֵלº
rose upºº
in the morning,º
and encampedºº
againstº

גִּבעָה.º |

And the children of Yisrael rose up in the morning, and encamped against Givah. |

And the menº

to battleº
againstº

And the men of Yisrael went out to battle against Binyamin; and the men of Yisrael put themselves in array to fight against them at Givah. |

And the childrenº

and destroyed downºº
to the groundº
of the
Yi$ræ´ëlîm
יִשׂרְאֵלִיםº
thatº
dayº
twentyº

And the children of Binyamin came forth out of Givah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Yisreelim that day twenty and two thousand men. |

And the peopleº
the menº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
encouragedºº
themselves,º
and setº
their battleº
againºº
in arrayºº
in the placeº
whereºº
they put themselves in arrayºº
the firstº
day.º |

And the people the men of Yisrael encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day. |

(And the childrenº

and weptºº
beforeº
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
untilº
even,º
and askedºº
counselº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶה,º
saying,ºº
Shall I go upºº

the childrenº

my brother?º
And
Yähwè

(And the children of Yisrael went up and wept before Yahweh until even, and asked counsel of Yahweh, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Binyamin my brother? And Yahweh said, Go up against him.) |

came nearºº
againstº
the childrenº

Binyämîn

the secondº
day.º |

And the children of Yisrael came near against the children of Binyamin the second day. |

And

againstºº
them out ofº

the secondº
day,º
and destroyedº
downºº
to the groundº
of the childrenº

eighteenºº
thousandº
men;º

theseº

And Binyamin went forth against them out of Givah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Yisrael again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword. |

20:26 ¶

and allº
the people,º
went up,ºº
and cameºº
unto the houseº
of
´Ël
אֵל,ººº
and wept,ºº
and satºº
thereº
beforeº

thatº

untilº
even,º
and offeredºº
burnt offeringsº
and peace offeringsº

20:26 ¶
Then all the children of Yisrael, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of El, and wept, and sat there before Yahweh, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Yahweh. |

20:27
And the childrenº

Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
enquiredºº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶה,º
(for the arkº
of the covenantº
of
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִיםº
[was] thereº
in thoseº
days,º |

And the children of Yisrael enquired of Yahweh, (for the ark of the covenant of Elohim [was] there in those days, |

And

אַהֲרֹן,º
stoodºº
beforeº
it in thoseº

And Pinchas, the son of Elazar, the son of Aharon, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Binyamin my brother, or shall I cease? And Yahweh said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand. |

And the children of Yisrael went up against the children of Binyamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Givah, as at other times. |

the people,º
[and] were drawn awayºº
fromº
the city;º
and they beganºº
to smiteºº
of the people,ºº
[and] kill,º
as at other times,º
in the highways,º

and the otherº
to

in the field,º
about thirtyº

And the children of Binyamin went out against the people, [and] were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, [and] kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of El, and the other to Givah in the field, about thirty men of Yisrael. |

And the childrenº

said,ºº
Theyº
[are] smitten downºº
beforeº
us, as at the first.º
But the childrenº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
said,ºº
Let us flee,ºº
and drawºº
them fromº
the cityº
untoº
the highways.º |

And the children of Binyamin said, They [are] smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Yisrael said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways. |

out of their place,ºº
and put themselves in arrayºº
at
Ba`al Tämär
בַּעַל־תָּמָר:º
and the liers in waitºº

out of their places,ºº
[even] out of the meadowsºº

And all the men of Yisrael rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baal-Tamar: and the liers in wait of Yisrael came forth out of their places, [even] out of the meadows of Givah. |

And there cameºº

and the battleº
was sore:ºº

And there came against Givah ten thousand chosen men out of all Yisrael, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil [was] near them. |

And Yahweh smote Binyamin before Yisrael: and the children of Yisrael destroyed of the Benyeminim that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword. |

they were smitten:ºº
for the menº

So the children of Binyamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Yisrael gave place to the Benyeminim, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Givah. |

20:37
And the liers in waitºº
hasted,ºº
and rushedºº
uponº
Giv`à
גִּבעָה;º
and the liers in waitºº
drew [themselves] along,ºº
and smoteººº
allº
the cityº
with the edgeº
of the sword.º |

20:37
And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Givah; and the liers in wait drew [themselves] along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword. |
|
20:38
Now there wasº
an appointed signº
between the menº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
andº
the liers in wait,ºº
that they should make a greatºº
flameº
with smokeº
rise upºº
out ofº
the city.º |
|
20:38
Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Yisrael and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city. |
|
20:39
And when the menº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
retiredºº
in the battle,º
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִיןº
beganºº
to smiteºº
[and] killº
of the menº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
about thirtyº
persons:º
forº
they said,ºº
Surelyººº
theyº
are smitten downºº
beforeº
us, as [in] the firstº
battle.º |

20:39
And when the men of Yisrael retired in the battle, Binyamin began to smite [and] kill of the men of Yisrael about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as [in] the first battle. |
|
20:40
But when the flameº
beganºº
to arise upºº
out ofº
the cityº
with a pillarº
of smoke,º
the
Benyæmînîm
בֶּניְמִינִיםºº
lookedºº
behindº
them, and, behold,º
the flameº
of the cityº
ascended upºº
to heaven.º |

20:40
But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benyeminim looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven. |
|
20:41
And when the menº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
turned again,ºº
the menº
of
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִיןº
were amazed:ºº
forº
they sawºº
thatº
evilº
was comeºº
uponº
them. |
|
20:41
And when the men of Yisrael turned again, the men of Binyamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them. |
|
20:42
Therefore they turnedºº
[their backs] beforeº
the menº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
untoº
the wayº
of the wilderness;º
but the battleº
overtookºº
them; and them whichº
[came] out of the citiesºº
they destroyedºº
in the midstº
of them. |

20:42
Therefore they turned [their backs] before the men of Yisrael unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which [came] out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them. |
|
20:43
[Thus] they inclosedºº
the
Benyæmînîm
בֶּניְמִינִיםº
round about,ºººº
[and] chasedºº
them, [and] trode them downºº
with easeº
over againstºº

גִּבעָהº
toward the sunrising.ººº |

20:43
[Thus] they inclosed the Benyeminim round about, [and] chased them, [and] trode them down with ease over against Givah toward the sunrising. |

And there fellºº

thousandº
men;ºº

theseº
[were] menºº
of valour.º |

And there fell of Binyamin eighteen thousand men; all these [were] men of valour. |

toward the wildernessº

the rockº

and they gleanedºº
of them in the highwaysº
fiveº
thousandº
men;º
and pursuedºº

And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them. |

So that allº

בִּניָמִיןºº
wereº
twentyº
and fiveº
thousandº
menº
that drewºº
the sword;ºº
allº
theseº
[were] menºº
of valour.º |

So that all which fell that day of Binyamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these [were] men of valour. |

And the men of Yisrael turned again upon the children of Binyamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of [every] city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to. |
