And the men of Efrayim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midyanim? And they did chide with him sharply. |

them, Whatº
have I doneºº
nowº
in comparison of you? [Is] notº
the gleaningº
of the grapesº
of
´Efrayim
אֶפרַיִםº
betterº
than the vintageºº
of
´Ávî`ezer
אֲבִיעֶזֶר?º |

And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? [Is] not the gleaning of the grapes of Efrayim better than the vintage of Aviezer? |

Elohim hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midyan, Orev and Zeev: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that. |

[and] passed over,ºº
he,º

him, faint,º

And Gidon came to Yarden, [and] passed over, he, and the three hundred men that [were] with him, faint, yet pursuing [them]. |

I pray you,º

of breadº
unto the peopleº
thatº

me; forº

And he said unto the men of Sukkoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they [be] faint, and I am pursuing after Zevach and Tzalmunna, kings of Midyan. |

And the princesº

said,ºº
[Are] the handsº
of
Zevaç
זֶבַחº
and
Xalmunnä`
צַלמֻנָּעº
nowº
in thine hand,º
thatº
we should giveºº
breadº
unto thine army?º |

And the princes of Sukkoth said, [Are] the hands of Zevach and Tzalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army? |
|

And

Thereforeº
when
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
hath deliveredººº

and
Xalmunnä`
צַלמֻנָּעº
into mine hand,º
then I will tearººº
your fleshº

the thornsº
of the wildernessº
and withº
briers.º |

And Gidon said, Therefore when Yahweh hath delivered Zevach and Tzalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers. |
|

And he went upºº

And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Sukkoth had answered [him]. |

And he spakeºº

unto the menºº

saying,ºº
When I come againºº
in peace,º
I will break downººº
thisº
tower.º |

And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower. |
|
8:10 ¶
Now

and their hostsº
withº
them, about fifteenºº
thousandº
[men], allº
that were leftºº

Now Zevach and Tzalmunna [were] in Qarqor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand [men], all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword. |

8:11 ¶
And

went upºº
by the wayº
of them that dweltºº
in tentsº
on the eastºº

and smoteººº
the host:º
for the hostº

And Gidon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Novach and Yogbohah, and smote the host: for the host was secure. |

afterº
them, and tookººº

And when Zevach and Tzalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midyan, Zevach and Tzalmunna, and discomfited all the host. |

and the eldersº
thereof, [even] threescore and seventeenºº

And caught a young man of the men of Sukkoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Sukkoth, and the elders thereof, [even] threescore and seventeen men. |

And he cameºº

Beholdº

And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Sukkoth. |

And he beat downºº
the towerº
of
Pænû´ël
פְּנוּאֵל,º
and slewººº
the menºº
of the city.º |

8:17
And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city. |
|
8:18 ¶
Then saidºº
he untoº

Whatº
mannerº
of menºº
[were they] whomº
ye slewºº
at
Tävôr
תָּבוֹר?º
And they answered,ºº
As thouº
[art], so [were] they; each oneº

Then said he unto Zevach and Tzalmunna, What manner of men [were they] whom ye slew at Tavor? And they answered, As thou [art], so [were] they; each one resembled the children of a king. |
|
8:19
And he said,ºº
Theyº
[were] my brethren,º
[even] the sonsº
of my mother:º
[as]

liveth,º
ifº
ye had saved them alive,ººº
I would notº
slayºº
you. |

And he said, They [were] my brethren, [even] the sons of my mother: [as] Yahweh liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you. |

his firstborn,º
Up,ºº
[and] slayºº
them. But the youthº
drewºº

his sword:º
forº
he feared,ºº
becauseº
he [was] yetº
a youth.º |

And he said unto Yether his firstborn, Up, [and] slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he [was] yet a youth. |

Then Zevach and Tzalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man [is, so is] his strength. And Gidon arose, and slew Zevach and Tzalmunna, and took away the ornaments that [were] on their camels' necks. |

Then the men of Yisrael said unto Gidon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midyan. |

ruleºº
over you, neitherº
shall my sonº
ruleºº
over you:

And Gidon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: Yahweh shall rule over you. |

8:24 ¶
And

them, I would desireºº
a requestº
ofº
you, that ye would giveºº
me every manº
the earringsº
of his prey.º

8:24 ¶
And Gidon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they [were] Yishmeelim.) |
|
8:25
And they answered,ºº
We will willinglyºº
giveºº
[them]. And they spreadººº
a garment,º
and did castºº
thereinº
every manº
the earringsº
of his prey.º |
|
8:25
And they answered, We will willingly give [them]. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey. |
|
8:26
And the weightº
of the goldenº
earringsº
thatº
he requestedºº
wasº
a thousandº
and sevenº
hundredº
[shekels] of gold;º
besideºº
ornaments,º
and collars,º
and purpleº
raimentº
that [was] onºº
the kingsº
of
Miðyän

and besideºº
the chainsº
thatº
[were] about their camels'º
necks.º |

And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that [was] on the kings of Midyan, and beside the chains that [were] about their camels' necks. |

And Gidon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, [even] in Ofrah: and all Yisrael went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gidon, and to his house. |

8:28 ¶
Thus was

beforeº
the childrenº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל,º
so that they lifted upºº
their headsº
noº
more.ºº
And the countryº
was in quietnessºº
fortyº
yearsº
in the daysº

גִּדעוֹן.º |

8:28 ¶
Thus was Midyan subdued before the children of Yisrael, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gidon. |
|
8:29 ¶
And

wentººº
and dweltºº
in his own house.º |
|
8:29 ¶
And Yerubbaal the son of Yoash went and dwelt in his own house. |

of his bodyº
begotten:ºº

he hadº

wives.º |

And Gidon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives. |

And his concubine that [was] in Shekhem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Avimelekh. |

in a goodº
old age,º
and was buriedºº
in the sepulchreº

his father,º

8:32 ¶
And Gidon the son of Yoash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Yoash his father, in Ofrah of the Avi-Ezrim. |

And it came to pass,º
as soon asº

was dead,ºº
that the childrenº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
turned again,ºº
and went a whoringºº
afterº
Bæ`älîm
בְּעָלִים,º
and madeºº

בַּעַל־בְּרִיתº
their
´élöhîm
אֱלֹהִים.º |

And it came to pass, as soon as Gidon was dead, that the children of Yisrael turned again, and went a whoring after Bealim, and made Baal-Berith their elohim. |

And the childrenº

rememberedºº
notºº
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
their
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִים,º
who had deliveredººº
them out of the handsºº
of allº
their enemiesºº

And the children of Yisrael remembered not Yahweh their Elohim, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side: |

[namely],

the goodnessº

Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Yerubbaal, [namely], Gidon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Yisrael. |
