Proverbs 23

1 From this chapter to the five and twentieth are sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices.

 23:1 When 3588 you sit 3427 down 3427 to dine 3898b with a ruler 4910, Consider 995 carefully 995 what 834 is before 6440 you,

 23:2 And put 7760 a knife 7915 to your throat 3930 If 518 you are a man 1167 of [great] appetite 5315.

 23:3 Do not desire 183 his delicacies 4303, For it is deceptive 3577 food 3899.

 23:4 ¶ Do not weary 3021 yourself to gain 6238 wealth 6238, Cease 2308 from your consideration 998 [of it].

 23:5 When you set 5774a your eyes 5869 on it, it is gone 369. For [wealth] certainly 6213a makes 6213a itself wings 3671 Like an eagle 5404 that flies 5774a [toward] the heavens 8064.

 23:6 ¶ Do not eat 3898b the bread 3899 of a selfish 7451a 5869 man 7451a, Or desire 183 his delicacies 4303;

 23:7 For as he thinks 8176 within himself 5315, so 3651 he is. He says 559 to you, “Eat 398 and drink 8354!” But his heart 3820 is not with you.

 23:8 You will vomit 7006a up the morsel 6595 you have eaten 398, And waste 7843 your compliments 1697 5273a.

 23:9 ¶ Do not speak 1696 in the hearing 241 of a fool 3684, For he will despise 936 the wisdom 7922 of your words 4405.

 23:10 ¶ Do not move 5472 the ancient 5769 boundary 1366 Or go 935 into the fields 7704 of the fatherless 3490,

 23:11 For their Redeemer 1350 is strong 2389; He will plead 7378 their case 7379 against 854 you.

 23:12 Apply 935 your heart 3820 to discipline 4148 And your ears 241 to words 561 of knowledge 1847.

 23:13 ¶ Do not hold 4513 back 4513 discipline 4148 from the child 5288, Although 3588 you strike 5221 him with the rod 7626, he will not die 4191.

 23:14 You shall strike 5221 him with the rod 7626 And rescue 5337 his soul 5315 from Sheol 7585.

 23:15 ¶ My son 1121, if 518 your heart 3820 is wise 2449, My own heart 3820 also 1571 will be glad 8055;

 23:16 And my inmost 3629 being 3629 will rejoice 5937 When your lips 8193 speak 1696 what 4339 is right 4339.

 23:17 ¶ Do not let your heart 3820 envy 7065 sinners 2400, But [live] in the fear 3374 of the LORD 3068 always 3605 3117.

 23:18 Surely 3588 518 there 3426 is a future 319, And your hope 8615b will not be cut 3772 off 3772.

 23:19 Listen 8085, my son 1121, and be wise 2449, And direct 833 your heart 3820 in the way 1870.

 23:20 Do not be with heavy 5433a drinkers 5433a of wine 3196, [Or] with gluttonous 2151b eaters 2151b of meat 1320;

 23:21 For the heavy 5433a drinker 5433a and the glutton 2151b will come 3423 to poverty 3423, And drowsiness 5124 will clothe 3847 [one] with rags 7168.

 23:22 ¶ Listen 8085 to your father 1 who begot 3205 you, And do not despise 936 your mother 517 when 3588 she is old 2204.

 23:23 Buy 7069 truth 571, and do not sell 4376 [it], [Get] wisdom 2451 and instruction 4148 and understanding 998.

 23:24 ¶ The father 1 of the righteous 6662 will greatly 1524a rejoice 1523, And he who sires 3205 a wise 2450 son 2450 will be glad 8055 in him.

 23:25 Let your father 1 and your mother 517 be glad 8055, And let her rejoice 1523 who gave 3205 birth 3205 to you.

 23:26 ¶ Give 5414 me your heart 3820, my son 1121, And let your eyes 5869 delight 7521 in my ways 1870.

 23:27 For a harlot 2181 is a deep 6013 pit 7745 And an adulterous 5237 woman 5237 is a narrow 6862a well 875.

 23:28 Surely 637 she lurks 693 as a robber 2863, And increases 3254 the faithless 898 among men 120.

 23:29 ¶ Who 4310 has woe 190? Who 4310 has sorrow 17? Who 4310 has contentions 4066? Who 4310 has complaining 7879? Who 4310 has wounds 6482 without 2600 cause 2600? Who 4310 has redness 2448 of eyes 5869?

 23:30 Those who linger 309 long over 5921 wine 3196, Those who go 935 to taste 2713 mixed 4469 wine 4469.

 23:31 Do not look 7200 on the wine 3196 when 3588 it is red 119, When 3588 it sparkles 5414 5869 in the cup 3563a, When it goes 1980 down 1980 smoothly 4339;

 23:32 At the last 319 it bites 5391a like a serpent 5175 And stings 6567b like a viper 6848b.

 23:33 Your eyes 5869 will see 7200 strange 2114a things 2114a And your mind 3820 will utter 1696 perverse 8419 things 8419.

 23:34 And you will be like one who lies 7901 down 7901 in the middle 3820 of the sea 3220, Or like one who lies 7901 down 7901 on the top 7218 of a mast 2260a.

 23:35 “They struck 5221 me, [but] I did not become 2470a ill 2470a; They beat 1986 me, [but] I did not know 3045 [it]. When 4970 shall I awake 7019a? I will seek 1245 another 5750 3254 drink.”
