 9:1 ¶ Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor.

 9:1 ¶ Now there wasº a manº of Benjamin,ºº whose nameº [was] Kish,º the sonº of Abiel,º the sonº of Zeror,º the sonº of Bechorath,º the sonº of Aphiah,º a Benjamite,º a mightyº manºº of power.º

 9:2 And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a young man and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

 9:2 And he hadº a son,º whose nameº [was] Saul,º a choice young man,º and a goodly:º and [there was] notº among the childrenºº of Israelº a goodlierº personº thanº he: from his shouldersºº and upwardº [he was] higherº than anyºº of the people.º

 9:3 And the asses of Kish, Saul's father, were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.

 9:3 And the assesº of Kishº Saul'sº fatherº were lost.ºº And Kishº saidºº toº Saulº his son,º Takeºº nowºº oneº of the servantsºº withº thee, and arise,ºº goººº seekººº the asses.º

 9:4 And he passed through the hill-country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.

 9:4 And he passed throughºº mountº Ephraim,º and passed throughºº the landº of Shalisha,º but they foundºº [them] not:º then they passed throughºº the landº of Shalim,º and [there they were] not:º and he passed throughºº the landº of the Benjamites,º but they foundºº [them] not.º

 9:5 When they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return, lest my father leave off caring for the asses, and be anxious for us.

 9:5 [And] when theyº were comeºº to the landº of Zuph,º Saulº saidºº to his servantº thatº [was] withº him, Come,ººº and let us return;ºº lestº my fatherº leaveºº [caring] forº the asses,º and take thoughtºº for us.

 9:6 And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a man that is held in honor; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can tell us concerning our journey whereon we go.

 9:6 And he saidºº unto him, Beholdº now,º [there is] in thisº cityº a manº of God,º and [he is] an honourableºº man;º allº thatº he saithºº comethºº surely to pass:ºº nowº let us goººº thither;º peradventureº he can shewºº usº our wayº thatºº we should go.ºº

 9:7 Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?

 9:7 Then saidºº Saulº to his servant,º But, behold,º [if] we go,ººº whatº shall we bringºº the man?º forº the breadº is spentºº in our vessels,ºº and [there is] notº a presentº to bringºº to the manº of God:º whatº have we?

 9:8 And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.

 9:8 And the servantº answeredººº Saulº again,ºº and said,ºº Behold,º I haveºº hereº at handº the fourth partº of a shekelº of silver:º [that] will I giveºº to the manº of God,º to tellºº usº our way.º

 9:9 (Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he said, Come, and let us go to the seer; for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)

 9:9 (Beforetimeº in Israel,º when a manº wentººº to enquireºº of God,º thusº he spake,ºº Come,ººº and let us goººº toº the seer:ºº forº [he that is] nowº [called] a Prophetº was beforetimeº calledºº a Seer.)ºº

 9:10 Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.

 9:10 Then saidºº Saulº to his servant,º Wellº said;ººº come,ººº let us go.ººº So they wentººº untoº the cityº whereºº the manº of Godº [was].

 9:11 ¶ As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?

 9:11 ¶ [And] as theyº went upºº the hillº to the city,º theyº foundºº young maidensº going outºº to drawºº water,º and saidºº unto them, Isº the seerºº here?º

 9:12 And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, [he is] before thee: make haste now, for he is come to-day into the city; for the people have a sacrifice to-day in the high place:

 9:12 And they answeredºº them, and said,ºº He is;º behold,º [he is] beforeº you: make hasteºº now,º forº he cameºº to dayº to the city;º forº [there is] a sacrificeº of the peopleº to dayº in the high place:º

 9:13 as soon as ye are come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he goeth up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; [and] afterwards they eat that are bidden. Now therefore get you up; for at this time ye shall find him.

 9:13 As soon as ye be comeºº into the city,º ye shall straightwayº findºº him, beforeº he go upºº to the high placeº to eat:ºº forº the peopleº will notº eatºº untilº he come,ºº becauseº heº doth blessºº the sacrifice;º [and] afterwardsºº they eatºº that be bidden.ºº Nowº therefore get you up;ºº forº about this timeº ye shall findºº him.

 9:14 And they went up to the city; [and] as they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them, to go up to the high place.

 9:14 And they went upºº intoº the city:º [and] when theyº were comeºº intoº the city,º behold,º Samuelº came outºº againstºº them, for to go upºº to the high place.º

 9:15 ¶ Now Jehovah had revealed unto Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,

 9:15 ¶ Now the LORDº had toldºº Samuelº inº his earº aº dayº beforeº Saulº came,ºº saying,ºº

 9:16 To-morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be prince over my people Israel; and he shall save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.

 9:16 To morrowº about this timeº I will sendºº thee a manº out of the landºº of Benjamin,º and thou shalt anointºº him [to be] captainº overº my peopleº Israel,º that he may saveººº my peopleº out of the handºº of the Philistines:º forº I have lookedºº uponºº my people,º becauseº their cryº is comeºº unto me.º

 9:17 And when Samuel saw Saul, Jehovah said unto him, Behold, the man of whom I spake to thee! this same shall have authority over my people.

 9:17 And when Samuelº sawººº Saul,º the LORDº saidºº unto him, Beholdº the manº whomº I spakeºº toº thee of! this sameº shall reignºº over my people.º

 9:18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is.

 9:18 Then Saulº drew nearºº toº Samuelº inº the gate,º and said,ºº Tellºº me, I pray thee,º whereºº the seer'sºº houseº [is].

 9:19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer; go up before me unto the high place, for ye shall eat with me to-day: and in the morning I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thy heart.

 9:19 And Samuelº answeredººº Saul,º and said,ºº Iº [am] the seer:ºº go upºº beforeº me unto the high place;º for ye shall eatºº withº me to day,º and to morrowº I will let thee go,ºº and will tellºº thee allº thatº [is] in thine heart.º

 9:20 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not they mind on them; for they are found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for thee, and for all thy father's house?

 9:20 And as for thine assesº that were lostºº threeº daysº ago,º setºº notºº thy mindº on them; forº they are found.ºº And on whomº [is] allº the desireº of Israel?º [Is it] notº on thee, and on allº thy father'sº house?º

 9:21 And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou to me after this manner?

 9:21 And Saulº answeredºº and said,ºº [Am] notº Iº a Benjamite,º of the smallestºº of the tribesº of Israel?º and my familyº the leastº of allºº the familiesº of the tribeº of Benjamin?º whereforeº then speakestºº thou soºº toº me?

 9:22 And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the guest-chamber, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, who were about thirty persons.

 9:22 And Samuelº tookººº Saulº and his servant,º and broughtºº them into the parlour,º and made them sitºº in the chiefestº placeº among them that were bidden,ºº whichº [were] about thirtyº persons.º

 9:23 And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.

 9:23 And Samuelº saidºº unto the cook,º Bringººº the portionº whichº I gaveºº thee, of whichº I saidºº untoº thee, Setºº it byº thee.

 9:24 And the cook took up the thigh, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And [Samuel] said, Behold, that which hath been reserved! set it before thee and eat; because unto the appointed time hath it been kept for thee, for I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.

 9:24 And the cookº took upººº the shoulder,º and [that] which [was] uponº it, and setºº [it] beforeº Saul.º And [Samuel] said,ºº Beholdº that which is left!ºº setºº [it] beforeº thee, [and] eat:ºº forº unto this timeº hath it been keptºº for thee since I said,ºº I have invitedºº the people.º So Saulº did eatºº withº Samuelº thatº day.º

 9:25 ¶ And when they were come down from the high place into the city, he communed with Saul upon the housetop.

 9:25 ¶ And when they were come downºº from the high placeºº into the city,º [Samuel] communedºº withº Saulº uponº the top of the house.º

 9:26 And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

 9:26 And they arose early:ºº and it came to passº about the springºº of the day,º that Samuelº calledººº Saulº to the top of the house,º saying,ºº Up,ºº that I may send thee away.ºº And Saulº arose,ºº and they went outºº bothº of them, heº and Samuel,º abroad.º

 9:27 As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us (and he passed on), but stand thou still first, that I may cause thee to hear the word of God.

 9:27 [And] as theyº were going downºº to the endº of the city,º Samuelº saidºº toº Saul,º Bidºº the servantº pass onºº beforeº us, (and he passed on,)ºº but standºº thou stillºº a while,º that I may shewºº theeº the wordº of God.º
