 5:1 ¶ Then the prophets,º Çaggay חַגַּיº the prophet,º and Zæ¢aryà זְכַריָהº the sonº of `Iddô´ עִדּוֹא,º prophesiedºº untoº the Yæhûðäyë´ יְהוּדָיֵאº thatº [were] in Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº and Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº in the nameº of the ´Éläh אֱלָהº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º [even] untoº them.

 5:1 ¶ Then the prophets, Chaggay the prophet, and Zekharyah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Yehudaye that [were] in Yehudah and Yerushalaim in the name of the Elah of Yisrael, [even] unto them.

 5:2 Thenº rose upºº Zærubbävel זְרֻבָּבֶלº the sonº of Šæ´altî´ël שְׁאַלתִּיאֵל,º and Yëšûå` יֵשׁוּעַº the sonº of Yôxäðäk יוֹצָדָק,º and beganºº to buildºº the houseº of ´Éläh אֱלָהº whichº [is] at Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם:º and withº themº [were] the prophetsº ofº ´Éläh אֱלָהº helpingºº them.

 5:2 Then rose up Zerubbavel the son of Shealtiel, and Yeshua the son of Yotzadaq, and began to build the house of Elah which [is] at Yerushalaim: and with them [were] the prophets of Elah helping them.

 5:3 ¶ At the same timeº cameºº toº them Tattænay תַּתְּנַי,º governorº on this sideº the river,º and Šæ±ar Bôznay שְׁתַר־בּוֹזנַי,º and their companions,º and saidºº thusº unto them,º Whoº hath commandedººº you to buildºº thisº house,º and to make upºº thisº wall?º

 5:3 ¶ At the same time came to them Tattenay, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-Boznay, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?

 5:4 Thenº saidºº we unto them after this manner,º Whatº areº the namesº of the menº thatº makeºº thisº building?º

 5:4 Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?

 5:5 But the eyeº of their ´Éläh אֱלָהº wasºº uponº the eldersºº of the Yæhûðäyë´ יְהוּדָיֵא,º that they could notº causeºº themº to cease,ºº tillº the matterº cameºº to Däryäweš דָּריָוֶשׁ:º and thenº they returned answerºº by letterº concerningº thisº [matter].

 5:5 But the eye of their Elah was upon the elders of the Yehudaye, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Daryawesh: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this [matter].

 5:6 ¶ The copyº of the letterº thatº Tattænay תַּתְּנַי,º governorº on this sideº the river,º and Šæ±ar Bôznay שְׁתַר־בּוֹזנַי,º and his companionsº the ´Áfarsæ¢äyë´ אֲפַרסְכָיֵא,º whichº [were] on this sideº the river,º sentºº untoº Däryäweš דָּריָוֶשׁº the king:º

 5:6 ¶ The copy of the letter that Tattenay, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-Boznay, and his companions the Afarsekhaye, which [were] on this side the river, sent unto Daryawesh the king:

 5:7 They sentºº a letterº untoº him, whereinº was writtenºº thus;º Unto Däryäweš דָּריָוֶשׁº the king,º allº peace.º

 5:7 They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Daryawesh the king, all peace.

 5:8 Beº it knownºººº unto the king,º thatº we wentºº into the provinceº of Yæhûð יְהוּד,º to the houseº of the greatº ´Éläh אֱלָה,º whichº is buildedºº with greatº stones,º and timberº is laidºº in the walls,º and thisº workº goethºº fastº on,º and prosperethºº in their hands.º

 5:8 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Yehud, to the house of the great Elah, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.

 5:9 Thenº askedºº we thoseº elders,ºº [and] saidºº unto them thus,º Whoº commandedººº you to buildºº thisº house,º and to make upºº theseº walls?º

 5:9 Then asked we those elders, [and] said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?

 5:10 We askedºº their namesº also,º to certifyºº thee, thatº we might writeºº the namesº of the menº thatº [were] the chiefº of them.

 5:10 We asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that [were] the chief of them.

 5:11 And thusº they returnedºº us answer,º saying,ºº Weº areº the servantsº ofº the ´Éläh אֱלָהº of heavenº and earth,º and buildºº the houseº thatº wasºº buildedºº theseº manyº yearsº ago,ºº which a greatº kingº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº buildedºº and set up.ºº

 5:11 And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the Elah of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Yisrael builded and set up.

 5:12 Butº afterº thatº our fathersº had provokedºº the ´Éläh אֱלָהº of heavenº unto wrath,ºººº he gaveºº themº into the handº of Nævû¢aðne´xxar נְבוּכַדנֶאצַּרº the kingº of Bävel בָּבֶל,º the Casdäy כַּסדָּי,º who destroyedºº thisº house,º and carriedºº the peopleº awayººº into Bävel בָּבֶל.º

 5:12 But after that our fathers had provoked the Elah of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nevukhadnetztzar the king of Bavel, the Kasday, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Bavel.

 5:13 Butº in the firstº yearº of Côreš כּוֹרֶשׁº the kingº ofº Bävel בָּבֶלº [the same] kingº Côreš כּוֹרֶשׁº madeºº a decreeº to buildºº thisº houseº of ´Éläh אֱלָה.º

 5:13 But in the first year of Koresh the king of Bavel [the same] king Koresh made a decree to build this house of Elah.

 5:14 And the vesselsº alsoº ofº goldº and silverº ofº the houseº of ´Éläh אֱלָה,º whichº Nævû¢aðne´xxar נְבוּכַדנֶאצַּרº tookºº out ofº the templeº thatº [was] in Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם,º and broughtºº themº into the templeº ofº Bävel בָּבֶל,º thoseº did Côreš כּוֹרֶשׁº the kingº takeºº out ofº the templeº ofº Bävel בָּבֶל,º and they were deliveredºº unto [one], whose nameº [was] Šëšbaxxar שֵׁשׁבַּצַּר,º whomº he had madeºº governor;º

 5:14 And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of Elah, which Nevukhadnetztzar took out of the temple that [was] in Yerushalaim, and brought them into the temple of Bavel, those did Koresh the king take out of the temple of Bavel, and they were delivered unto [one], whose name [was] Sheshbatztzar, whom he had made governor;

 5:15 And saidºº unto him, Takeºº theseºº vessels,º go,ºº carryºº themº into the templeº thatº [is] in Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם,º and let the houseº of ´Éläh אֱלָהº be buildedºº inº his place.º

 5:15 And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that [is] in Yerushalaim, and let the house of Elah be builded in his place.

 5:16 Thenº cameºº the sameº Šëšbaxxar שֵׁשׁבַּצַּר,º [and] laidºº the foundationº ofº the houseº of ´Éläh אֱלָהº whichº [is] in Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם:º and sinceº that timeº even untilº nowº hath it been in building,ºº and [yet] it is notº finished.ºº

 5:16 Then came the same Sheshbatztzar, [and] laid the foundation of the house of Elah which [is] in Yerushalaim: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and [yet] it is not finished.

 5:17 Nowº therefore, ifº [it seem] goodº toº the king,º let there be searchºº madeº in the king'sº treasureº house,º whichº [is] thereº at Bävel בָּבֶל,º whetherº it beº [so], thatº a decreeº was madeºº ofº Côreš כּוֹרֶשׁº the kingº to buildºº thisº houseº of ´Éläh אֱלָהº at Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם,º and let the kingº sendºº his pleasureº toº us concerningº this matter.º

 5:17 Now therefore, if [it seem] good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure house, which [is] there at Bavel, whether it be [so], that a decree was made of Koresh the king to build this house of Elah at Yerushalaim, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
