Genesis 38

1 Judah begetteth Er, Onan, and Shelah. 6 Er marrieth Tamar. 8 The trespass of Onan. 11 Tamar stayeth for Shelah. 13 She deceiveth Judah. 27 She beareth twins, Pharez and Zarah.

 38:1 And it came 1961 about at that time 6256, that Judah 3063 departed 3381 from his brothers 251 and visited 5186 a certain 376 Adullamite 5726, whose name 8034 was Hirah 2437.

 38:2 Judah 3063 saw 7200 there 8033 a daughter 1323 of a certain 376 Canaanite 3669a whose name 8034 was Shua 7770a; and he took 3947 her and went 935 in to her.

 38:3 So she conceived 2029 and bore 3205 a son 1121 and he named 7121 8034 him Er 6147.

 38:4 Then she conceived 2029 again 5750 and bore 3205 a son 1121 and named 7121 8034 him Onan 209.

 38:5 She bore 3205 still 5750 another 3254 son 1121 and named 7121 8034 him Shelah 7956; and it was at Chezib 3580 that she bore 3205 him.

 38:6 ¶ Now Judah 3063 took 3947 a wife 802 for Er 6147 his firstborn 1060, and her name 8034 [was] Tamar 8559.

 38:7 But Er 6147, Judah’s 3063 firstborn 1060, was evil 7451a in the sight 5869 of the LORD 3068, so the LORD 3068 took 4191 his life 4191.

 38:8 Then Judah 3063 said 559 to Onan 209, “Go 935 in to your brother’s 251 wife 802, and perform 2992 your duty 2992 as a brother-in-law 2992 to her, and raise 6965 up offspring 2233 for your brother 251.”

 38:9 Onan 209 knew 3045 that the offspring 2233 would not be his; so when 518 he went 935 in to his brother’s 251 wife 802, he wasted 7843 his seed on the ground 776 in order not to give 5414 offspring 2233 to his brother 251.

 38:10 But what 834 he did 6213a was displeasing 7489a in the sight 5869 of the LORD 3068; so He took 4191 his life 4191 also 1571.

 38:11 Then Judah 3063 said 559 to his daughter-in-law 3618 Tamar 8559, “Remain 3427 a widow 490 in your father’s 1 house 1004 until 5704 my son 1121 Shelah 7956 grows 1431 up”; for he thought 559, “[I am afraid] that he too 1571 may die 4191 like his brothers 251.” So Tamar 8559 went 1980 and lived 3427 in her father’s 1 house 1004.

 38:12 ¶ Now after a considerable 7235a time 3117 Shua’s 7770a daughter 1323, the wife 802 of Judah 3063, died 4191; and when the time 5162 of mourning 5162 was ended 5162, Judah 3063 went 5927 up to his sheepshearers 6629 1494 at Timnah 8553, he and his friend 7453 Hirah 2437 the Adullamite 5726.

 38:18 He said 559, “What 4100 pledge 6162 shall I give 5414 you?” And she said 559, “Your seal 2368 and your cord 6616, and your staff 4294 that is in your hand 3027.” So he gave 5414 [them] to her and went 935 in to her, and she conceived 2029 by him.

 38:19 Then she arose 6965 and departed 1980, and removed 5493 her veil 6809 and put 3847 on her widow’s 491 garments 899b.

 38:20 ¶ When Judah 3063 sent 7971 the young 1423 5795 goat 1423 5795 by his friend 7453 the Adullamite 5726, to receive 3947 the pledge 6162 from the woman’s 802 hand 3027, he did not find 4672 her.

 38:21 He asked 7592 the men 376 of her place 4725, saying 559, “Where 346 is the temple 6945 prostitute 6945 who 1931 was by the road 1870 at Enaim 5879a?” But they said 559, “There has been 1961 no 3808 temple 6945 prostitute 6945 here 2088.”

 38:22 So he returned 7725 to Judah 3063, and said 559, “I did not find 4672 her; and furthermore 1571, the men 376 of the place 4725 said 559, ‘There has been 1961 no 3808 temple 6945 prostitute 6945 here 2088.’”

 38:23 Then Judah 3063 said 559, “Let her keep 3947 them, otherwise 6435 we will become 1961 a laughingstock 937. After 2009 all 2009, I sent 7971 this 2088 young 1423 goat 1423, but you did not find 4672 her.”

 38:24 ¶ Now it was about three 7969 months 2320 later that Judah 3063 was informed 5046, “Your daughter-in-law 3618 Tamar 8559 has played 2181 the harlot 2181, and behold 2009, she is also 1571 with child 2030 by harlotry 2183.” Then Judah 3063 said 559, “Bring 3318 her out and let her be burned 8313!”

 38:26 Judah 3063 recognized 5234 [them], and said 559, “She is more 4480 righteous 6663 than 4480 I, inasmuch 3588 5921 3651 as I did not give 5414 her to my son 1121 Shelah 7956.” And he did not have 3045 relations 3045 with her again 3254 5750.

 38:27 ¶ It came 1961 about at the time 6256 she was giving 3205 birth 3205, that behold 2009, there were twins 8420b in her womb 990.

 38:30 Afterward 310 his brother 251 came 3318 out who 834 had the scarlet 8144 [thread] on his hand 3027; and he was named 7121 8034 Zerah 2226.
