Genesis 44

1 Joseph's policy to stay his brethren. 14 Judah's humble supplication to Joseph.

 44:1 Then he commanded 6680 his house 1004 steward 834 5921, saying 559, “Fill 4390 the men’s 376 sacks 572 with food 400, as much 3512c as they can 3201 carry 5375, and put 7760 each 376 man’s 376 money 3701 in the mouth 6310 of his sack 572.

 44:2 “Put 7760 my cup 1375, the silver 3701 cup 1375, in the mouth 6310 of the sack 572 of the youngest 6996b, and his money 3701 for the grain 7668.” And he did 6213a as Joseph 3130 had told 1696 [him].

 44:3 As soon 1242 as it was light 215, the men 376 were sent 7971 away 7971, they with their donkeys 2543.

 44:4 They had [just] gone 3318 out of the city 5892b, [and] were not far 7368 off, when Joseph 3130 said 559 to his house 1004 steward 834 5921, “Up, follow 7291 310 the men 376; and when you overtake 5381 them, say 559 to them, ‘Why 4100 have you repaid 7999a evil 7463a for good 2899b?

 44:5 ‘Is not this 2088 the one from which 834 my lord 113 drinks 8354 and which he indeed 5172 uses 5172 for divination 5172? You have done 7489a wrong 7489a in doing 6213a this 834.’”

 44:6 ¶ So he overtook 5381 them and spoke 1696 these 428 words 1697 to them.

 44:7 They said 559 to him, “Why 4100 does my lord 113 speak 1696 such words 1697 as these 428? Far 2486 be it from your servants 5650 to do 6213a such 2088 a thing 1697.

 44:8 “Behold 2005, the money 3701 which 834 we found 4672 in the mouth 6310 of our sacks 572 we have brought 7725 back 7725 to you from the land 776 of Canaan 3667a. How 349 then could we steal 1589 silver 3701 or 176 gold 2091 from your lord’s 113 house 1004?

 44:9 “With whomever 834 of your servants 5650 it is found 4672, let him die 4191, and we also 1571 will be my lord’s 113 slaves 5650.”

 44:10 So he said 559, “Now 6258 let it also 1571 be according to your words 1697; he with whom 834 it is found 4672 shall be my slave 5650, and [the rest of] you shall be innocent 5355a.”

 44:11 Then they hurried 4116, each 376 man 376 lowered 3381 his sack 572 to the ground 776, and each 376 man 376 opened 6605a his sack 572.

 44:12 He searched 2664, beginning 2490c with the oldest 1419 and ending 3615 with the youngest 6996b, and the cup 1375 was found 4672 in Benjamin’s 1144 sack 572.

 44:13 Then they tore 7167 their clothes 8071, and when each 376 man 376 loaded 6006 his donkey 2543, they returned 7725 to the city 5892b.

 44:14 ¶ When Judah 3063 and his brothers 251 came 935 to Joseph’s 3130 house 1004, he was still 5750 there 8033, and they fell 5307 to the ground 776 before 6440 him.

 44:15 Joseph 3130 said 559 to them, “What 4100 is this 2088 deed 4639 that you have done 6213a? Do you not know 3045 that such 3644 a man 376 as I can indeed 5172 practice 5172 divination 5172?”

 44:16 So Judah 3063 said 559, “What 4100 can we say 559 to my lord 113? What 4100 can we speak 1696? And how 4100 can we justify 6663 ourselves? God 430 has found 4672 out the iniquity 5771 of your servants 5650; behold 2009, we are my lord’s 113 slaves 5650, both 1571 we and the one in whose 834 possession 3027 the cup 1375 has been found 4672.”

 44:17 But he said 559, “Far 2486 be it from me to do 6213a this 2088. The man 376 in whose 834 possession 3027 the cup 1375 has been found 4672, he shall be my slave 5650; but as for you, go 5927 up in peace 7965 to your father 1.”

 44:18 ¶ Then Judah 3063 approached 5066 him, and said 559, “Oh 994a my lord 113, may your servant 5650 please 4994 speak 1696 a word 1697 in my lord’s 113 ears 241, and do not be angry 639 2734 with your servant 5650; for you are equal to Pharaoh 6547.

 44:19 “My lord 113 asked 7592 his servants 5650, saying 559, ‘Have 3426 you a father 1 or 176 a brother 251?’

 44:20 “We said 559 to my lord 113, ‘We have 3426 an old 2205 father 1 and a little 6996a child 3206 of [his] old 2208 age 2208. Now his brother 251 is dead 4191, so he alone 905 is left 3498 of his mother 517, and his father 1 loves 157 him.’

 44:21 “Then you said 559 to your servants 5650, ‘Bring 3381 him down 3381 to me that I may set 7760 my eyes 5869 on him.’

 44:22 “But we said 559 to my lord 113, ‘The lad 5288 cannot 3201 3808 leave 5800a his father 1, for if he should leave 5800a his father 1, his father would die 4191.’

 44:23 “You said 559 to your servants 5650, however, ‘Unless 518 3808 your youngest 6996b brother 251 comes 3381 down 3381 with you, you will not see 7200 my face 6440 again 3254.’

 44:24 “Thus it came 1961 about when 3588 we went 5927 up to your servant 5650 my father 1, we told 5046 him the words 1697 of my lord 113.

 44:25 “Our father 1 said 559, ‘Go 7725 back 7725, buy 7666 us a little 4592 food 400.’

 44:26 “But we said 559, ‘We cannot 3201 3808 go 3381 down 3381. If 518 our youngest 6996b brother 251 is with us, then we will go 3381 down 3381; for we cannot 3201 3808 see 7200 the man’s 376 face 6440 unless 369 our youngest 6996b brother 251 is with us.’

 44:27 “Your servant 5650 my father 1 said 559 to us, ‘You know 3045 that my wife 802 bore 3205 me two 8147 sons;

 44:28 and the one 259 went 3318 out from me, and I said 559, “Surely 389 he is torn 2963 in pieces 2963,” and I have not seen 7200 him since 5704 2008.

 44:29 ‘If you take 3947 this 2088 one 2088 also 1571 from me, and harm 611 befalls 7136a him, you will bring 3381 my gray 7872 hair 7872 down 3381 to Sheol 7585 in sorrow 7463a.’

 44:30 “Now 6258, therefore, when I come 935 to your servant 5650 my father 1, and the lad 5288 is not with us, since his life 5315 is bound 7194 up in the lad’s life 5315,

 44:31 when he sees 7200 that the lad 5288 is not [with us], he will die 4191. Thus your servants 5650 will bring 3381 the gray 7872 hair 7872 of your servant 5650 our father 1 down 3381 to Sheol 7585 in sorrow 3015.

 44:32 “For your servant 5650 became 6148 surety 6148 for the lad 5288 to my father 1, saying 559, ‘If 518 I do not bring 935 him [back] to you, then let me bear 2398 the blame 2398 before my father 1 forever 3605 3117.’

 44:33 “Now 6258, therefore, please 4994 let your servant 5650 remain 3427 instead 8478 of the lad 5288 a slave 5650 to my lord 113, and let the lad 5288 go 5927 up with his brothers 251.

 44:34 “For how 349 shall I go 5927 up to my father 1 if the lad 5288 is not with me—for fear 6435 that I see 7200 the evil 7451b that would overtake 4672 my father 1?”
