 2:1 ¶ And it came to pass on a certain day, that the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came among them to stand before the Lord.

 2:1 ¶ Again there wasº a dayº when the sonsº of Elohimº cameºº to presentºº themselvesº beforeº Yahweh,º and Satanº cameºº alsoº amongº them to presentºº himselfº beforeº Yahweh.º

 2:2 And the Lord, said to the devil, Whence comest thou? Then the devil said before the Lord, I am come from going through the world, and walking about the whole earth.

 2:2 And Yahwehº saidºº untoº Satan,º From whenceººº comestºº thou? And Satanº answeredººº Yahweh,º and said,ºº From going to and froººº in the earth,º and from walking up and downººº in it.

 2:3 And the Lord said to the devil, Hast thou then observed my servant Job, that there is none of [men] upon the earth like him, a harmless, true, blameless, godly man, abstaining from all evil? and he yet cleaves to innocence, whereas thou has told [me] to destroy his substance without cause?

 2:3 And Yahwehº saidºº untoº Satan,º Hast thouºº consideredººº my servantº Job,º thatº [there is] noneº like himº in the earth,º a perfectº and an uprightº man,º one that fearethº Elohim,º and eschewethºº evil?ºº and stillº he holdeth fastºº his integrity,º although thou movedstºº me against him, to destroyºº him without cause.º

 2:4 And the devil answered and said to the Lord, Skin for skin, all that a man has will he give as a ransom for his life.

 2:4 And Satanº answeredººº Yahweh,º and said,ºº Skinº for skin,ºº yea, allº thatº a manº hath will he giveºº forº his life.º

 2:5 Nay, but put forth thine hand, and touch his bones and his flesh: verily he will bless thee to [thy] face.

 2:5 Butº put forthºº thine handº now,º and touchººº his boneº and his flesh,º andº he will curseºº thee toº thy face.º

 2:6 And the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I deliver him up to thee; only save his life.

 2:6 And Yahwehº saidºº untoº Satan,º Behold,º he [is] in thine hand;º butº saveººº his life.º

 2:7 ¶ So the devil went out from the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from [his] feet to [his] head.

 2:7 ¶ So wentºº Satanº forthººº fromºº the presenceº of Yahweh,º and smoteººº Jobº with soreº boilsº from the soleºº of his footº untoº his crown.º

 2:8 And he took a potsherd to scrape away the discharge, and sat upon a dung-heap outside the city.

 2:8 And he tookºº him a potsherdº to scrapeºº himselfº withal; and heº sat downºº amongº the ashes.º

 2:9 ¶ And when much time had passed, his wife said to him, How long wilt thou hold out, saying, Behold, I wait yet a little while, expecting the hope of my deliverance? for, behold, thy memorial is abolished from the earth, [even thy] sons and daughters, the pangs and pains of my womb which I bore in vain with sorrows; and thou thyself sittest down to spend the nights in the open air among the corruption of worms, and I am a wanderer and a servant from place to place and house to house, waiting for the setting of the sun, that I may rest from my labours and my pangs which now beset me: but say some word against the Lord, and die.

 2:9 ¶ Then saidºº his wifeº unto him, Dost thou stillº retainºº thine integrity?º curseºº Elohim,º and die.ºº

 2:10 But he looked on her, and said to her, Thou hast spoken like one of the foolish women. If we have received good things of the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure evil things? In all these things that happened to him, Job sinned not at all with his lips before God.

 2:10 But he saidºº untoº her, Thou speakestºº as oneº of the foolish womenº speaketh.ºº What?º shall we receiveººº goodº at the handºº of Elohim,º and shall we notº receiveºº evil?º In allº thisº did notº Jobº sinºº with his lips.º

 2:11 ¶ Now his three friends having heard of all the evil that was come upon him, came to him each from his own country: Eliphaz the king of the Thaemans, Baldad sovereign of the Saucheans, Sophar king of he Minaeans: and they came to him with one accord, to comfort and to visit him.

 2:11 ¶ Now when Job'sº threeº friendsº heardººº of allº thisº evilº that was comeºº uponº him, they cameºº every oneº from his own place;ºº Eliphazº the Temanite,º and Bildadº the Shuhite,º and Zopharº the Naamathite:º for they had made an appointmentºº togetherº to comeºº to mournºº with him and to comfortºº him.

 2:12 And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and rent every one his garment, and sprinkled dust upon [their heads],

 2:12 And when they lifted upººº their eyesº afar off,ºº and knewºº him not,º they lifted upºº their voice,º and wept;ºº and they rentºº every oneº his mantle,º and sprinkledºº dustº uponº their headsº toward heaven.º

 2:13 and they sat down beside him seven days and seven nights, and no one of them spoke; for they saw that his affliction was dreadful and very great.

 2:13 So they sat downºº withº him upon the groundº sevenº daysº and sevenº nights,º and noneº spakeºº a wordº untoº him: forº they sawºº thatº [his] griefº was veryº great.ººº
