 22:1 ¶
Then Eliphaz the Temanite{gr.Thaemanite} answered and said, |
|
 22:1 ¶
Then Eliphazº
the Temaniteº
answeredºº
and said,ºº |
 22:2
Is it not the Lord that teaches understanding and knowledge? |
|
 22:2
Can a manº
be profitableºº
unto El,º
asº
he thatº
is wiseºº
may be profitableºº
untoº
himself? |
 22:3
For what matters it to the Lord, if thou wert blameless in [thy] works? or is it profitable that thou shouldest perfect thy way? |
|
 22:3
[Is it] any pleasureº
to Shaddai,º
thatº
thou art righteous?ºº
orº
[is it] gainº
[to him], thatº
thou makest thy waysº
perfect?ººº |
 22:4
Wilt thou maintain and plead thine own cause? and will he enter into judgment with thee? |
|
 22:4
Will he reproveºº
thee for fearºº
of thee? will he enterºº
withº
thee into judgment?º |
 22:5
Is not thy wickedness abundant, and thy sins innumerable? |
|
 22:5
[Is] notº
thy wickednessº
great?º
and thine iniquitiesº
infinite?ºº |
 22:6
And thou hast taken security of thy brethren for nothing, and hast taken away the clothing of the naked. |
|
 22:6
Forº
thou hast taken a pledgeºº
from thy brotherº
for nought,º
and strippedºº
the nakedº
of their clothing.º |
 22:7
Neither hast thou given water to the thirsty to drink, but hast taken away the morsel of the hungry. |
|
 22:7
Thou hast notº
given waterº
to the wearyº
to drink,ºº
and thou hast withholdenºº
breadº
from the hungry.ºº |
 22:8
And thou hast accepted the persons of some; and thou hast established those [that were already settled] on the earth. |
|
 22:8
But [as for] the mightyº
man,º
he had the earth;º
and the honourable manººº
dweltºº
in it. |
 22:9
But thou hast sent widows away empty, and has afflicted orphans. |
|
 22:9
Thou hast sentºº
widowsº
awayºº
empty,º
and the armsº
of the fatherlessº
have been broken.ºº |
 22:10
Therefore snares have compassed thee, and disastrous war has troubled thee. |
|
 22:10
Thereforeºº
snaresº
[are] round aboutº
thee, and suddenº
fearº
troublethºº
thee; |
 22:11
The light has proved darkness to thee, and water has covered thee on thy lying down. |
|
 22:11
Orº
darkness,º
[that] thou canst notº
see;ºº
and abundanceº
of watersº
coverºº
thee. |
 22:12
Does not he that dwells in the high places observe? and has he not brought down the proud? |
|
 22:12
[Is] notº
Eloahº
in the heightº
of heaven?º
and beholdºº
the heightº
of the stars,º
howº
highºº
they are!º |
 22:13
And thou has said, What does the Mighty One know? does he judge in the dark? |
|
 22:13
And thou sayest,ºº
Howº
doth Elº
know?ºº
can he judgeºº
throughº
the dark cloud?º |
 22:14
A cloud is his hiding-place, and he shall not be seen; and he passes through the circle of heaven. |
|
 22:14
Thick cloudsº
[are] a coveringº
to him, that he seethºº
not;º
and he walkethºº
in the circuitº
of heaven.º |
 22:15
Wilt thou [not] mark the old way, which righteous men have trodden? |
|
 22:15
Hast thou markedºº
the oldº
wayº
whichº
wickedº
menº
have trodden?ºº |
 22:16
who were seized before their time: their foundations [are as] an overflowing stream. |
|
 22:16
Whichº
were cut downºº
out ofº
time,º
whose foundationº
was overflownºº
with a flood:º |
 22:17
Who say, What will the Lord do to us? or what will the Almighty bring upon us? |
|
 22:17
Which saidºº
unto El,º
Departºº
fromº
us: and whatº
can Shaddaiº
doºº
for them? |
 22:18
Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel for the wicked is far from him. |
|
 22:18
Yet heº
filledºº
their housesº
with goodº
[things]: but the counselº
of the wickedº
is farºº
fromº
me. |
 22:19
The righteous have seen [it], and laughed, and the blameless one has derided [them]. |
|
 22:19
The righteousº
seeºº
[it], and are glad:ºº
and the innocentº
laugh them to scorn.ºº |
 22:20
Verily their substance has been utterly destroyed, and the fire shall devour what is left of their [property]. |
|
 22:20
Whereasº
our substanceº
is notº
cut down,ºº
but the remnantº
of them the fireº
consumeth.ºº |
 22:21
Be firm, I pray thee, if thou canst endure; then thy fruit shall prosper. |
|
 22:21
Acquaintºº
nowº
thyself withº
him, and be at peace:ºº
thereby goodº
shall comeºº
unto thee. |
 22:22
And receive a declaration from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. |
|
 22:22
Receive,ºº
I pray thee,º
the lawº
from his mouth,ºº
and lay upºº
his wordsº
in thine heart.º |
 22:23
And if thou shalt turn and humble thyself before the Lord, thou hast [thus] removed unrighteousness far from thy habitation. |
|
 22:23
Ifº
thou returnºº
toº
Shaddai,º
thou shalt be built up,ºº
thou shalt put awayºº
iniquityº
farºº
from thy tabernacles.ºº |
 22:24
Thou shalt lay up for thyself [treasure] in a heap on the rock; and Sophir [shall be] as the rock of the torrent. |
|
 22:24
Then shalt thou lay upºº
goldº
asº
dust,º
and the [gold] of Ophirº
as the stonesº
of the brooks.º |
 22:25
So the Almighty shall be thy helper from enemies, and he shall bring thee forth pure as silver that has been tried by fire. |
|
 22:25
Yea, Shaddaiº
shall beº
thy defence,º
and thou shalt have plentyº
of silver.º |
 22:26
Then shalt thou have boldness before the Lord, looking up cheerfully to heaven. |
|
 22:26
Forº
thenº
shalt thou have thy delightºº
inº
Shaddai,º
and shalt lift upºº
thy faceº
untoº
Eloah.º |
 22:27
And he shall hear thee when thou prayest to him, and he shall grant thee [power] to pay thy vows. |
|
 22:27
Thou shalt make thy prayerºº
untoº
him, and he shall hearºº
thee, and thou shalt payºº
thy vows.º |
 22:28
And he shall establish to thee again a habitation of righteousness and there shall be light upon thy paths. |
|
 22:28
Thou shalt also decreeºº
a thing,º
and it shall be establishedºº
unto thee: and the lightº
shall shineºº
uponº
thy ways.º |
 22:29
Because thou hast humbled thyself; and thou shalt say, [Man] has behaved proudly, but he shall save him that is of lowly eyes. |
|
 22:29
Whenº
[men] are cast down,ºº
then thou shalt say,ºº
[There is] lifting up;º
and he shall saveºº
the humbleº
person.ºº |
 22:30
He shall deliver the innocent, and do thou save thyself by thy pure hands. |
|
 22:30
He shall deliverºº
the islandº
of the innocent:º
and it is deliveredºº
by the purenessº
of thine hands.º |
