 1:1 ¶ Then Mô´äv מוֹאָבº rebelledºº against Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº afterº the deathº of ´Aç´äv אַחאָב.º

 1:1 ¶ Then Moav rebelled against Yisrael after the death of Achav.

 1:2 And ´Áçazyà אֲחַזיָהº fell downºº throughº a latticeº in his upper chamberº thatº [was] in Šömrôn שֹׁמרוֹן,º and was sick:ºº and he sentºº messengers,º and saidºº untoº them, Go,ººº enquireºº of Ba`al Zævûv בַּעַל־זְבוּבº the ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of `Ekrôn עֶקרוֹןº whetherº I shall recoverºº of this disease.ººº

 1:2 And Achazyah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that [was] in Shomron, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baal-Zevuv the elohim of Eqron whether I shall recover of this disease.

 1:3 But the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº saidºº toº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº the Tišbî תִּשׁבִּי,º Arise,ºº go upºº to meetºº the messengersº of the kingº of Šömrôn שֹׁמרוֹן,º and sayºº untoº them, [Is it] not becauseºº [there is] notº an ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº in Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º [that] yeº goºº to enquireºº of Ba`al Zævûv בַּעַל־זְבוּבº the ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of `Ekrôn עֶקרוֹן?º

 1:3 But the angel of Yahweh said to Eliyyah the Tishbi, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Shomron, and say unto them, [Is it] not because [there is] not an Elohim in Yisrael, [that] ye go to enquire of Baal-Zevuv the elohim of Eqron?

 1:4 Now thereforeº thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º Thou shalt notº come downºº fromº that bedº on whichºº thou art gone up,ºº butº shalt surelyºº die.ºº And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº departed.ººº

 1:4 Now therefore thus saith Yahweh, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Eliyyah departed.

 1:5 ¶ And when the messengersº turned backºº untoº him, he saidºº untoº them, Whyº are ye nowº turned back?ºº

 1:5 ¶ And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back?

 1:6 And they saidºº untoº him, There cameºº a manº upºº to meetºº us, and saidºº untoº us, Go,ººº turn againºº untoº the kingº thatº sentºº you, and sayºº untoº him, Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º [Is it] not becauseºº [there is] notº an ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº in Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º [that] thouº sendestºº to enquireºº of Ba`al Zævûv בַּעַל־זְבוּבº the ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of `Ekrôn עֶקרוֹן?º thereforeº thou shalt notº come downºº fromº that bedº on whichºº thou art gone up,ºº butº shalt surelyºº die.ºº

 1:6 And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith Yahweh, [Is it] not because [there is] not an Elohim in Yisrael, [that] thou sendest to enquire of Baal-Zevuv the elohim of Eqron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

 1:7 And he saidºº untoº them, Whatº mannerº of manº [was he] whichº came upºº to meetºº you, and toldººº youº theseº words?º

 1:7 And he said unto them, What manner of man [was he] which came up to meet you, and told you these words?

 1:8 And they answeredººº him, [He was] an hairyº man,ººº and girtºº with a girdleº of leatherº about his loins.º And he said,ºº Itº [is] ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº the Tišbî תִּשׁבִּי.º

 1:8 And they answered him, [He was] an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It [is] Eliyyah the Tishbi.

 1:9 Then the kingº sentºº untoº him a captainº of fiftyº with his fifty.º And he went upºº toº him: and, behold,º he satºº onº the topº of an hill.º And he spakeºº untoº him, Thou manº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º the kingº hath said,ºº Come down.ºº

 1:9 Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of Elohim, the king hath said, Come down.

 1:10 And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº answeredºº and saidºº toº the captainº of fifty,º Ifº Iº [be] a manº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º then let fireº come downºº fromº heaven,º and consumeºº thee and thy fifty.º And there came downºº fireº fromº heaven,º and consumedºº him and his fifty.º

 1:10 And Eliyyah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I [be] a man of Elohim, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

 1:11 Againºº also he sentºº untoº him anotherº captainº of fiftyº with his fifty.º And he answeredºº and saidºº untoº him, O manº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º thusº hath the kingº said,ºº Come downºº quickly.º

 1:11 Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of Elohim, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.

 1:12 And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº answeredºº and saidºº untoº them, Ifº Iº [be] a manº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º let fireº come downºº fromº heaven,º and consumeºº thee and thy fifty.º And the fireº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº came downºº fromº heaven,º and consumedºº him and his fifty.º

 1:12 And Eliyyah answered and said unto them, If I [be] a man of Elohim, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of Elohim came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

 1:13 ¶ And he sentºº againºº a captainº of the thirdº fiftyº with his fifty.º And the thirdº captainº of fiftyº went up,ºº and cameºº and fellºº onº his kneesº beforeº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּה,º and besoughtººº him, and saidºº untoº him, O manº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º I pray thee,º let my life,º and the lifeº of theseº fiftyº thy servants,º be preciousºº in thy sight.º

 1:13 ¶ And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Eliyyah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of Elohim, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.

 1:14 Behold,º there cameºº fireº downººº fromº heaven,º and burnt upººº the twoº captainsº of the formerº fiftiesº with their fifties:º therefore let my lifeº nowº be preciousºº in thy sight.º

 1:14 Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.

 1:15 And the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº saidºº untoº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּה,º Go downºº withº him: be not afraidººº ofºº him.º And he arose,ºº and went downºº withº him untoº the king.º

 1:15 And the angel of Yahweh said unto Eliyyah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.

 1:16 And he saidºº untoº him, Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º Forasmuch asºº thou hast sentºº messengersº to enquireºº of Ba`al Zævûv בַּעַל־זְבוּבº the ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of `Ekrôn עֶקרוֹן,º [is it] not becauseºº [there is] noº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº in Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº to enquireºº of his word?º thereforeº thou shalt notº come downºº offº that bedº on whichºº thou art gone up,ºº butº shalt surelyºº die.ºº

 1:16 And he said unto him, Thus saith Yahweh, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baal-Zevuv the elohim of Eqron, [is it] not because [there is] no Elohim in Yisrael to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

 1:17 ¶ So he diedºº according to the wordº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº whichº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº had spoken.ºº And Yæhôräm יְהוֹרָםº reignedºº in his steadº in the secondº yearº of Yæhôräm יְהוֹרָםº the sonº of Yæhôšäfä+ יְהוֹשָׁפָטº kingº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה;º becauseº he hadº noº son.º

 1:17 ¶ So he died according to the word of Yahweh which Eliyyah had spoken. And Yehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Yehoram the son of Yehoshafat king of Yehudah; because he had no son.

 1:18 Now the restº of the actsº of ´Áçazyà אֲחַזיָהº whichº he did,ºº [are] theyº notº writtenºº inº the bookº of the chroniclesºº of the kingsº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל?º

 1:18 Now the rest of the acts of Achazyah which he did, [are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yisrael?
