 55:1 ¶ [[For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. Maschil of David.]] Give ear to my prayer, O God; And hide not thyself from my supplication.

 55:1 ¶ [[To the chief Musicianºº on Neginoth,º Maschil,ºº [A Psalm] of David.]]º Give earºº to my prayer,º O God;º and hideºº not thyselfºº from my supplication.ºº

 55:2 Attend unto me, and answer me: I am restless in my complaint, and moan,

 55:2 Attendºº unto me, and hearºº me: I mournºº in my complaint,º and make a noise;ºº

 55:3 Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the oppression of the wicked; For they cast iniquity upon me, And in anger they persecute me.

 55:3 Because of the voiceºº of the enemy,ºº becauseºº of the oppressionº of the wicked:º forº they castºº iniquityº uponº me, and in wrathº they hateºº me.

 55:4 My heart is sore pained within me: And the terrors of death are fallen upon me.

 55:4 My heartº is sore painedºº withinº me: and the terrorsº of deathº are fallenºº uponº me.

 55:5 Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, And horror hath overwhelmed me.

 55:5 Fearfulnessº and tremblingº are comeºº upon me, and horrorº hath overwhelmedºº me.

 55:6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! Then would I fly away, and be at rest.

 55:6 And I said,ºº Oh thatººº I hadº wingsº like a dove!º [for then] would I fly away,ºº and be at rest.ºº

 55:7 Lo, then would I wander far off, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah.

 55:7 Lo,º [then] would I wanderºº far off,ºº [and] remainºº in the wilderness.º Selah.º

 55:8 I would haste me to a shelter From the stormy wind and tempest.

 55:8 I would hastenºº my escapeº from the windyºº stormºº [and] tempest.ºº

 55:9 Destroy, O Lord, [and] divide their tongue; For I have seen violence and strife in the city.

 55:9 Destroy,ºº O Lord,º [and] divideºº their tongues:º forº I have seenºº violenceº and strifeº in the city.º

 55:10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: Iniquity also and mischief are in the midst of it.

 55:10 Dayº and nightº they go aboutºº it uponº the wallsº thereof: mischiefº also and sorrowº [are] in the midstº of it.

 55:11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: Oppression and guile depart not from its streets.

 55:11 Wickednessº [is] in the midstº thereof: deceitº and guileº departºº notº fromº her streets.º

 55:12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; Then I could have borne it: Neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; Then I would have hid myself from him:

 55:12 Forº [it was] notº an enemyºº [that] reproachedºº me; then I could have borneºº [it]: neitherº [was it] he that hatedºº me [that] did magnifyºº [himself] againstº me; then I would have hidºº myselfº fromº him:

 55:13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, My companion, and my familiar friend.

 55:13 But [it was] thou,º a manº mine equal,º my guide,º and mine acquaintance.ºº

 55:14 We took sweet counsel together; We walked in the house of God with the throng.

 55:14 We took sweetºº counselº together,º [and] walkedºº unto the houseº of Godº in company.º

 55:15 Let death come suddenly upon them, Let them go down alive into Sheol; For wickedness is in their dwelling, in the midst of them.

 55:15 Let deathº seizeºººº uponº them, [and] let them go downºº quickº into hell:º forº wickednessº [is] in their dwellings,º [and] amongº them.

 55:16 As for me, I will call upon God; And Jehovah will save me.

 55:16 As for me, Iº will callºº uponº God;º and the LORDº shall saveºº me.

 55:17 Evening, and morning, and at noonday, will I complain, and moan; And he will hear my voice.

 55:17 Evening,º and morning,º and at noon,º will I pray,ºº and cry aloud:ºº and he shall hearºº my voice.º

 55:18 He hath redeemed my soul in peace from the battle that was against me; For they were many [that strove] with me.

 55:18 He hath deliveredºº my soulº in peaceº from the battleºº [that was] against me: forº there wereº manyº withº me.

 55:19 God will hear, and answer them, Even he that abideth of old, Selah. [The men] who have no changes, And who fear not God.

 55:19 Godº shall hear,ºº and afflictººº them, even he that abidethºº of old.º Selah.º Becauseº they have noº changes,º therefore they fearºº notº God.º

 55:20 He hath put forth his hands against such as were at peace with him: He hath profaned his covenant.

 55:20 He hath put forthºº his handsº against such as be at peaceº with him: he hath brokenºº his covenant.º

 55:21 His mouth was smooth as butter, But his heart was war: His words were softer than oil, Yet were they drawn swords.

 55:21 [The words] of his mouthº were smootherºº than butter,º but warº [was] in his heart:º his wordsº were softerºº than oil,ºº yet [were] theyº drawn swords.º

 55:22 Cast thy burden upon Jehovah, and he will sustain thee: He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.

 55:22 Castºº thy burdenº uponº the LORD,º and heº shall sustainºº thee: he shall neverºº sufferºº the righteousº to be moved.ºº

 55:23 But thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the pit of destruction: Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; But I will trust in thee.

 55:23 But thou,º O God,º shalt bring them downºº into the pitº of destruction:º bloodyº and deceitfulº menºº shall notº live out halfºº their days;º but Iº will trustºº in thee.
