 5:1 ¶
And it came to pass when the kings of the Amorites who were beyond Jordan heard, and the kings of Zidon{gr.Phoenicia} by the sea, that the Lord God had dried up the river Jordan from before the children of Israel when they passed over, that their hearts failed, and they were terror-stricken, and there was no sense in them because of the children of Israel. |
|
 5:1 ¶
And it came to pass,º
when allº
the kingsº
of the Amorites,º
whichº
[were] on the sideº
of Jordanº
westward,º
and allº
the kingsº
of the Canaanites,º
whichº
[were] byº
the sea,º
heardººº
thatº
Yahwehº
had dried upººº
the watersº
of Jordanº
from beforeºº
the childrenº
of Israel,º
untilº
we were passed over,ºº
that their heartº
melted,ºº
neitherº
wasº
there spiritº
in them any more,º
becauseºº
of the childrenº
of Israel.º |
 5:2 ¶
And about this time the Lord said to Joshua{gr.Jesus}, Make thee stone knives of sharp stone, and sit down and circumcise the children of Israel the second time. |
|
 5:2 ¶
At thatº
timeº
Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Joshua,º
Makeºº
thee sharpºº
knives,º
and circumciseºº
againººº
the childrenº
of Israelº
the secondº
time.º |
 5:3
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} made sharp knives of stone, and circumcised the children of Israel at the place called the "Hill of Foreskins." |
|
 5:3
And Joshuaº
madeºº
him sharpºº
knives,º
and circumcisedººº
the childrenº
of Israelº
atº
the hillº
of the foreskins.º |
 5:4
And [this is] the way in which Joshua{gr.Jesus} purified the children of Israel; as many as were born in the way, and as many as were uncircumcised of them that came out of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, |
|
 5:4
And thisº
[is] the causeº
whyº
Joshuaº
did circumcise:ºº
Allº
the peopleº
that came outºº
of Egypt,ºº
[that were] males,º
[even] allº
the menºº
of war,º
diedºº
in the wildernessº
by the way,º
after they came outºº
of Egypt.ºº |
 5:5
all these Joshua{gr.Jesus} circumcised; for forty and two years Israel wondered in the wilderness of Mabdaris-- |
|
 5:5
Nowº
allº
the peopleº
that came outºº
wereº
circumcised:ºº
but allº
the peopleº
[that were] bornº
in the wildernessº
by the wayº
as they came forthºº
out of Egypt,ºº
[them] they had notº
circumcised.ºº |
 5:6
Wherefore most of the fighting men that came out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, were uncircumcised, who disobeyed the commands of God; concerning whom also he determined that they should not see the land, which the Lord sware to give to their fathers, [even] a land flowing with milk and honey. |
|
 5:6
Forº
the childrenº
of Israelº
walkedºº
fortyº
yearsº
in the wilderness,º
tillº
allº
the peopleº
[that were] menºº
of war,º
which came outºº
of Egypt,ºº
were consumed,ºº
becauseº
they obeyedºº
notº
the voiceº
of Yahweh:º
unto whomº
Yahwehº
swareºº
that he would notº
shewºº
themº
the land,º
whichº
Yahwehº
swareºº
unto their fathersº
that he would giveºº
us, a landº
that flowethºº
with milkº
and honey.º |
 5:7
And in their place he raised up their sons, whom Joshua{gr.Jesus} circumcised, because they were uncircumcised, having been born by the way. |
|
 5:7
And their children,º
[whom] he raised upºº
in their stead,º
them Joshuaº
circumcised:ºº
forº
they wereº
uncircumcised,º
becauseº
they had notº
circumcisedºº
them by the way.º |
 5:8
And when they had been circumcised they rested continuing there in the camp till they were healed. |
|
 5:8
And it came to pass,º
whenº
they had doneºº
circumcisingºº
allº
the people,º
that they abodeºº
in their placesº
in the camp,º
tillº
they were whole.ºº |
 5:9
And the Lord said to Joshua{gr.Jesus} the son of Nun{gr.Naue}, On this day have I removed the reproach of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} from you: and he called the name of that place Gilgal{gr.Galgala}. |
|
 5:9
And Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Joshua,º
This dayº
have I rolled awayººº
the reproachº
of Egyptº
from offºº
you. Wherefore the nameº
of the placeº
is calledºº
Gilgalº
untoº
thisº
day.º |
 5:10 ¶
And the children of Israel kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, to the westward of Jericho on the opposite side of the Jordan in the plain. |
|
 5:10 ¶
And the childrenº
of Israelº
encampedºº
in Gilgal,º
and keptººº
the passoverº
on the fourteenthºº
dayº
of the monthº
at evenº
in the plainsº
of Jericho.º |
 5:11
And they ate of the grain of the earth unleavened and new [corn]. |
|
 5:11
And they did eatºº
of the old cornºº
of the landº
on the morrowº
afterºº
the passover,º
unleavened cakes,º
and parchedºº
[corn] in the selfsameºº
day.º |
 5:12 ¶
In this day the manna failed, after they had eaten of the corn of the land, and the children of Israel no longer had manna: and they took the fruits of the land of the Zidonians{gr.Phoenicians} in that year. |
|
 5:12 ¶
And the mannaº
ceasedºº
on the morrowºº
after they had eatenºº
of the old cornºº
of the land;º
neitherº
hadº
the childrenº
of Israelº
mannaº
any more;º
but they did eatºº
of the fruitºº
of the landº
of Canaanº
thatº
year.º |
 5:13 ¶
And it came to pass when Joshua{gr.Jesus} was in Jericho, that he looked up with his eyes and saw a man standing before him, and [there was] a drawn sword in his hand; and Joshua{gr.Jesus} drew near and said to him, Art thou for us or on the side of our enemies? |
|
 5:13 ¶
And it came to pass,º
when Joshuaº
wasº
by Jericho,º
that he lifted upºº
his eyesº
and looked,ºº
and, behold,º
there stoodºº
a manº
over againstº
him with his swordº
drawnºº
in his hand:º
and Joshuaº
wentººº
unto him,º
and saidºº
unto him, [Art] thouº
for us, orº
for our adversaries?º |
 5:14
And he said to him, I am now come, the chief captain of the host of the Lord. And Joshua{gr.Jesus} fell on his face upon the earth, and said to him, Lord, what commandest thou thy servant? |
|
 5:14
And he said,ºº
Nay;º
butº
[as] captainº
of the hostº
of Yahwehº
am Iº
nowº
come.ºº
And Joshuaº
fellºº
onº
his faceº
to the earth,º
and did worship,ºº
and saidºº
unto him, Whatº
saithºº
my adonº
untoº
his servant?º |
 5:15
And the captain of the Lord's host said to Joshua{gr.Jesus}, Loose thy shoe off thy feet, for the place whereon thou now standest is holy. |
|
 5:15
And the captainº
of Yahweh'sº
hostº
saidºº
untoº
Joshua,º
Looseºº
thy shoeº
from offºº
thy foot;º
forº
the placeº
whereonºº
thouº
standestºº
[is] holy.º
And Joshuaº
didºº
so.º |
