But the children of Israel committed a great trespass, and purloined [part] of the accursed thing; and Achan{gr.Achar} the son of Carmi{gr.Charmi}, the son of Zimri{gr.Zambri}, the son of Zerah{gr.Zara}, of the tribe of Judah{gr.Juda}, took of the accursed thing; and the Lord was very angry with the children of Israel. |

against the childrenº

And Joshua{gr.Jesus} sent men to Ai{gr.Gai}, which is by Bethel{gr.Baethel}, saying, Spy out Ai{gr.Gai}: and the men went up and spied Ai{gr.Gai}. |

And they returned to Joshua{gr.Jesus}, and said to him, Let not all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and take the city by siege: carry not up thither the whole people, for [the enemy] are few. |

And there went up about three thousand men, and they fled from before the men of Ai{gr.Gai}. |

And the men of Ai{gr.Gai} slew of them to the number of thirty-six men, and they pursued them from the gate, and destroyed them from the steep hill; and the heart of the people was alarmed and became as water. |

for they chasedºº
them [from] beforeº
the gateº
[even] untoº
Shebarim,º
and smoteºº
them in the going down:º
wherefore the heartsº
of the peopleº

And Joshua{gr.Jesus} tore his garments; and Joshua{gr.Jesus} fell on the earth on his face before the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they cast dust on their heads. |

his clothes,º
and fellºº
to the earthº
uponº
his faceº
beforeº
the arkº
of Yahwehº
untilº
the eventide,º
heº
and the eldersº
of Israel,º
and putºº
dustº

And Joshua{gr.Jesus} said, I pray, Lord, wherefore has thy servant brought this people over Jordan to deliver them to the Amorite to destroy us? would we had remained and settled ourselves beyond Jordan. |

whereforeº

to deliverºº
us into the handº
of the Amorites,º

on the other sideº

And what shall I say since Israel has turned his back before his enemy? |

their backsº

And when the Canaanite{gr.Chananite} and all the inhabitants of the land hear it, they shall compass us round and destroy us from off the land: and what wilt thou do [for] thy great name? |

For the Canaanitesº

the inhabitantsºº
of the landº
shall hearºº
[of it], and shall environ us round,ººº
and cut offººº
our nameº
fromº
the earth:º
and whatº
wilt thou doºº
unto thy greatº

And the Lord said to Joshua{gr.Jesus}, Rise up; why hast thou fallen upon thy face? |

And Yahwehº

Joshua,º
Get thee up;ºº
whereforeº
liestºº
thouº
thusº
uponº
thy face?º |

The people has sinned, and transgressed the covenant which I made with them; they have stolen from the cursed thing, and put it into their store. |

and they have alsoº
transgressedººº
my covenantº
whichº
I commandedºº
them: for they have evenº
takenºº
ofº
the accursed thing,º
and have alsoº
stolen,ºº
and dissembledºº
also,º
and they have putºº
[it] evenº
among their own stuff.º |

And the children of Israel will not be able to stand before their enemies; they will turn their back before their enemies, for they have become an accursed thing: I will not any longer be with you, unless ye remove the cursed thing from yourselves. |

Therefore the childrenº
of Israelº

their enemies,ºº
[but] turnedºº
[their] backsº

their enemies,ºº
becauseº
they wereº
accursed:º
neitherº
will I beº
withº
you any more,ºº
exceptºº
ye destroyºº
the accursedº

Rise, sanctify the people and tell them to sanctify themselves for the morrow: thus says the Lord God of Israel, The accursed thing is among you; ye shall not be able to stand before your enemies, until ye shall have removed the cursed thing from among you. |

[There is] an accursed thingº

And ye shall all be gathered together by your tribes in the morning, and it shall come to pass that the tribe which the Lord shall shew, ye shall bring by families; and the family which the Lord shall shew, ye shall bring by households; and the household which the Lord shall shew, ye shall bring man by man. |

In the morningº
therefore ye shall be broughtºº
according to your tribes:º
and it shall be,º
[that] the tribeº
whichº
Yahwehº
takethºº
shall comeºº
according to the familiesº
[thereof]; and the familyº
whichº
Yahwehº
shall takeºº
shall comeºº
by households;º
and the householdº
whichº
Yahwehº
shall takeºº
shall comeºº
manº

And the man who shall be pointed out, shall be burnt with fire, and all that he has; because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and has wrought wickedness in Israel. |

And it shall be,º
[that] he that is takenºº
with the accursed thingº
shall be burntºº
with fire,º
he and allº
thatº
he hath: becauseº
he hath transgressedººº
the covenantº
of Yahweh,º
and becauseº
he hath wroughtºº
follyº
in Israel.º |

7:16 ¶
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} rose up early, and brought the people by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah{gr.Juda} was pointed out. |
|

in the morning,º

by their tribes;º
and the tribeº
of Judahº
was taken:ºº |

And it was brought by their families, and family of the Zaraites was pointed out. |

of Judah;º
and he tookººº
the familyº
of the Zarhites:º
and he broughtººº
the familyº
of the Zarhitesº
manº
by man;º
and Zabdiº
was taken:ºº |

And it was brought man by man, and Achan{gr.Achar} the son of Zimri{gr.Zambri} the son of Zerah{gr.Zara} was pointed out. |

And he broughtººº
his householdº
manº
by man;º
and Achan,º
the sonº
of Carmi,º
the sonº
of Zabdi,º
the sonº
of Zerah,º
of the tribeº
of Judah,º
was taken.ºº |

And Joshua{gr.Jesus} said to Achan{gr.Achar}, Give glory this day to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession; and tell me what thou hast done, and hide it not from me. |

of Israel,º

unto him; and tellºº

And Achan{gr.Achar} answered Joshua{gr.Jesus}, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel: thus and thus have I done: |

against Yahwehº

of Israel,º

I saw in the spoil an embroidered mantle, and two hundred didrachms of silver, and one golden wedge of fifty didrachms, and I desired them and took them; and, behold, they are hid in my tent, and the silver is hid under them. |

When I sawºº
among the spoilsº

goodlyº
Babylonishº
garment,º
and two hundredº
shekelsº
of silver,º
and aº
wedgeº
of goldº
of fiftyº
shekelsº
weight,º
then I covetedºº
them, and tookºº
them; and, behold,º
they [are] hidºº
in the earthº
in the midstº
of my tent,º
and the silverº
underº

And Joshua{gr.Jesus} sent messengers, and they ran to the tent into the camp; and these things were hidden in his tent, and the silver under them. |
|
7:22 ¶
So Joshuaº

messengers,º
and they ranºº
unto the tent;º
and, behold,º
[it was] hidºº
in his tent,º
and the silverº
underº
it. |

7:23
And they brought them out of the tent, and brought them to Joshua{gr.Jesus} and the elders of Israel, and they laid them before the Lord. |

And they tookºº
them out of the midstºº
of the tent,º
and broughtºº
them untoº
Joshua,º
and untoº
allº
the childrenº
of Israel,º
and laid them outºº
beforeº
Yahweh.º |

And Joshua{gr.Jesus} took Achan{gr.Achar} the son of Zerah{gr.Zara}, and brought him to the valley of Achor, and his sons, and his daughters, and his calves, and his asses, and all his sheep, and his tent, and all his property, and all the people [were] with him; and he brought them to Emec Achor. |

and the silver,º
and the garment,º
and the wedgeº
of gold,º
and his sons,º
and his daughters,º
and his oxen,º
and his asses,º

them unto the valleyº

And Joshua{gr.Jesus} said to Achan{gr.Achar}, Why hast thou destroyed us? the Lord destroy thee as at this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones. |
|

And Joshuaº
said,ºº
Whyº
hast thou troubledºº
us? Yahwehº
shall troubleºº
thee thisº
day.º
And allº
Israelº
stonedººº
him with stones,º
and burnedºº
them with fire,º
after they had stonedººº
them with stones.º |
|
7:26
And they set up over him a great heap of stones; and the Lord ceased from his fierce anger. Therefore he called the place Emecachor until this day. |
|

And they raisedºº
overº
him a greatº
heapº
of stonesº
untoº
thisº
day.º
So Yahwehº
turnedºº
from the fiercenessºº
of his anger.º
Whereforeºº
the nameº
of thatº
placeº
was called,ºº
The valleyº
of Achor,º
untoº
thisº
day.º |
