 8:1 ¶
And the Lord said to Joshua{gr.Jesus}, Fear not, nor be timorous: take with thee all the men of war, and arise, go up to Ai{gr.Gai}; behold, I have given into thy hands the king of Ai{gr.Gai}, and his land. |
|
 8:1 ¶
And Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Joshua,º
Fearºº
not,º
neitherº
be thou dismayed:ºº
takeººº
allº
the peopleº
of warº
withº
thee, and arise,ºº
go upºº
to Ai:º
see,ºº
I have givenºº
into thy handºº
the kingº
of Ai,º
and his people,º
and his city,º
and his land:º |
 8:2
And thou shalt do to Ai{gr.Gai}, as thou didst to Jericho and its king; and thou shalt take to thyself the spoil of its cattle; set now for thyself an ambush for the city behind. |
|
 8:2
And thou shalt doºº
to Aiº
and her kingº
asº
thou didstºº
unto Jerichoº
and her king:º
onlyº
the spoilº
thereof, and the cattleº
thereof, shall ye take for a preyºº
unto yourselves: layºº
thee an ambushºº
for the cityº
behindºº
it. |
 8:3 ¶
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} and all the men of war rose to go up to Ai{gr.Gai}; and Joshua{gr.Jesus} chose out thirty thousand mighty men, and he sent them away by night. |
|
 8:3 ¶
So Joshuaº
arose,ºº
and allº
the peopleº
of war,º
to go upºº
against Ai:º
and Joshuaº
chose outºº
thirtyº
thousandº
mightyº
menº
of valour,º
and sent them awayºº
by night.º |
 8:4
And he charged them, saying, Do ye lie in ambush behind the city: do not go far from the city, and ye shall all be ready. |
|
 8:4
And he commandedºº
them, saying,ºº
Behold,ºº
yeº
shall lie in waitºº
against the city,º
[even] behindºº
the city:º
goºº
notº
veryº
farºº
fromº
the city,º
but beº
ye allº
ready:ºº |
 8:5
Land I and all with me will draw near to the city: and it shall come to pass when the inhabitants of Ai{gr.Gai} shall come forth to meet us, as before, that we will flee from before them. |
|
 8:5
And I,º
and allº
the peopleº
thatº
[are] withº
me, will approachºº
untoº
the city:º
and it shall come to pass,º
whenº
they come outºº
againstºº
us, asº
at the first,º
that we will fleeºº
beforeº
them, |
 8:6
And when they shall come out after us, we will draw them away from the city; and they will say, These men flee from before us, as also before. |
|
 8:6
(For they will come outºº
afterº
us) tillº
we have drawnºº
them fromº
the city;º
forº
they will say,ºº
They fleeºº
beforeº
us, asº
at the first:º
therefore we will fleeºº
beforeº
them. |
 8:7
And ye shall rise up out of the ambuscade, and go into the city. |
|
 8:7
Then yeº
shall rise upºº
from the ambush,ººº
and seizeºº
uponºº
the city:º
for Yahwehº
your Elohimº
will deliverºº
it into your hand.º |
 8:8
Ye shall do according to this word, lo! I have commanded you. |
|
 8:8
And it shall be,º
when ye have takenººº
the city,º
[that] ye shall setººº
the cityº
on fire:º
according to the commandmentº
of Yahwehº
shall ye do.ºº
See,ºº
I have commandedºº
you. |
 8:9 ¶
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} sent them, and they went to lie in ambush; and they lay between Bethel{gr.Baethel} and Ai{gr.Gai}, westward of Ai{gr.Gai}. |
|
 8:9 ¶
Joshuaº
therefore sent them forth:ºº
and they wentººº
toº
lie in ambush,º
and abodeºº
betweenº
Bethelº
and Ai,º
on the west sideºº
of Ai:º
but Joshuaº
lodgedºº
thatº
nightº
amongº
the people.º |
 8:10
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people; and he went up, he and the elders before the people to Ai{gr.Gai}. |
|
 8:10
And Joshuaº
rose up earlyºº
in the morning,º
and numberedººº
the people,º
and went up,ºº
heº
and the eldersº
of Israel,º
beforeº
the peopleº
to Ai.º |
 8:11
And all the men of war went up with him, and they went forward and came over against the city eastward. |
|
 8:11
And allº
the people,º
[even the people] of warº
thatº
[were] withº
him, went up,ºº
and drew nigh,ºº
and cameºº
beforeº
the city,º
and pitchedºº
on the north sideºº
of Ai:º
now [there was] a valleyº
betweenº
them and Ai.º |
 8:12
And the ambuscade [was] on the west side of the city. |
|
 8:12
And he tookºº
about fiveº
thousandº
men,º
and setºº
them to lie in ambushºº
betweenº
Bethelº
and Ai,º
on the west sideºº
of the city.ººº |
 8:13
[Absent from Manuscript] |
|
 8:13
And when they had setºº
the people,º
[even]º
allº
the hostº
thatº
[was] on the northºº
of the city,º
and their liers in waitº
on the westºº
of the city,º
Joshuaº
wentººº
thatº
nightº
into the midstº
of the valley.º |
 8:14 ¶
And it came to pass when the king of Ai{gr.Gai} saw [it], he hasted and went out to meet them direct to the battle, he and all the people [that were] with him: and he knew not that there was an ambuscade [formed] against him behind the city. |
|
 8:14 ¶
And it came to pass,º
when the kingº
of Aiº
sawºº
[it], that they hastedºº
and rose up early,ºº
and the menºº
of the cityº
went outºº
againstºº
Israelº
to battle,º
heº
and allº
his people,º
at a time appointed,º
beforeº
the plain;º
but heº
wistºº
notº
thatº
[there were] liers in ambushºº
against him behindºº
the city.º |
 8:15
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} and Israel saw, and retreated from before them. |
|
 8:15
And Joshuaº
and allº
Israelº
made as if they were beatenºº
beforeº
them, and fledºº
by the wayº
of the wilderness.º |
 8:16
And they pursued after the children of Israel, and they themselves went to a distance from the city. |
|
 8:16
And allº
the peopleº
thatº
[were] in Aiººº
were calledºº
togetherº
to pursueºº
afterº
them: and they pursuedºº
afterº
Joshua,º
and were drawn awayºº
fromº
the city.º |
 8:17
There was no one left in Ai{gr.Gai} who did not pursue after Israel; and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel. |
|
 8:17
And there was notº
a manº
leftºº
in Aiº
or Bethel,º
thatº
went not outººº
afterº
Israel:º
and they leftººº
the cityº
open,ºº
and pursuedºº
afterº
Israel.º |
 8:18
And the Lord said to Joshua{gr.Jesus}, Stretch forth thy hand with the spear that is in thy hand toward the city, for I have delivered it into thy hands; and the liers in wait shall rise up quickly out of their place. |
|
 8:18
And Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Joshua,º
Stretch outºº
the spearº
thatº
[is] in thy handº
towardº
Ai;º
forº
I will giveºº
it into thine hand.º
And Joshuaº
stretched outºº
the spearº
thatº
[he had] in his handº
towardº
the city.º |
 8:19
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} stretched out his hand [and] his spear toward the city, and the ambuscade rose up quickly out of their place; and they came forth when he stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and burnt the city with fire. |
|
 8:19
And the ambushºº
aroseºº
quicklyº
out of their place,ºº
and they ranºº
as soon as he had stretched outºº
his hand:º
and they enteredºº
into the city,º
and tookºº
it, and hastedºº
and setººº
the cityº
on fire.º |
 8:20
And when the inhabitants of Ai{gr.Gai} looked round behind them, then they saw the smoke going up out of the city to heaven, and they were no longer able to flee this way or that way. |
|
 8:20
And when the menºº
of Aiº
lookedºº
behindº
them, they saw,ºº
and, behold,º
the smokeº
of the cityº
ascended upºº
to heaven,º
and they hadº
noº
powerº
to fleeºº
this wayº
or that way:º
and the peopleº
that fledºº
to the wildernessº
turned backºº
uponº
the pursuers.ºº |
 8:21
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} and all Israel saw that the ambuscade had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city went up to heaven; and they turned and smote the men of Ai{gr.Gai}. |
|
 8:21
And when Joshuaº
and allº
Israelº
sawºº
thatº
the ambushºº
had takenººº
the city,º
and thatº
the smokeº
of the cityº
ascended,ºº
then they turned again,ºº
and slewººº
the menºº
of Ai.º |
 8:22
And these came forth out of the city to meet them; and they were in the midst of the army, some [being] on this side, and some on that; and they smote them until there was not left of them one who survived and escaped. |
|
 8:22
And the otherº
issued outºº
ofº
the cityº
againstºº
them; so they wereº
in the midstº
of Israel,º
someº
on this side,ºº
and someº
on that side:ºº
and they smoteºº
them, soº
thatº
they letºº
noneº
of them remainºº
or escape.º |
 8:23
And they took the king of Ai{gr.Gai} alive, and brought him to Joshua{gr.Jesus}. |
|
 8:23
And the kingº
of Aiº
they tookºº
alive,º
and broughtºº
him toº
Joshua.º |
 8:24
And when the children of Israel had ceased slaying all that were in Ai{gr.Gai}, and in the fields, and in the mountain on the descent, from whence they pursued them [even] to the end, then Joshua{gr.Jesus} returned to Ai{gr.Gai}, and smote it with the edge of the sword. |
|
 8:24
And it came to pass,º
when Israelº
had made an endºº
of slayingººº
allº
the inhabitantsºº
of Aiº
in the field,º
in the wildernessº
whereinº
they chasedºº
them, and when they were allº
fallenºº
on the edgeº
of the sword,º
untilº
they were consumed,ºº
that allº
the Israelitesº
returnedºº
unto Ai,º
and smoteºº
it with the edgeº
of the sword.º |
 8:25
And they that fell in that day, men and women, were twelve thousand: [they slew] all the inhabitants of Ai{gr.Gai}. |
|
 8:25
And [so] it was,º
[that] allº
that fellºº
thatº
day,º
both of menºº
and women,º
[were] twelveºº
thousand,º
[even] allº
the menºº
of Ai.º |
 8:26
[Absent from Manuscript] |
|
 8:26
For Joshuaº
drewºº
notº
his handº
back,ºº
wherewithº
he stretched outºº
the spear,º
untilºº
he had utterly destroyedººº
allº
the inhabitantsºº
of Ai.º |
 8:27
Beside the spoils that were in the city, all things which the children of Israel took as spoil for themselves according to the command of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Joshua{gr.Jesus}. |
|
 8:27
Onlyº
the cattleº
and the spoilº
of thatº
cityº
Israelº
took for a preyºº
unto themselves, according unto the wordº
of Yahwehº
whichº
he commandedººº
Joshua.º |
 8:28
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} burnt the city with fire: he made it an uninhabited heap for ever, [even] to this day. |
|
 8:28
And Joshuaº
burntººº
Ai,º
and madeºº
it an heapº
for ever,º
[even] a desolationº
untoº
thisº
day.º |
 8:29
And he hanged the king of Ai{gr.Gai} on a gallows; and he remained on the tree till evening: and when the sun went down, Joshua{gr.Jesus} gave charge, and they took down his body from the tree, and cast it into a pit, and they set over him a heap of stones until this day. |
|
 8:29
And the kingº
of Aiº
he hangedºº
onº
a treeº
untilº
eventide:ºº
and as soon as the sunº
was down,ºº
Joshuaº
commandedºº
that they should takeºº
his carcaseº
downºººº
fromº
the tree,º
and castºº
it atº
the enteringº
of the gateº
of the city,º
and raiseºº
thereonº
a greatº
heapº
of stones,º
[that remaineth] untoº
thisº
day.º |
 8:30 ¶
Then Joshua{gr.Jesus} built an altar to the Lord God of Israel in mount Ebal{gr.Gaebal}, |
|
 8:30 ¶
Thenº
Joshuaº
builtºº
an altarº
unto Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israelº
in mountº
Ebal,º |
 8:31
as Mosheh{gr.Moses} the servant of the Lord commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the law of Mosheh{gr.Moses}, an altar of unhewn stones, on which iron had not been lifted up; and he offered there whole-burnt-offerings to the Lord, and a peace-offering. |
|
 8:31
Asº
Mosesº
the servantº
of Yahwehº
commandedººº
the childrenº
of Israel,º
as it is writtenºº
in the bookº
of the lawº
of Moses,º
an altarº
of wholeº
stones,º
overº
whichº
noº
man hath lift upºº
[any] iron:º
and they offeredºº
thereonº
burnt offeringsº
unto Yahweh,º
and sacrificedºº
peace offerings.º |
 8:32 ¶
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} wrote upon the stones a copy of the law, [even] the law of Mosheh{gr.Moses}, before the children of Israel. |
|
 8:32 ¶
And he wroteºº
thereº
uponº
the stonesºº
a copyº
of the lawº
of Moses,º
whichº
he wroteºº
in the presenceº
of the childrenº
of Israel.º |
 8:33
And all Israel, and their elders, and their judges, and their scribes, passed on one side and on the other before the ark; and the priests and the Levites took up the ark of the covenant of the Lord; and the stranger and the native [were there], who were half of them near mount Garizin, and half near mount Ebal{gr.Gaebal}, as Mosheh{gr.Moses} the servant of the Lord commanded at first, to bless the people. |
|
 8:33
And allº
Israel,º
and their elders,º
and officers,ºº
and their judges,ºº
stoodºº
on this sideºº
the arkº
and on that sideºº
beforeº
the priestsº
the Levites,º
which bareºº
the arkº
of the covenantº
of Yahweh,º
as well the stranger,º
as he that was bornº
among them;º
halfº
of them overº
againstº
mountº
Gerizim,º
and halfº
of them overº
againstº
mountº
Ebal;º
asº
Mosesº
the servantº
of Yahwehº
had commandedºº
before,º
that they should blessººº
the peopleº
of Israel.º |
 8:34
And afterwards Joshua{gr.Jesus} read accordingly all the words of this law, the blessings and the curses, according to all things written in the law of Mosheh{gr.Moses}. |
|
 8:34
And afterwardºº
he readººº
allº
the wordsº
of the law,º
the blessingsº
and cursings,º
according to allº
that is writtenºº
in the bookº
of the law.º |
 8:35
There was not a word of all that Mosheh{gr.Moses} charged Joshua{gr.Jesus}, which Joshua{gr.Jesus} read not in the ears of all the assembly of the children of Israel, the men, and the women, and the children, and the strangers that joined themselves to Israel. |
|
 8:35
There wasº
notº
a wordº
of allºº
thatº
Mosesº
commanded,ºº
whichº
Joshuaº
readºº
notº
beforeº
allº
the congregationº
of Israel,º
with the women,º
and the littleº
ones,º
and the strangersº
that were conversantºº
amongº
them. |
