 20:1 ¶
And after this came the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them [some] of the Minaeans, against Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} to battle. |
|
 20:1 ¶
It came to passº
afterº
thisºº
also, [that] the childrenº
of Moab,º
and the childrenº
of Ammon,º
and withº
them [other] besideº
the Ammonites,º
cameºº
againstº
Jehoshaphatº
to battle.º |
 20:2
And they came and told Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat}, saying, There is come against thee a great multitude from Syria, from beyond the sea; and, behold, they are in Asasan Tamar{gr.Thamar}, this is Engadi. |
|
 20:2
Then there cameºº
some that toldºº
Jehoshaphat,º
saying,ºº
There comethºº
a greatº
multitudeº
againstº
thee from beyondºº
the seaº
on this side Syria;ºº
and, behold,º
they [be] in Hazazontamar,º
whichº
[is] Engedi.º |
 20:3
And Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} was alarmed, and set his face to seek the Lord earnestly, and he proclaimed a fast in all Judah{gr.Juda}. |
|
 20:3
And Jehoshaphatº
feared,ºº
and setººº
himselfº
to seekºº
Yahweh,º
and proclaimedºº
a fastº
throughoutº
allº
Judah.º |
 20:4
And Judah{gr.Juda} gathered themselves together to seek after the Lord: even from all the cities of Judah{gr.Juda} they came to seek the Lord. |
|
 20:4
And Judahº
gathered themselves together,ºº
to askºº
[help] ofº
Yahweh:º
evenº
out of allºº
the citiesº
of Judahº
they cameºº
to seekººº
Yahweh.º |
 20:5 ¶
And Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} stood up in the assembly of Judah{gr.Juda} in Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, in front of the new court. |
|
 20:5 ¶
And Jehoshaphatº
stoodºº
in the congregationº
of Judahº
and Jerusalem,º
in the houseº
of Yahweh,º
beforeº
the newº
court,º |
 20:6
And he said, O Lord God of my fathers, art not thou God in heaven above, and art not thou Lord of all the kingdoms of the nations? and [is there] not in thy hand the might of dominion, and there is no one who can resist thee? |
|
 20:6
And said,ºº
O Yahwehº
Elohimº
of our fathers,º
[art] notº
thouº
Elohimº
in heaven?º
and rulestºº
[not] thouº
over allº
the kingdomsº
of the heathen?º
and in thine handº
[is there not] powerº
and might,º
so that noneº
is able to withstandººº
thee? |
 20:7
Art not thou the Lord that didst destroy the inhabitants of this land before the face of thy people Israel, and didst give it to thy beloved seed of Abraham for ever? |
|
 20:7
[Art] notº
thouº
our Elohim,º
[who] didst drive outººº
the inhabitantsºº
of thisº
landº
beforeºº
thy peopleº
Israel,º
and gavestºº
it to the seedº
of Abrahamº
thy friendºº
for ever?º |
 20:8
And they dwelt in it, and built in it a sanctuary to thy name, saying, |
|
 20:8
And they dweltºº
therein, and have builtºº
thee a sanctuaryº
therein for thy name,º
saying,ºº |
 20:9
If there should come upon us evils, sword, judgment, pestilence, famine, we will stand before this house, and before thee, (for thy name [is] upon this house,) and we will cry to thee because of the affliction, and thou shalt hear, and deliver. |
|
 20:9
If,º
[when] evilº
comethºº
uponº
us, [as] the sword,º
judgment,º
or pestilence,º
or famine,º
we standºº
beforeº
thisº
house,º
and in thy presence,º
(forº
thy nameº
[is] in thisº
house,)º
and cryºº
untoº
thee in our affliction,ºº
then thou wilt hearºº
and help.ºº |
 20:10
And now, behold, the children of Ammon, and Moab, and mount Seir, with regard to whom thou didst not permit Israel to pass through their border, when they had come out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, (for they turned away from them, and did not destroy them;)-- |
|
 20:10
And now,º
behold,º
the childrenº
of Ammonº
and Moabº
and mountº
Seir,º
whomº
thou wouldest notº
letºº
Israelº
invade,ºº
when they cameº
outºº
of the landºº
of Egypt,º
butº
they turnedºº
fromºº
them, and destroyedºº
them not;º |
 20:11
yet now, behold, they make attempts against us, to come forth to cast us out from our inheritance which thou gavest us. |
|
 20:11
Behold,º
[I say, how] theyº
rewardººº
us, to comeºº
to cast us outºº
of thy possession,ºº
whichº
thou hast given us to inherit.ºº |
 20:12
O Lord our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no strength to resist this great multitude that is come against us; and we know not what we shall do to them: but our eyes are toward thee. |
|
 20:12
O our Elohim,º
wilt thou notº
judgeºº
them? forº
we have noº
mightº
againstº
thisº
greatº
companyº
that comethºº
againstº
us; neitherº
knowºº
weº
whatº
to do:ºº
butº
our eyesº
[are] uponº
thee. |
 20:13
And all Judah{gr.Juda} was standing before the Lord, and their children, and their wives. |
|
 20:13
And allº
Judahº
stoodºº
beforeº
Yahweh,º
withº
their little ones,º
their wives,º
and their children.º |
 20:14 ¶
And Uzziel{gr.Oziel} the [son] of Zechariah{gr.Zacharias}, of the children of Benaiah{gr.Banaias}, of the sons of Eleiel, the sons of Mattaniah{gr.Matthanias} the Levite, of the sons of Asaph,-- upon him came the Spirit of the Lord in the assembly: |
|
 20:14 ¶
Then uponº
Jahazielº
the sonº
of Zechariah,º
the sonº
of Benaiah,º
the sonº
of Jeiel,º
the sonº
of Mattaniah,º
a Leviteº
ofº
the sonsº
of Asaph,º
cameº
the Spiritº
of Yahwehº
in the midstº
of the congregation;º |
 20:15
and he said, Hear ye, all Judah{gr.Juda}, and the dwellers in Jerusalem, and king Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat}: Thus saith the Lord to you, even you, Fear not, neither be alarmed, before all this great multitude; for the battle is not years, but God's. |
|
 20:15
And he said,ºº
Hearkenºº
ye, allº
Judah,º
and ye inhabitantsºº
of Jerusalem,º
and thou kingº
Jehoshaphat,º
Thusº
saithºº
Yahwehº
unto you, Be not afraidºººº
norº
dismayedºº
by reasonº
ofºº
thisº
greatº
multitude;º
forº
the battleº
[is] notº
yours, butº
Elohim's.º |
 20:16
To-morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the ascent of Assis, and ye shall find them at the extremity of the river of the wilderness of Jeriel. |
|
 20:16
To morrowº
go ye downºº
againstº
them: behold,º
they come upºº
by the cliffº
of Ziz;º
and ye shall findºº
them at the endº
of the brook,º
beforeº
the wildernessº
of Jeruel.º |
 20:17
It is not for you to fight: understand these things, and see the deliverance of the Lord with you, Judah{gr.Juda} and Jerusalem: fear not, neither be afraid to go forth to-morrow to meet them; and the Lord shall be with you. |
|
 20:17
Ye shall notº
[need] to fightºº
in thisº
[battle]: setºº
yourselves,º
standºº
ye [still], and seeººº
the salvationº
of Yahwehº
withº
you, O Judahº
and Jerusalem:º
fearºº
not,º
norº
be dismayed;ºº
to morrowº
go outºº
againstº
them: for Yahwehº
[will be] withº
you. |
 20:18
And Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} bowed with his face [to the ground] with all Judah{gr.Juda} and the dwellers in Jerusalem, [and] they fell before the Lord to worship the Lord. |
|
 20:18
And Jehoshaphatº
bowedºº
his headº
with [his] faceº
to the ground:º
and allº
Judahº
and the inhabitantsºº
of Jerusalemº
fellºº
beforeº
Yahweh,º
worshippingºº
Yahweh.º |
 20:19
And the Levites of the children of Kohath{gr.Caath}, and [they] of the sons of Korah{gr.Core}, rose up to praise the Lord God of Israel with a loud voice on high. |
|
 20:19
And the Levites,º
of the childrenº
ofº
the Kohathites,º
and ofº
the childrenº
of the Korhites,º
stood upºº
to praiseºº
Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israelº
with a loudº
voiceº
on high.º |
 20:20 ¶
And they rose early in the morning and went out to the wilderness of Tekoah{gr.Thecoe}: and as they went out, Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} stood and cried, and said, Hear me, Judah{gr.Juda}, and the dwellers in Jerusalem; put your trust in the Lord God, and your trust shall be honored; trust in his prophet, and ye shall prosper. |
|
 20:20 ¶
And they rose earlyºº
in the morning,º
and went forthºº
into the wildernessº
of Tekoa:º
and as they went forth,ºº
Jehoshaphatº
stoodºº
and said,ºº
Hearºº
me, O Judah,º
and ye inhabitantsºº
of Jerusalem;º
Believeºº
in Yahwehº
your Elohim,º
so shall ye be established;ºº
believeºº
his prophets,º
so shall ye prosper.ºº |
 20:21
And he took counsel with the people, and set appointed men to sing psalms and praises, to give thanks, and sing the holy songs of praise in going forth before the host: and they said, Give thanks to the Lord, for his mercy [endures] for ever. |
|
 20:21
And when he had consultedºº
withº
the people,º
he appointedºº
singersºº
unto Yahweh,º
and that should praiseºº
the beautyº
of holiness,º
as they went outºº
beforeº
the army,ºº
and to say,ºº
Praiseºº
Yahweh;º
forº
his mercyº
[endureth] for ever.º |
 20:22 ¶
And when they began the praise and thanksgiving, the Lord caused the children of Ammon to fight against Moab, and [the inhabitants of] mount Seir that came out against Judah{gr.Juda}; and they were routed. |
|
 20:22 ¶
And whenº
they beganºº
to singº
and to praise,º
Yahwehº
setºº
ambushmentsºº
againstº
the childrenº
of Ammon,º
Moab,º
and mountº
Seir,º
which were comeºº
against Judah;º
and they were smitten.ºº |
 20:23
Then the children of Ammon and Moab rose up against the dwellers in mount Seir, to destroy and consume them; and when they had made an end of [destroying] the inhabitants of Seir, they rose up against one another so that they were utterly destroyed. |
|
 20:23
For the childrenº
of Ammonº
and Moabº
stood upºº
againstº
the inhabitantsºº
of mountº
Seir,º
utterly to slayºº
and destroyºº
[them]: and when they had made an endºº
of the inhabitantsºº
of Seir,º
every oneº
helpedºº
to destroyº
another.º |
 20:24
And Judah{gr.Juda} came to the watch-tower of the wilderness, and looked, and saw the multitude, and, behold, [they were] all fallen dead upon the earth, not one escaped. |
|
 20:24
And when Judahº
cameºº
towardº
the watch towerººº
in the wilderness,º
they lookedºº
untoº
the multitude,º
and, behold,º
they [were] dead bodiesº
fallenºº
to the earth,º
and noneº
escaped.º |
 20:25
And Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} and his people went out to spoil them, and they found much cattle, and furniture, and spoils, and precious things: and they spoiled them, and they were three days gathering the spoil, for it was abundant. |
|
 20:25
And when Jehoshaphatº
and his peopleº
cameºº
to take awayººº
the spoilº
of them, they foundºº
among them in abundanceº
both richesº
with the dead bodies,º
and preciousºº
jewels,º
which they stripped offºº
for themselves, more thanº
they could carry away:º
and they wereº
threeº
daysº
in gatheringººº
of the spoil,º
itº
was so much.º |
 20:26 ¶
And it came to pass on the fourth day they were gathered to the Valley of Blessing; for there they blessed the Lord: therefore they called the name of the place the Valley of Blessing, until this day. |
|
 20:26 ¶
And on the fourthº
dayº
they assembledºº
themselvesº
in the valleyº
of Berachah;º
forº
thereº
they blessedººº
Yahweh:º
thereforeººº
the nameº
of the sameº
placeº
was called,ºº
The valleyº
of Berachah,º
untoº
this day.º |
 20:27
And all the men of Judah{gr.Juda} returned to Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} led them with great joy; for the Lord gave them joy over their enemies. |
|
 20:27
Then they returned,ºº
everyº
manº
of Judahº
and Jerusalem,º
and Jehoshaphatº
in the forefrontº
of them, to go againºº
toº
Jerusalemº
with joy;º
forº
Yahwehº
had made them to rejoiceºº
over their enemies.ººº |
 20:28
And they entered into Jerusalem with lutes and harps and trumpets, [going] into the house of the lord. |
|
 20:28
And they cameºº
to Jerusalemº
with psalteriesº
and harpsº
and trumpetsº
untoº
the houseº
of Yahweh.º |
 20:29
And there was a terror of the Lord upon all the kingdoms of the land, when they heard that the Lord fought against the enemies of Israel. |
|
 20:29
And the fearº
of Elohimº
wasº
onº
allº
the kingdomsº
of [those] countries,º
when they had heardºº
thatº
Yahwehº
foughtºº
againstº
the enemiesºº
of Israel.º |
 20:30
And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} was at peace; and his God gave him rest round about. |
|
 20:30
So the realmº
of Jehoshaphatº
was quiet:ºº
for his Elohimº
gave him restºº
round about.ºº |
 20:31 ¶
And Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} reigned over Judah{gr.Juda}, being thirty-five years [old] when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Azuba, daughter of Sali. |
|
 20:31 ¶
And Jehoshaphatº
reignedºº
overº
Judah:º
[he was] thirtyº
and fiveº
yearsº
oldº
when he began to reign,ºº
and he reignedºº
twentyº
and fiveº
yearsº
in Jerusalem.º
And his mother'sº
nameº
[was] Azubahº
the daughterº
of Shilhi.º |
 20:32
And he walked in the ways of his father Asa, and turned not aside from doing that which was right in the sight of the Lord. |
|
 20:32
And he walkedººº
in the wayº
of Asaº
his father,º
and departedºº
notº
fromº
it, doingºº
[that which was] rightº
in the sightº
of Yahweh.º |
 20:33
Nevertheless the high places yet remained; and as yet the people did not direct their heart to the Lord God of their fathers. |
|
 20:33
Howbeitº
the high placesº
were notº
taken away:ºº
for as yetº
the peopleº
had notº
preparedºº
their heartsº
unto the Elohimº
of their fathers.º |
 20:34
And the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat}, the first and the last, behold, they are written in the history of Jehu{gr.Jeu} [the son] of Hananiah{gr.Anani}, who wrote the book of the kings of Israel. |
|
 20:34
Now the restº
of the actsº
of Jehoshaphat,º
firstº
and last,º
behold,º
they [are] writtenºº
in the bookº
of Jehuº
the sonº
of Hanani,º
whoº
[is] mentionedºº
inº
the bookº
of the kingsº
of Israel.º |
 20:35 ¶
And afterwards Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} king of Judah{gr.Juda} entered into an alliance with Ahaziah{gr.Ochozias} king of Israel, (now this was an unrighteous man,) |
|
 20:35 ¶
And afterº
thisº
did Jehoshaphatº
kingº
of Judahº
joinºº
himselfº
withº
Ahaziahº
kingº
of Israel,º
whoº
didºº
very wickedly:ººº |
 20:36
by acting [with] and going to him, to build ships to go to Tharshish{gr.Tharsis}: and he built ships in Gasion Gaber. |
|
 20:36
And he joinedºº
himself withº
him to makeºº
shipsº
to goººº
to Tarshish:º
and they madeºº
the shipsº
in Eziongeber.º |
 20:37
And Eliezer thee [son] of Dodia of Marisa prophesied against Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat}, saying, Forasmuch as thou hast allied thyself with Ahaziah{gr.Ochozias}, the Lord has broken thy work, and thy vessels have been wrecked. And they could not go to Tharshish{gr.Tharsis}. |
|
 20:37
Then Eliezerº
the sonº
of Dodavahº
of Mareshahºº
prophesiedºº
againstº
Jehoshaphat,º
saying,ºº
Because thou hast joinedºº
thyselfº
withº
Ahaziah,º
Yahwehº
hath brokenººº
thy works.º
And the shipsº
were broken,ºº
that they were not ableººº
to goººº
toº
Tarshish.º |
