Josiah{gr.Josias} was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. |

And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of his father David, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left. |

[that which was] rightº
in the sightº
of Yahweh,º
and walkedººº
in the waysº
of Davidº
his father,º
and declinedºº
[neither] to the right hand,º
nor to the left.º |

34:3 ¶
And in the eighth year of his reign, and he [being] yet a youth, he began to seek the Lord God of his father David: and in the twelfth year of his reign he began to purge Judah{gr.Juda} and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the ornaments for the altars, and the molten images. |
|

For in the eighthº

of his reign,ºº

was yetº
young,º
he beganºº
to seekºº
after the Elohimº
of Davidº
his father:º
and in the twelfthºº
yearº
he beganºº
to purgeººº
Judahº
and Jerusalemº
fromº
the high places,º
and the groves,º
and the carved images,º
and the molten images.º |

And he pulled down the altars of Baalim that were before his face, and the high places that were above them; and he cut down the groves, and the graven images, and broke in pieces the molten images, and reduced them to powder, and cast [it] upon the surface of the tombs of those who [had] sacrificed to them. |
|

And they brake downººº
the altarsº
of Baalimº
in his presence;º
and the images,º
thatº
[were] on highº
aboveºº
them,º
he cut down;ºº
and the groves,º
and the carved images,º
and the molten images,º
he brake in pieces,ºº
and made dustºº
[of them], and strowedºº
[it] uponºº
the gravesº
of them that had sacrificedºº
unto them. |

And he burnt the bones of the priests upon the altars, and purged Judah{gr.Juda} and Jerusalem. |

their altars,º
and cleansedººº
Judahº
and Jerusalem.º |

34:6
And [he did so] in the cities of Manasseh{gr.Manasse}, and Ephraim, and Simeon{gr.Symeon}, and Naphtali{gr.Nephthali}, and the places round about them. |

And [so did he] in the citiesº
of Manasseh,º
and Ephraim,º
and Simeon,º
even untoº
Naphtali,º
with their mattocksº
round about.º |

34:7
And he pulled down the altars and the groves, and he cut the idols in small pieces, and cut off all the high places from all the land of Israel, and returned to Jerusalem. |
|

And when he had broken downººº
the altarsº
and the groves,º
and had beatenºº
the graven imagesº
into powder,ºº
and cut downºº
allº
the idolsº
throughout allº
the landº
of Israel,º
he returnedºº
to Jerusalem.º |

34:8 ¶
And in the eighteenth year of his reign, after having cleansed the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan{gr.Saphan} the son of Ezelias, and Maasa prefect of the city, and Juach son of Jehoahaz{gr.Joachaz} his recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God. |
|

the sonº
of Azaliah,º
and Maaseiahº
the governorº
of the city,º
and Joahº

And they came to Hilkiah{gr.Chelcias} the high priest, and gave the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites who kept the gate collected of the hand of Manasseh{gr.Manasse} and Ephraim, and of the princes, and of every one that was left in Israel, and of the children of Judah{gr.Juda} and Benjamin, and of the dwellers in Jerusalem. |

they deliveredººº
the moneyº
that was broughtºº

the houseº
of Elohim,º
whichº
the Levitesº
that keptºº
the doorsº
had gatheredºº
of the handºº

and Ephraim,º

the remnantº
of Israel,º
and of allºº
Judahº
and Benjamin;º
and they returnedººººº
to Jerusalem.º |

And they gave it into the hand of the workmen, who were appointed in the house of the Lord, and they gave it to the workmen who wrought in the house of the Lord, to repair and strengthen the house. |

[it] inº
the handº
of the workmenººº
that had the oversightºº
of the houseº
of Yahweh,º
and they gaveºº
it to the workmenººº
thatº
wroughtºº
in the houseº
of Yahweh,º
to repairºº
and amendºº
the house:º |

They gave [it] also to the carpenters and builders, to buy squared stones, and timber for beams to cover the houses which the kings of Judah{gr.Juda} had destroyed. |

Even to the artificersº
and buildersºº
gaveºº
they [it], to buyºº
hewnº
stone,º
and timberº
for couplings,º
and to floorººº
the housesº
whichº
the kingsº
of Judahº
had destroyed.ºº |

And the men [were] faithfully [engaged] in the works: and over them were superintendents, Jahath{gr.Jeth} and Obadiah{gr.Abdias}, Levites of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah{gr.Zacharias} and Meshullam{gr.Mosollam}, of the sons of Kohath{gr.Caath}, [appointed] to oversee; and every Levite, and every one that understood [how] to play on musical instruments. |

them [were] Jahathº
and Obadiah,º
the Levites,º
ofº
the sonsº
of Merari;º
and Zechariahº
and Meshullam,º
ofº

to set [it] forward;ºº
and [other of] the Levites,º
allº
that could skillºº
of instrumentsº
of musick.º |

And [overseers were] over the burden-bearers, and over all the workmen in the respective works; and of the Levites [were appointed] scribes, and judges, and porters. |

Also [they were] overº
the bearers of burdens,º
and [were] overseersºº
of allº
that wroughtºº
the workº
in any manner of service:º
and ofº
the Levitesº
[there were] scribes,ºº
and officers,ºº
and porters.º |

34:14 ¶
And when they brought forth the money that had been brought into the house of the Lord, Hilkiah{gr.Chelcias} the priest found a book of the law of the Lord [given] by the hand of Mosheh{gr.Moses}. |
|

And when they brought outººº

that was brought intoºº
the houseº
of Yahweh,º
Hilkiahº
the priestº
foundººº
a bookº
of the lawº
of Yahwehº
[given] byº

And Hilkiah{gr.Chelcias} answered and said to Shaphan{gr.Saphan} the scribe, I have found a book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah{gr.Chelcias} gave the book to Shaphan{gr.Saphan}. |

And Shaphan{gr.Saphan} brought in the book to the king, and moreover gave an account to the king, [saying, This is] all the money given into the hand of thy servants that work. |

again,º

Allº
thatº
was committedºº

thy servants,ºº

And they have collected the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and given it into the hand of the overseers, and into the hand of them that do the work. |

And they have gathered togetherººº

of Yahweh,º

of the overseers,ºº
and toº
the handº
of the workmen.ººº |

And Shaphan{gr.Saphan} the scribe brought word to the king, saying, Hilkiah{gr.Chelcias} the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan{gr.Saphan} read it before the king. |

me a book.º

And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the law, that he rent his garments. |

the wordsº
of the law,º
that he rentººº
his clothes.º |

And the king commanded Hilkiah{gr.Chelcias}, and Ahikam{gr.Achicam} the son of Shaphan{gr.Saphan}, and Abdon{gr.Abdom} the son of Micah{gr.Michaias}, and Shaphan{gr.Saphan} the scribe, and Asia the servant of the king, saying, |

Go, enquire of the Lord for me, and for every one that is left in Israel and Judah{gr.Juda}, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord [which] has been kindled amongst us, because our fathers have not hearkened to the words of the Lord, to do according to all the things written in this book. |

And Hilkiah{gr.Chelcias} went, and [the others] whom the king told, to Olda the prophetess, the wife of Shallum{gr.Sellem} son of Tekoah{gr.Thecoe}, son of Aras, who kept the commandments; and she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second [quarter]: and they spoke to her accordingly. |

the prophetess,º
the wifeº
of Shallumº

and they spakeºº

her to thatº
[effect]. |

And she said to them, Thus has the Lord God of Israel said, Tell the man who sent you to me, |

And she answeredºº
them, Thusº
saithºº
Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israel,º
Tellºº
ye the manº
thatº
sentºº
you toº
me, |

Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I bring evil upon this place, [even] all the words that are written in the book that was read before the king of Judah{gr.Juda}: |

Yahweh,º
Behold,º
I will bringºº
evilº
uponº
thisº
place,º
and uponº
the inhabitantsºº
thereof, [even]º
allº
the cursesº
that are writtenºº
inº
the bookº
whichº
they have readºº
beforeº
the kingº
of Judah:º |

because they have forsaken me, and burnt incense to strange gods, that they might provoke me by all the works of their hands; and my wrath is kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched. |

me, and have burned incenseºººº
unto otherº
elohim,º
thatº
they might provoke me to angerºº
with allº
the worksº
of their hands;º
therefore my wrathº
shall be poured outºº
upon thisº
place,º
and shall notº

And concerning the king of Judah{gr.Juda}, who sent you to seek the Lord,-- thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, [As for] the words which thou has heard, |

forasmuch as thy heart was ashamed, and thou was humbled before me when thou heardest my words against this place, and against the inhabitants of it, and thou wast humbled before me, and didst rend thy garments, and didst weep before me; I also have heard, saith the Lord. |

againstº
thisº
place,º

Behold, I [will] gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, and thine eyes shall not look upon all the evils which I am bringing upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of it. And they brought back word to the king. |

And the king sent and gathered the elders of Judah{gr.Juda} and Jerusalem. |

And the king went up to the house of the Lord, [he] and all Judah{gr.Juda}, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that were found in the house of the Lord. |

And the king stood at a pillar, and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk before the Lord, to keep his commandments and testimonies, and his ordinances, with all [his] heart and with all [his] soul, so as to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book. |

And he caused all that were found in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand; and the inhabitants of Jerusalem made a covenant in the house of the Lord God of their fathers. |

And Josiah{gr.Josias} removed all the abominations out of the whole land which belonged to the children of Israel, and caused all that were found in Jerusalem and in Israel, to serve the Lord their God all his days: he departed not from following the Lord God of his fathers. |
