 1:1 ¶ And Moab repelled against Israel after the death of Ahab{gr.Achaab}.

 1:1 ¶ Then Moabº rebelledºº against Israelº afterº the deathº of Ahab.º

 1:2 Ahaziah{gr.Ochozias} fell through the lattice that was in his upper chamber in Samaria and was sick; and he sent messengers, and said to them, Go and enquire of Baal fly, the god of Ekron{gr.Accaron}, whether I shall recover of this my sickness. And they went to enquire of him.

 1:2 And Ahaziahº fell downºº throughº a latticeº in his upper chamberº thatº [was] in Samaria,º and was sick:ºº and he sentºº messengers,º and saidºº untoº them, Go,ººº enquireºº of Baalzebubº the elohimº of Ekronº whetherº I shall recoverºº of this disease.ººº

 1:3 And an angel of the Lord called Elijah{gr.Eliu} the Tishbite{gr.Thesbite}, saying, Arise, and go to meet the messengers of Ahaziah{gr.Ochozias} king of Samaria, and thou shalt say to them, [Is it] because there is no God in Israel, [that] ye go to enquire of Baal fly, the God of Ekron{gr.Accaron}? but [it shall] not [be] so.

 1:3 But the angelº of Yahwehº saidºº toº Elijahº the Tishbite,º Arise,ºº go upºº to meetºº the messengersº of the kingº of Samaria,º and sayºº untoº them, [Is it] not becauseºº [there is] notº an Elohimº in Israel,º [that] yeº goºº to enquireºº of Baalzebubº the elohimº of Ekron?º

 1:4 For thus saith the Lord, The bed on which thou art gone up, thou shalt not come down from it, for thou shalt surely die. And Elijah{gr.Eliu} went, and said [so] to them.

 1:4 Now thereforeº thusº saithºº Yahweh,º Thou shalt notº come downºº fromº that bedº on whichºº thou art gone up,ºº butº shalt surelyºº die.ºº And Elijahº departed.ººº

 1:5 ¶ And the messengers returned to him, and he said to them, Why have ye returned?

 1:5 ¶ And when the messengersº turned backºº untoº him, he saidºº untoº them, Whyº are ye nowº turned back?ºº

 1:6 And they said to him, A man came up to meet us, and said to us, Go, return to the king that sent you, and say to him, Thus saith the Lord, [Is it] because there is no God in Israel, [that] thou goest to enquire of Baal fly, the God of Ekron{gr.Accaron}? [it shall] not [be] so: the bed on which thou art gone up, thou shalt not come down from it, for thou shalt surely die.

 1:6 And they saidºº untoº him, There cameºº a manº upºº to meetºº us, and saidºº untoº us, Go,ººº turn againºº untoº the kingº thatº sentºº you, and sayºº untoº him, Thusº saithºº Yahweh,º [Is it] not becauseºº [there is] notº an Elohimº in Israel,º [that] thouº sendestºº to enquireºº of Baalzebubº the elohimº of Ekron?º thereforeº thou shalt notº come downºº fromº that bedº on whichºº thou art gone up,ºº butº shalt surelyºº die.ºº

 1:7 So they returned and reported to the king as Elijah{gr.Eliu} said: and he said to them, What [was] the manner of the man who went up to mid you, and spoke to you these words?

 1:7 And he saidºº untoº them, Whatº mannerº of manº [was he] whichº came upºº to meetºº you, and toldººº youº theseº words?º

 1:8 And they said to him, [He was] a hairy man, and girt with a leathern girdle about his loins. And he said, This is Elijah{gr.Eliu} the Tishbite{gr.Thesbite}.

 1:8 And they answeredººº him, [He was] an hairyº man,ººº and girtºº with a girdleº of leatherº about his loins.º And he said,ºº Itº [is] Elijahº the Tishbite.º

 1:9 And he sent to him a captain of fifty and his fifty; and he went up to him: and, behold, Elijah{gr.Eliu} sat on the top of a mountain. And the captain of fifty spoke to him, and said, O man of God, the king has called thee, come down.

 1:9 Then the kingº sentºº untoº him a captainº of fiftyº with his fifty.º And he went upºº toº him: and, behold,º he satºº onº the topº of an hill.º And he spakeºº untoº him, Thou manº of Elohim,º the kingº hath said,ºº Come down.ºº

 1:10 And Elijah{gr.Eliu} answered and said to the captain of fifty, And if I [am] a man of God, fire shall come down out of heaven, and devour thee and thy fifty. And fire came down out of heaven, and devoured him and his fifty.

 1:10 And Elijahº answeredºº and saidºº toº the captainº of fifty,º Ifº Iº [be] a manº of Elohim,º then let fireº come downºº fromº heaven,º and consumeºº thee and thy fifty.º And there came downºº fireº fromº heaven,º and consumedºº him and his fifty.º

 1:11 And the king sent a second time to him another captain of fifty, and his fifty. And the captain of fifty spoke to him, and said, O man of God, thus says the king, Come down quickly.

 1:11 Againºº also he sentºº untoº him anotherº captainº of fiftyº with his fifty.º And he answeredºº and saidºº untoº him, O manº of Elohim,º thusº hath the kingº said,ºº Come downºº quickly.º

 1:12 And Elijah{gr.Eliu} answered and spoke to him, and said, If I [am] a man of God, fire shall come down out of heaven, and devour thee and thy fifty. And fire came down out of heaven, and devoured him and his fifty.

 1:12 And Elijahº answeredºº and saidºº untoº them, Ifº Iº [be] a manº of Elohim,º let fireº come downºº fromº heaven,º and consumeºº thee and thy fifty.º And the fireº of Elohimº came downºº fromº heaven,º and consumedºº him and his fifty.º

 1:13 ¶ And the king sent yet again a captain and his fifty. And the third captain of fifty came, and knelt on his knees before Elijah{gr.Eliu}, and entreated him, and spoke to him and said, O man of God, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thine eyes.

 1:13 ¶ And he sentºº againºº a captainº of the thirdº fiftyº with his fifty.º And the thirdº captainº of fiftyº went up,ºº and cameºº and fellºº onº his kneesº beforeº Elijah,º and besoughtººº him, and saidºº untoº him, O manº of Elohim,º I pray thee,º let my life,º and the lifeº of theseº fiftyº thy servants,º be preciousºº in thy sight.º

 1:14 Behold, fire came down from heaven, and devoured the two first captains of fifty: and now, I pray, let my life be precious in thine eyes.

 1:14 Behold,º there cameºº fireº downººº fromº heaven,º and burnt upººº the twoº captainsº of the formerº fiftiesº with their fifties:º therefore let my lifeº nowº be preciousºº in thy sight.º

 1:15 And the angel of the Lord spoke to Elijah{gr.Eliu}, and said, Go down with him, be not afraid of them. And Elijah{gr.Eliu} rose up, and went down with him to the king.

 1:15 And the angelº of Yahwehº saidºº untoº Elijah,º Go downºº withº him: be not afraidººº ofºº him.º And he arose,ºº and went downºº withº him untoº the king.º

 1:16 And Elijah{gr.Eliu} spoke to him, and said, Thus saith the Lord, Why hast thou sent messengers to enquire of Baal fly, the god of Ekron{gr.Accaron}? [it shall] not [be] so: the bed on which thou art gone up, thou shalt not come down from it, for thou shalt surely die.

 1:16 And he saidºº untoº him, Thusº saithºº Yahweh,º Forasmuch asºº thou hast sentºº messengersº to enquireºº of Baalzebubº the elohimº of Ekron,º [is it] not becauseºº [there is] noº Elohimº in Israelº to enquireºº of his word?º thereforeº thou shalt notº come downºº offº that bedº on whichºº thou art gone up,ºº butº shalt surelyºº die.ºº

 1:17 ¶ So he died according to the word of the Lord which Elijah{gr.Eliu} has spoken.

 1:17 ¶ So he diedºº according to the wordº of Yahwehº whichº Elijahº had spoken.ºº And Jehoramº reignedºº in his steadº in the secondº yearº of Jehoramº the sonº of Jehoshaphatº kingº of Judah;º becauseº he hadº noº son.º

 1:18 And the rest of the acts of Ahaziah{gr.Ochozias} which he did, behold, [are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? and Joram son of Ahab{gr.Achaab} reigns over Israel in Samaria twelve years [beginning] in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} king of Judah{gr.Juda}: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, only not as his brethren, nor as his mother: and he removed the pillars of Baal which his father made, and broke them in pieces: only he was joined to the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who led Israel to sin; he departed not from them. And the Lord was very angry with the house of Ahab{gr.Achaab}.

 1:18 Now the restº of the actsº of Ahaziahº whichº he did,ºº [are] theyº notº writtenºº inº the bookº of the chroniclesºº of the kingsº of Israel?º
