 3:1 ¶
And Joram the son of Ahab{gr.Achaab} began to reign in Israel in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, and he reigned twelve years. |
|
 3:1 ¶
Now Jehoramº
the sonº
of Ahabº
began to reignºº
overº
Israelº
in Samariaº
the eighteenthºº
yearº
of Jehoshaphatº
kingº
of Judah,º
and reignedºº
twelveºº
years.º |
 3:2
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, only not as his father, nor as his mother: and he removed the pillars of Baal which his father had made. |
|
 3:2
And he wroughtºº
evilº
in the sightº
of Yahweh;º
butº
notº
like his father,º
and like his mother:º
for he put awayººº
the imageº
of Baalº
thatº
his fatherº
had made.ºº |
 3:3
Only he adhered to the sin of Jeroboam the son of Nebat{gr.Nabat}, who made Israel to sin; he departed not from it. |
|
 3:3
Neverthelessº
he cleavedºº
unto the sinsº
of Jeroboamº
the sonº
of Nebat,º
whichº
madeº
Israelº
to sin;ºº
he departedºº
notº
therefrom.º |
 3:4 ¶
And Mosa king of Moab was a sheep-master, and he rendered to the king of Israel in the beginning [of the year], a hundred thousand lambs, and a hundred thousand rams, with the wool. |
|
 3:4 ¶
And Meshaº
kingº
of Moabº
wasº
a sheepmaster,º
and renderedºº
unto the kingº
of Israelº
an hundredº
thousandº
lambs,º
and an hundredº
thousandº
rams,º
with the wool.º |
 3:5
And it came to pass, after the death of Ahab{gr.Achaab}, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. |
|
 3:5
But it came to pass,º
when Ahabº
was dead,º
that the kingº
of Moabº
rebelledºº
against the kingº
of Israel.º |
 3:6 ¶
And king Joram went forth in that day out of Samaria, and numbered Israel. |
|
 3:6 ¶
And kingº
Jehoramº
went outºº
of Samariaºº
the sameº
time,º
and numberedººº
allº
Israel.º |
 3:7
And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, saying, The king of Moab has rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to war? And he said, I will go up: thou art as I, I am as thou; as my people, so [is] thy people, as my horses, so [are] thy horses. |
|
 3:7
And he wentººº
and sentºº
toº
Jehoshaphatº
the kingº
of Judah,º
saying,ºº
The kingº
of Moabº
hath rebelledºº
against me: wilt thou goººº
withº
me againstº
Moabº
to battle?º
And he said,ºº
I will go up:ºº
I [am] as thou [art], my peopleº
as thy people,º
[and] my horsesº
as thy horses.º |
 3:8
And he said, What way shall I go up? and he said, The way of the wilderness of Edom. |
|
 3:8
And he said,ºº
Whichºº
wayº
shall we go up?ºº
And he answered,ºº
The wayº
through the wildernessº
of Edom.º |
 3:9
And the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah{gr.Juda}, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey; and there was no water for the army, and for the cattle that went with them. |
|
 3:9
So the kingº
of Israelº
went,ººº
and the kingº
of Judah,º
and the kingº
of Edom:º
and they fetched a compassºº
of sevenº
days'º
journey:º
and there wasº
noº
waterº
for the host,º
and for the cattleº
thatº
followedº
them. |
 3:10
And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the Lord should have called the three kings on their way, to give them into the hand of Moab. |
|
 3:10
And the kingº
of Israelº
said,ºº
Alas!º
thatº
Yahwehº
hath calledºº
theseº
threeº
kingsº
together,ºº
to deliverºº
them into the handº
of Moab!º |
 3:11
And Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the servants of the king of Israel answered and said, [There is] here Elisha{gr.Elisaie} son of Shaphat{gr.Saphat}, who poured water on the hands of Elijah{gr.Eliu}. |
|
 3:11
But Jehoshaphatº
said,ºº
[Is there] notº
hereº
a prophetº
of Yahweh,º
that we may enquireºº
ofº
Yahwehº
byºº
him? And oneº
of the kingº
of Israel'sº
servantsººº
answeredºº
and said,ºº
Hereº
[is] Elishaº
the sonº
of Shaphat,º
whichº
pouredºº
waterº
onº
the handsº
of Elijah.º |
 3:12
And Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} said, He has the word of the Lord. And the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} king of Judah{gr.Juda}, and the king of Edom, went down to him. |
|
 3:12
And Jehoshaphatº
said,ºº
The wordº
of Yahwehº
isº
withº
him. So the kingº
of Israelº
and Jehoshaphatº
and the kingº
of Edomº
went downºº
toº
him. |
 3:13
And Elisha{gr.Elisaie} said to the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? go to the prophets of thy father, and the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said to him, Has the Lord called the three kings to deliver them into the hands of Moab? |
|
 3:13
And Elishaº
saidºº
untoº
the kingº
of Israel,º
Whatº
have I to do with thee? getººº
thee toº
the prophetsº
of thy father,º
and toº
the prophetsº
of thy mother.º
And the kingº
of Israelº
saidºº
unto him, Nay:º
forº
Yahwehº
hath calledºº
theseº
threeº
kingsº
together,ºº
to deliverºº
them into the handº
of Moab.º |
 3:14
And Elisha{gr.Elisaie} said, [As] the Lord of hosts before whom I stand lives, unless I regarded the presence of Jehoshaphat{gr.Josaphat} the king of Judah{gr.Juda}, I would not have looked on thee, nor seen thee. |
|
 3:14
And Elishaº
said,ºº
[As] Yahwehº
Sabaothº
liveth,º
beforeº
whomº
I stand,ºº
surely,º
were it notº
thatº
Iº
regardºº
the presenceº
of Jehoshaphatº
the kingº
of Judah,º
I would not lookºº
towardº
thee, norº
seeºº
thee. |
 3:15
And now fetch me a harper. And it came to pass, as the harper harped, that the hand of the Lord came upon him. |
|
 3:15
But nowº
bringºº
me a minstrel.ºº
And it came to pass,º
when the minstrelºº
played,ºº
that the handº
of Yahwehº
cameº
uponº
him. |
 3:16
And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of trenches. |
|
 3:16
And he said,ºº
Thusº
saithºº
Yahweh,º
Makeºº
thisº
valleyº
full of ditches.º |
 3:17
For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain, yet this valley shall be filled with water, and ye, and your flocks, and your cattle shall drink. |
|
 3:17
Forº
thusº
saithºº
Yahweh,º
Ye shall notº
seeºº
wind,º
neitherº
shall ye seeºº
rain;º
yet thatº
valleyº
shall be filledºº
with water,º
that ye may drink,ºº
both ye,º
and your cattle,º
and your beasts.º |
 3:18
And this [is] a light [thing] in the eyes of the Lord: I will also deliver Moab into your hand. |
|
 3:18
And thisº
is [but] a light thingºº
in the sightº
of Yahweh:º
he will deliverººº
the Moabitesº
also into your hand.º |
 3:19
And ye shall smite every strong city, and ye shall cut down every good tree, and ye shall stop all wells of water, and spoil every good piece [of land] with stones. |
|
 3:19
And ye shall smiteºº
everyº
fencedº
city,º
and everyº
choiceº
city,º
and shall fellºº
everyº
goodº
tree,º
and stopºº
allº
wellsº
of water,º
and marºº
everyº
goodº
pieceº
of landº
with stones.º |
 3:20
And it came to pass in the morning, when the sacrifice was offered, that, behold! waters came from the way of Edom, and the land was filled with water. |
|
 3:20
And it came to passº
in the morning,º
when the meat offeringº
was offered,ºº
that, behold,º
there cameºº
waterº
by the wayºº
of Edom,º
and the countryº
was filledºº
withº
water.º |
 3:21 ¶
And all Moab heard that the three kings were come up to fight against them; and they cried out on every [side, even] all that were girt with a girdle, and they said, Ho! and stood upon the border. |
|
 3:21 ¶
And when allº
the Moabitesº
heardºº
thatº
the kingsº
were come upºº
to fightºº
against them, they gatheredºº
allººº
that were able to putºº
onº
armour,º
and upward,º
and stoodºº
inº
the border.º |
 3:22
And they rose early in the morning, and the sun rose upon the waters, and Moab saw the waters on the opposite side red as blood. |
|
 3:22
And they rose up earlyºº
in the morning,º
and the sunº
shoneºº
uponº
the water,º
and the Moabitesº
sawººº
the waterº
on the other sideºº
[as] redº
as blood:º |
 3:23
And they said, This [is] the blood of the sword; and the kings have fought, and each man has smitten his neighbour; now then to the spoils, Moab. |
|
 3:23
And they said,ºº
Thisº
[is] blood:º
the kingsº
are surelyºº
slain,ºº
and they have smittenººº
oneº
another:º
nowº
therefore, Moab,º
to the spoil.º |
 3:24
And they entered into the camp of Israel; and Israel arose and smote Moab, and they fled from before them; and they went on and smote Moab as they went. |
|
 3:24
And when they cameºº
toº
the campº
of Israel,º
the Israelitesº
rose upºº
and smoteººº
the Moabites,º
so that they fledºº
beforeºº
them: but they wentº
forwardºº
smitingººº
the Moabites,º
even in [their] country. |
 3:25
And they razed the cities, and cast every man his stone on every good piece [of land] and filled it; and they stopped every well, and cut down every good tree, until they left [only] the stones of the wall cast down; and the slingers compassed [the land], and smote it. |
|
 3:25
And they beat downºº
the cities,º
and on everyº
goodº
pieceº
of land castºº
every manº
his stone,º
and filledºº
it; and they stoppedºº
allº
the wellsº
of water,º
and felledºº
allº
the goodº
trees:º
onlyº
in Kirharasethº
leftºº
they the stonesº
thereof; howbeit the slingersº
went aboutºº
[it], and smoteºº
it. |
 3:26 ¶
And the king of Moab saw that the battle prevailed against him; and he took with him seven hundred men that drew sword, to cut through to the king of Edom: and they could not. |
|
 3:26 ¶
And when the kingº
of Moabº
sawºº
thatº
the battleº
was too soreºº
forº
him, he tookºº
withº
him sevenº
hundredº
menº
that drewºº
swords,º
to break throughºº
[even] untoº
the kingº
of Edom:º
but they couldºº
not.º |
 3:27
And he took his eldest son whom he had designed to reign in his stead, and offered him up for a whole-burnt-offering on the walls. And there was a great indignation against Israel; and they departed from him, and returned to their land. |
|
 3:27
Then he tookººº
his eldestº
sonº
thatº
should have reignedºº
in his stead,º
and offeredºº
him [for] a burnt offeringº
uponº
the wall.º
And there wasº
greatº
indignationº
againstº
Israel:º
and they departedºº
fromºº
him, and returnedºº
to [their own] land.º |
